Chapter 24: The EMP Protocol
The glass containment jar didn't just shatter; it detonated.
A localized shockwave of pure, condensed kinetic energy ripped outward from the workbench as the purple crystal forcefully aligned its frequency with the Hive-Mind’s telepathic targeting lock.
For Lyla, the shockwave was a stiff breeze. For Elara and Kira, it was a heavy push.
But for Ren, currently inhabiting an eight-year-old body that weighed less than sixty pounds, it was a cannon blast.
Ren was thrown completely off his feet, hurtling backward through the air toward the unyielding obsidian wall of the laboratory.
"Master Ren!" Lyla roared.
The massive cow-girl didn't even need to step forward. She simply reached out with one massive hand and plucked Ren out of the air by the collar of his white coat, arresting his momentum instantly and setting him down gently behind her broad back.
"Thank you, Lyla," Ren gasped, the wind knocked out of his small lungs. He quickly peered around her waist.
On the workbench, the purple crystal was no longer a dormant rock. It was levitating three feet in the air, spinning violently. A blinding, searing beam of violet light shot straight up, burning a tiny, perfectly round hole straight through the cavern ceiling, ascending through the bedrock toward the surface.
The air in the laboratory grew suffocatingly heavy. The atmospheric pressure spiked, popping their ears.
"Master Ren, what is that light?!" Elara shouted over the sudden, deafening hum echoing in the room.
"It’s a resonant conduit!" Ren yelled, his mind calculating the sheer volume of ambient mana gathering miles above the estate. "A homing beacon! The Hive-Mind is using the crystal to paint our exact coordinates. It’s dropping a high-altitude magical artillery strike directly onto our heads!"
Elara’s Statistical Probability Mapping flared, her eyes glowing gold. "Incoming kinetic and biological payload. Impact in fourteen seconds. Deploying Aegis!"
She slammed her hands onto the floor to summon her thickest, most impenetrable earth barriers.
"No, Elara, stop!" Ren commanded, grabbing her wrist with his tiny hands. "Do not use mana! If you build a standard mana shield, the barrier will act as a conductive lightning rod. The telepathic payload will instantly bypass the stone, latch onto your mana signature, and fry your brain. It's how they kill standard mages!"
Elara froze, realizing how close she had come to suffering catastrophic Mana Burn.
"Then how do we stop it?!" Kira cried out. The static electricity in her silver hair was arcing wildly, violently drawn toward the spinning purple crystal. "It's pulling me!"
"We don't block it. We blind it!" Ren shouted, his Archmage intellect operating at blinding speeds. "We execute an EMP Protocol! Elara, I need a Faraday cage! Build a dome of pure, non-magical iron and lead ore around the crystal! Do not reinforce it with mana; just move the raw earth!"
Elara didn't hesitate. She plunged her hands into the obsidian floor, reaching deep into the bedrock. With a grunt of immense effort, she ripped a thick dome of raw, unrefined metal ores out of the ground, enclosing the spinning crystal and the workbench.

Even in the face of imminent vaporization, Elara’s new quirk took over. As the dome formed, her fingers twitched, instinctively smoothing the edges of the metal until the hemisphere was geometrically flawless, the angles perfectly aligned to the exact millimeter.
"Symmetry achieved," Elara breathed, her mapping satisfied.
"Kira!" Ren shouted, tossing the copper wire coil he had built earlier onto the floor directly next to the metal dome. "Grab both ends of the wire!"
Kira blurred, appearing next to the dome and grabbing the copper leads.
"An Electromagnetic Pulse requires a massive, instantaneous dump of electrical energy," Ren explained rapidly, watching the ceiling begin to crack as the orbital strike descended closer to the surface. "Your nervous system is currently a superconductor holding an immense static charge. I need you to dump every single volt of your internal electricity into that coil. Now!"
Kira squeezed her eyes shut. She gritted her fangs. She didn't hold back. She forcefully expelled the entirety of her Mythic-tier electromagnetic field into the copper wire in a single, terrifying microsecond.
ZZZZZT-BOOM.
There was no fire. There was no concussive shockwave.
There was just a blinding flash of invisible, high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. The EMP wave washed over the laboratory, entirely contained and amplified by Elara's symmetrical metal dome.
The EMP slammed into the levitating purple crystal, violently scrambling its binary telemetry. The magnetic polarity of the crystal was ripped apart at the molecular level.
Inside the dome, the crystal instantly vaporized into inert gray dust.
The violet beam of light vanished.
Above them, the oppressive, suffocating pressure in the air abruptly dissipated. The Hive-Mind’s targeting lock had been severed just milliseconds before the payload struck. Without a beacon to guide it, the massive accumulation of corrupted mana in the sky lost its cohesive geometry and harmlessly scattered into the upper atmosphere like a dispersed thundercloud.
Silence descended on the laboratory, save for the gentle hum of the ventilation shafts.
Kira collapsed onto the floor, panting heavily. Her silver fur, which was usually impossibly fluffy and full of static, was completely flat and limp. Her ears drooped lazily.
"I feel... so squishy," Kira mumbled, her limbs feeling like wet noodles now that her internal battery was fully drained.
"You did perfectly, Kira," Ren said, rushing over to check her pulse. Her heart rate was stable; she was just electrically exhausted.
Lyla walked over, using one massive finger to poke the perfect metal dome Elara had built. "So... we beat it? The big voice in the sky missed?"
Elara stood up, wiping a speck of dust from her apron, adjusting her collar to sit perfectly straight. "The statistical probability of a blind strike hitting the manor without a telemetry beacon is less than zero-point-one percent. We are safe."
Ren didn't celebrate. He stood up, walking past them to the far wall of the laboratory.
He had installed a crude, mana-powered seismograph the day before, using a suspended pendulum to track vibrations in the bedrock across the Barony's borders.
The needle wasn't still. It was violently scratching ink back and forth across the parchment, recording a massive, rolling tremor originating fifty miles to the west.
"Master Ren?" Elara asked, noticing the cold, absolute dread settling over his small frame. "The strike dissipated. I felt the atmospheric pressure drop."
"It dissipated in the upper atmosphere, Elara," Ren whispered, his eyes locked on the seismograph. He grabbed a map of the region, overlaying the seismic coordinates.
He looked at the ancient lore book still sitting on his desk, the page open to the Breath of the Gods bioweapon.
"Energy cannot be destroyed; it can only change form," Ren recited quietly. "The Hive-Mind didn't abort the strike when it lost our lock. It just converted the localized kinetic payload into a wide-area biological dispersal."
Ren traced his small finger along the map, drawing a massive circle over the inner edge of the Dark Woods.
"It detonated the payload over the migration routes," Ren said, looking back at his Vanguard.
The quiet confidence of the Archmage was replaced by a grim, terrifying reality.
"It just blanketed a hundred thousand migrating beasts in accelerated, weaponized spores," Ren whispered. He tapped the glass of the seismograph as the needle began to record thousands of new, frantic, heavy footfalls. "The six-year timeline..."
Ren looked up, his dark eyes filled with the cold light of war.
"...just became six months."
