Chapter 10: Martha’s Awakening

The silence in the damp cellar was heavy, broken only by the distant, muffled sound of Kira splashing playfully in the subterranean hot spring far below.

Martha stood holding the lantern, her knuckles white gripping the iron handle. She was a woman who prided herself on knowing everything that happened within the Valerius estate. But the boy standing before her—an eight-year-old child wearing a silk bathing suit that shimmered like moonlight—was an anomaly she could no longer ignore.

"I asked you a question, Young Master," Martha said, her voice dropping its usual deferential tone, replaced by the fierce, protective edge of a mother. "You forge armor that cannot be cut. You hollow out the earth without a sound. You are training my daughter and that fox-kin for war. What is coming?"

Ren didn't flinch. He looked up at the stern Head Maid, his dark eyes entirely devoid of childish innocence. He saw the genuine fear in her posture, and he respected it.

"Step onto the stone, Martha," Ren said calmly, gesturing to the seam in the floor.

Martha hesitated, but her need for answers outweighed her fear. She stepped onto the solid stone block. Ren tapped his foot, and the massive carbon-silicate platform smoothly descended into the earth.

Martha gasped as the dark cellar gave way to the sprawling, obsidian-black cavern below. The sheer scale of it was breathtaking. Across the massive room, Elara and Kira were happily soaking in a steaming, mineral-rich hot spring, laughing as they splashed warm water at each other.

"They are happy now," Ren said softly, standing beside Martha as the platform locked into place at the bottom. "But in roughly six years, a monster stampede from the Deep Woods is going to hit this barony. The vanguard will be comprised of Tier-2 and Tier-3 beasts. The Baron's guards will be slaughtered in the first hour. The village will burn, and this manor will be torn down to its foundations."

Martha’s breath caught in her throat. "The Royal Army... we must send word to the Capital!"

"The Capital will not arrive in time to save the commoners, Martha. They never do," Ren stated, stating a cold, historical fact of Aethelgard. "If we rely on the Kingdom, we die. So, I am not relying on them. I am going to turn this estate into a fortress, and I am going to make sure the people I care about are strong enough to survive it."

Martha looked at her daughter, Elara, who was currently floating blissfully in the warm water, her new silk uniform neatly folded on a stone bench. The girl was smiling, completely safe, completely provided for.

Martha slowly turned her gaze back to Ren. The boy wasn't playing a game. He was orchestrating a massive, multi-year survival plan, and he was funding it with his own genius.

Slowly, the fear in Martha’s chest dissolved, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of awe. Her legs gave out. She dropped to her knees on the smooth obsidian floor, bowing her head so low her forehead touched the stone.

"I was a fool, My Lord," Martha whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I thought you were just a gifted child playing with magic. I see now... you are the true master of this house. My life, and Elara's life, belong to you. Command me."

Ren smiled gently. He walked over and placed a small hand on Martha’s trembling shoulder.

"Stand up, Martha. I don't need a servant shivering on the floor. I need a General to run this estate while I focus on research."

Martha stood, her eyes burning with newfound, terrifying dedication. "What do you require, Master Ren?"

"First, you require an upgrade," Ren said. "You have terrible posture from years of scrubbing floors, and I can hear the cartilage in your left knee grinding when you walk up the stairs. A General cannot lead if her body is failing."

Martha blinked in surprise. "I am thirty-two, My Lord. Aches and pains are the price of a peasant's life."

"Not in my house," Ren corrected. He pointed to the hot spring. "Go get in the water with the girls."

Martha flushed a deep crimson. "M-My Lord! I cannot bathe in the presence of my master!"

"It's not just a bath, Martha, it's a medical treatment," Ren sighed, adopting his lecture tone. "The water is saturated with dissolved magnesium and sulfates. But more importantly, I am going to pass a micro-current of bio-electrical mana through the pool. It will stimulate cellular mitosis—forcing your body to replace damaged, aging cells with fresh ones. It will flush the cortisol from your system and repair your joint tissue."

Martha didn't understand the words mitosis or cortisol, but she understood the command. Blushing furiously, she retreated behind a large stone pillar, undressed, and slipped into the steaming water opposite the girls.

Elara swam over, hugging her mother happily. "Isn't it wonderful, Mother? Ren made it just for us!"

Ren sat on the edge of the pool, rolling up his trousers to dip his feet in the water. He closed his eyes and channeled a tiny, precise frequency of lightning mana into the pool. It wasn't enough to shock them; it was just a gentle, tingling vibration.

Martha gasped. The chronic, dull ache in her lower back that she had carried since Elara was born simply... vanished. The stiffness in her knees melted away. She felt a surge of energy, her skin tightening, the heavy exhaustion of a lifetime of servitude washing away into the hot water. She felt twenty years old again.

When Martha finally stepped out of the pool and wrapped herself in a towel, she moved with the silent, fluid grace of a trained assassin rather than a tired maid.

Ren tossed her a bundle of pearlescent white fabric. "I tailored one of the arachnid-silk suits for you, too. Wear it under your uniform. It will stop a blade, and it breathes perfectly."

Martha clutched the priceless, frictionless silk to her chest. If she had been loyal before, she was now fanatical. If Ren ordered her to march into the Capital and assassinate the King, she would ask what time he wanted it done.

"Thank you, Master Ren," Martha said, her voice steady and absolute. "I will ensure your secrets are kept, and the Baron remains blind to our preparations. But..." She paused, her professional mindset immediately taking over. "If Elara and Kira are to spend their days training down here, I am short-handed upstairs. The manor still needs to be cleaned to maintain appearances."

"Hire someone from the village," Ren suggested, slipping his canvas overalls back on.

"I already did, My Lord, just this morning," Martha sighed, rubbing her temples. "She was cheap, but I am beginning to see why. She is a beast-kin, a cow-kin to be precise. She is incredibly strong, but she has broken three plates and a vase in the span of four hours. She is hopelessly clumsy."

Ren paused, tying his boots. A cow-kin? Incredible physical strength, but lacking fine motor control?

His scientific mind instantly began calculating.

Clumsiness is usually a spatial awareness issue, or an imbalance in the inner ear's vestibular system, Ren thought, a slow, excited grin spreading across his face. If I can correct her equilibrium, and apply that raw physical strength to heavy, kinetic-based weaponry...

"Martha," Ren smiled, his dark eyes gleaming in the lantern light. "Bring her down here tomorrow. I think our vanguard just found its heavy artillery."
