The Atomic Archmage: Hacking the Skill Panel with Science

Chapter 12: The Friction of Daily Life

The Valerius manor was undergoing a quiet, invisible revolution.

If the Baron or his few guards noticed that the estate was suddenly spotlessly clean, that the laundry was done in record time, and that the heavy sacks of flour from the village were being carried into the pantry with zero effort, they chalked it up to Martha finally running a tight ship.

They didn't know that the new maid, Lyla, was carrying three hundred pounds of grain on one shoulder while casually humming a tavern tune, her balance perfect.

It was early morning. Ren sat in the dining room, picking at a plate of eggs. Elara stood by his chair, pouring him a cup of hot tea from the vacuum flask he had invented. She wore her crisp maid uniform, though underneath it, the pearlescent spider-silk suit provided her with perfect temperature control and absolute defense.

"Lyla is a godsend, Ren," Elara whispered, leaning down so the Baron, who was reading reports at the other end of the long table, wouldn't hear. "She lifted the entire oak dining table with one hand so I could sweep the rug under it. And she hasn't broken a single plate in a week!"

Ren smiled, taking a sip of his tea. "Proper telemetry does wonders for motor control, Elara. How is she adapting to the silk?"

"She cried for an hour when you gave it to her," Elara giggled softly. "She said she’s never owned anything softer than burlap."

"Good," Ren nodded. He finished his eggs and stood up. "Tell the girls to meet me in the cavern after their morning chores. We need to fix Lyla's anchor problem."

An hour later, the four of them were deep underground in the obsidian training cavern. The glowing runic lights cast sharp shadows across the vast space.

Lyla was panting heavily, sweat pouring down her face. She was wearing her custom white silk training suit, which stretched comfortably over her muscular, bovine-beast-kin frame. She gripped her massive, three-hundred-pound hammer, her chest heaving.

"Again," Ren commanded, sitting on a stone bench with Kira lounging against his side.

Lyla planted her feet, twisted her core, and swung the hammer at a fresh block of granite Ren had extruded from the floor.

The swing was devastating. But just as the hammer connected, Lyla's heavy leather boots slipped on the smooth obsidian floor. Her front foot slid outward, bleeding the kinetic energy from her hips. The hammer struck the stone with a dull thud, cracking it, but failing to shatter it.

Lyla fell to her knees, frustrated. "I'm sorry, Master Ren! I'm doing exactly what you said, but my feet won't stay still!"

"It's not your fault, Lyla," Ren said, standing up and walking over. He looked down at the smooth soles of her cheap leather boots. "It's a lack of friction."

"Friction?" Lyla asked, tilting her head, her cow-ears twitching.

"Friction is the force that resists motion when two objects rub against each other," Ren lectured, pulling a piece of chalk from his pocket. He drew a flat line on the floor, then a box on top of it. "Right now, you are swinging three hundred pounds of mass. By Newton's Third Law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When you push the hammer forward, the hammer is pushing you backward."

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Elara and Kira leaned in, always fascinated by Ren's invisible rules of the world.

"To stop yourself from flying backward, you rely on the friction between your boots and the floor," Ren continued. "But this obsidian is smooth, and your boots are flat. There is nothing to grip. The kinetic force of your swing is overcoming the static friction of your boots."

"So... I shouldn't swing as hard?" Lyla asked, her shoulders slumping.

"Absolutely not," Ren grinned. "Never compromise your output. We just change the variables."

Ren knelt down and placed his hands on Lyla's leather boots. He pushed a pulse of mana into the material. He didn't just harden the leather; he molecularly bonded carbon from the air into the soles, growing sharp, half-inch spikes across the bottom.

"Cleats," Ren announced, stepping back. "They will bite into the earth, or in this case, slightly scratch the obsidian, massively increasing your coefficient of static friction. Now, look at your hands."

Lyla opened her large hands. Despite her strength, the sheer torque of the steel handle was beginning to cause micro-tears in her skin.

Ren reached into his satchel and pulled out a small pouch filled with white powder. He had synthesized it the night before by calcining limestone and mixing it with a tiny bit of tree resin.

"Chalk and rosin," Ren said, taking her large hands and gently dusting her palms with the powder. It was a deeply intimate gesture for a noble to serve a beast-kin, and Lyla blushed furiously as his soft thumbs rubbed the powder into her calluses.

"This removes the moisture from your sweat and adds a microscopic layer of gripping grit," Ren explained, stepping back. "Your hands will not slip, and your feet are anchored. Try again."

Lyla stood up. She stomped her feet. The new carbon cleats clacked satisfyingly against the stone, holding firm. She gripped the steel handle of the hammer; her hands felt perfectly glued to the metal.

She took a deep breath, widened her stance, and swung.

This time, when the three-hundred-pound hammer head met the granite, Lyla didn't shift a single millimeter. All the kinetic energy transferred perfectly through the lever of her spine and into the target.

The granite block exploded with the force of a cannonball, sending a shockwave of dust through the cavern.

"Whoa!" Kira cheered, her tail wagging wildly.

Lyla stared at her hands, then at her feet, and finally at Ren. The absolute worship in her eyes was blinding. "Master Ren... I didn't slip!"

"Physics," Ren smiled. "It works every time."

His Skill Panel chimed softly in the background.

Ren clapped his hands together. "Alright, that’s enough combat training for today. You’ve all worked hard. Up to the manor. I’ve prepared a new experiment in the kitchen."

Ten minutes later, the girls were sitting around the central prep table in the kitchen, freshly bathed from the hot spring and wearing clean maid uniforms.

Ren stood at the stove. He had used a low-level, continuous thermal kinetic loop to perfectly heat a flat iron griddle.

"In my past... readings," Ren said, catching himself before he mentioned his past life, "I found a recipe for a high-carbohydrate recovery meal. It requires flour, eggs, milk, and a leavening agent to create trapped pockets of carbon dioxide gas, making them fluffy."

He poured a thick batter onto the griddle. It sizzled perfectly. A few minutes later, he placed a stack of golden-brown pancakes in front of each girl.

But he wasn't done. He pulled out a small jar of amber liquid.

"The maple trees in the eastern woods are full of sap," Ren explained, pouring the thick, sweet syrup over their stacks. "I used localized heat to boil off the water content, increasing the sugar viscosity."

Elara took the first bite. Her eyes widened, and she let out a highly un-maid-like squeak of pure joy. "Ren! It's so sweet! And soft!"

Kira simply abandoned her fork, grabbing a pancake with her hands and devouring it, getting syrup all over her nose.

Lyla, who had never eaten anything sweeter than a ripe apple, took a bite and instantly started crying happy tears again, chewing rapidly.

Ren leaned against the counter, watching his vanguard eat. He was building monsters. Lyla could shatter fortress walls, Kira could break the sound barrier, and Elara was mastering defensive angles that could redirect a dragon's breath.

But as he watched Kira lick syrup off her thumb and Elara scold her playfully while passing her a napkin, he felt a profound sense of peace.

He was going to protect this. No matter what the System, the monsters, or the Kingdom threw at them, Ren was going to keep his girls smiling, well-fed, and armed with the uncompromising laws of the universe.
