Chapter 17: The Viscosity of Mud and Blood
The Eastern River was usually a roaring lifeline for the Valerius Barony. It watered the village crops, powered the local grain mill, and, most importantly to Ren, provided the water pressure for the manor’s secret underground hot spring.
Today, it was nothing but a trench of cracking, foul-smelling mud.
Ren walked along the elevated riverbank, his pristine white coat fluttering in the autumn wind. The air was thick with the stench of dying fish and stagnant silt.
Behind him walked his newly evolved Vanguard. They moved differently today.
Kira, the five-year-old fox-kin, darted through the dense underbrush like a ghost. Before her Mythic evolution, she was fast. Now, with her central nervous system wrapped in a superconducting electromagnetic field, her movements were terrifyingly instant. She didn't accelerate; she simply arrived at her destination.
Lyla carried her three-hundred-pound hammer resting casually on her shoulder. Her new Absolute Mass Output trait meant she no longer fought her own weight. She walked over the soft, muddy embankment without leaving a footprint more than a fraction of an inch deep, perfectly distributing her mass with subconscious precision.
And Elara walked directly beside Ren, her brown eyes scanning the treeline. Her Statistical Probability Mapping was actively processing the environment.
"The mud is deepest near the bend, Ren," Elara reported, her voice calm and analytical, a stark contrast to the panicked maid she used to be. "Based on the moisture gradient and the localized tracks, there is a ninety-four percent probability the blockage is located exactly half a mile upstream."
"Excellent processing, Elara," Ren praised, not breaking his stride. "Any signs of the Baron's guards?"
"None. They likely took one look at the tracks and retreated to the village to fortify," she replied, a hint of professional disdain in her voice. "The footprints in the mud belong to hexapods. Six-legged reptiles. Heavy claws."
Ren nodded. "Silt-Drakes. Tier-3 magical beasts. They secrete a massive amount of alkaline mucus that binds with water and dirt, turning flowing rivers into thick, stagnant mud pits to lay their eggs. They are highly territorial."
"Tier-3?" Lyla gulped slightly, her cow-ears flattening. "The Baron's Knights usually hunt Tier-3s in groups of twenty."
Ren stopped walking. He turned to look at the massive girl, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Lyla, a Royal Knight swings a steel sword with a baseline kinetic force of roughly four hundred pounds per square inch. You swing an osmium-density hammer with perfect kinetic transfer. If you hit a Silt-Drake, it will not bounce off. It will liquefy."
Lyla blinked, the math slowly settling in her mind. A wide, confident grin spread across her face. She gripped the steel handle of her hammer tighter. "Understood, Master Ren."
They rounded the bend in the river.
The blockage wasn't just a dam; it was a grotesque fortress of hardened mud and uprooted trees. The river had pooled behind it, creating a massive, bubbling swamp of thick, brown sludge.
Lounging on the muddy banks were four Silt-Drakes. They were the size of draft horses, covered in dull, slate-grey scales, with six powerful, clawed legs and wide, crocodilian jaws dripping with alkaline slime.
As soon as Ren and the girls stepped into the clearing, the Drakes hissed, their reptilian eyes locking onto the intruders.
"They have the high ground," Elara noted, her eyes darting between the beasts. "And the mud between us and them is three feet deep. If we charge, we will sink, destroying our mobility."
"Exactly," Ren said, folding his arms. "Mud is a highly viscous fluid. Viscosity is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. Water has low viscosity; it splashes. Mud has high viscosity; it grips. But this particular mud is heavily saturated with the Drakes' mucus, which makes it a non-Newtonian fluid."
Kira’s silver ears perked up. "Non-New-ton-ian?"
"It means its viscosity changes depending on how much stress you apply to it," Ren explained quickly, as the Drakes began to slowly descend the muddy bank toward them. "If you step into it slowly, you will sink like a stone. But if you strike it with immense, sudden kinetic force, the particles lock together. It acts like solid concrete."
Ren pointed at the massive cow-girl. "Lyla. Liquefy the beasts. But first, pave the road."
Lyla didn't hesitate. She stepped up to the edge of the deep mud pit. She didn't step in. Instead, she raised her three-hundred-pound hammer high above her head. She engaged her core, planted her carbon-cleated boots into the solid earth, and slammed the hammer down directly onto the surface of the mud.

BOOM!
The acoustic shockwave and the immense kinetic force struck the mud. The non-Newtonian fluid violently reacted to the sudden stress. The water was forced out of the suspension, and the silicate particles locked together.
For a split second, a path of mud ten feet wide and fifty feet long instantly hardened into a solid, concrete-like surface.
"Kira! Now!" Ren commanded.
Kira didn't run. Her superconducting nervous system fired. She vanished.
The Silt-Drakes only saw a silver blur cross the hardened mud path before the mud could return to its liquid state. Kira appeared directly under the chin of the largest Drake on the left. She didn't use a massive, flashy attack. She drew her high-carbon steel dagger and effortlessly slid it right between the beast's armored throat scales, severing the carotid artery in a fraction of a second.
The beast collapsed without a sound. Kira kicked off its snout, flipping backward to avoid the geyser of blood.
The remaining three Drakes roared in fury. They opened their jaws, drawing in massive amounts of mana.
"Incoming projectiles," Elara stated coldly. She stood in front of Ren and Lyla, her hands glowing with Earth mana.
The Drakes spat massive, high-velocity spheres of hardened, acidic mud. A normal Earth Mage would have built a thick, flat wall to absorb the hits.
Elara’s mind, however, was running a statistical probability map. She saw the trajectories of the three projectiles. She calculated their velocity, their mass, and their exact point of impact.
She didn't build a wall. She raised three tiny, razor-thin wedges of stone in the air, angled at exactly forty-five degrees, placing them precisely where the mud-spheres were going to hit.
The projectiles struck the wedges. They didn't shatter the stone; the kinetic energy was perfectly redirected. The acidic mud ricocheted harmlessly off the slopes, splashing into the trees high above them.
"Mana expenditure: two percent," Elara reported, a fierce, confident smile on her face. "Variance accounted for."
"Lyla. Clear the field," Ren said softly.
Lyla charged. She leaped across the remaining gap, bringing her hammer around in a devastating horizontal arc.
The second Drake tried to bite her. It never got the chance. The cubic block of osmium-density stone connected with the beast's ribcage. The sound of shattering bone echoed through the valley like a cannon shot. The Drake was launched sideways, its internal organs instantly liquefied by the pure kinetic transfer, crashing into the third Drake and taking them both down in a tangled, broken heap.
In less than ten seconds, three Tier-3 beasts lay dead.
The girls regrouped around Ren, not even breathing heavily.
But Ren wasn't smiling. His high Intelligence stat picked up a discrepancy.
"Elara," Ren said quietly. "Look at the tracks on the bank. Look at the depth."
Elara scanned the mud near the dam. Her eyes widened. "The track depth indicates a mass of roughly four thousand pounds. Those Drakes only weighed two thousand."
Suddenly, the massive wall of the mud dam violently exploded outward.
A colossal Alpha Silt-Drake, twice the size of the others, erupted from the sludge. Its scales were pitch-black, and a dark, putrid purple mana radiated from its jaws. It wasn't just defending its territory; it was rabid, driven completely insane by the shifting mana densities of the Deep Woods.
It completely ignored the girls. Its reptilian eyes locked onto Ren—the one radiating the calmest, most concentrated energy.
The Alpha lunged, its massive jaws snapping shut with enough force to bite a carriage in half.
"Ren!" Elara screamed, trying to pull up a barrier, but the beast was too massive, and its trajectory was too erratic to map instantly.
Ren didn't move. He didn't even pull his hands out of the pockets of his white coat.
Viscosity, Ren thought calmly, as the massive jaws descended upon him. It applies to all fluids. Even blood.
Ren looked directly into the Alpha Drake’s eyes. He didn't cast a fireball. He didn't summon a lightning bolt. He extended his mana directly into the beast's cardiovascular system.
Blood is a fluid that requires a specific temperature and chemical balance to flow smoothly through veins. Ren aggressively targeted the beast's main arteries. He drastically increased the localized thermal energy while simultaneously stripping the water molecules from the blood plasma.
In a fraction of a millisecond, the Alpha Drake’s blood viscosity spiked by ten thousand percent.
The beast froze mid-lunge, suspended just two feet above Ren.
Its eyes bulged. Its veins turned pitch black beneath its scales, bulging violently against the skin. The massive heart tried to pump the blood, but it was no longer pumping a liquid. It was trying to pump thick, hardened sludge.
With a sickening, muffled pop, the immense hydrostatic pressure caused the Alpha Drake's heart to catastrophically rupture inside its chest.
The massive beast dropped like a stone, crashing into the mud directly at Ren's feet, completely dead.
Elara, Kira, and Lyla stood frozen in shock. They had seen Ren do incredible things, but killing a four-thousand-pound monster instantly, without a chant, without a single visible spell... it was terrifying.
Ren stepped calmly over the beast's snout. He knelt down, pulling a small silver scalpel from his pocket.
"Blood coagulation," Ren explained casually to his awestruck vanguard, as if he were in a classroom. "If you forcefully alter the viscosity of an enemy's blood, you don't need to pierce their armor. Biology will destroy them from the inside out."
He carefully made an incision on the back of the Alpha Drake's neck. He dug around for a moment before pulling out a small, jagged crystal. It wasn't a magic core. It was dark, pulsating with a sickly purple light, and it looked like a parasite that had dug itself into the beast's spine.
Ren’s eyes narrowed.
"This Drake wasn't just migrating," Ren said, holding the crystal up to the light. "It was infected. Driven mad by a localized mana-parasite. Something in the Deep Woods is intentionally mutating these beasts and driving them outward."
Kira’s tail drooped. "Is the stampede going to be full of these?"
"Yes," Ren said, standing up and wiping the scalpel on a cloth. He turned to look at the massive mud dam blocking their river. He raised a hand, applying a burst of thermal kinetic energy, rapidly drying the mud into brittle dust until the water pressure of the river shattered it entirely.
Fresh, clean water surged forward, rushing back down the valley toward the village.
"The stampede will be worse than I originally calculated," Ren said, looking at his three girls. The fear in their eyes was quickly replaced by the fierce, unshakeable confidence they drew from his presence. "Which means statistical probability and absolute mass won't be enough."
He turned back toward the manor.
"Rest well tonight, girls," Ren smiled, a dangerous, thrilling glint in his eye. "Tomorrow, I am going to teach you how to split an atom."
