Chapter 8: The Barony’s Secret Plumber
The cellars beneath the Valerius manor were dark, damp, and smelled strongly of mildew and old potatoes. The stone walls were slick with moisture, and the ancient iron pipes that carried water from the nearby river clanked loudly whenever someone used the washroom upstairs.
"Young Master, please," Martha pleaded, holding a flickering oil lantern. She hovered anxiously near the wooden stairs. "This is no place for the heir to the Barony. It is filthy, and the rats down here are bold. Let me summon the village stonemason."
Ren, currently dressed in a set of surprisingly well-tailored canvas overalls, patted the rusty iron pipe running along the wall.
"The stonemason doesn't understand fluid dynamics, Martha," eight-year-old Ren replied warmly. "Besides, my water affinity needs practice. I am merely going to use a little magic to clear the rust and fix the pressure. Elara and Kira are here to assist me. We will be perfectly safe."
Martha looked at her daughter, Elara, who stood tall with her wooden staff, trying to look like an intimidating Royal Guard. Beside her, Kira the fox-kin crouched low, her amber eyes scanning the dark corners for rats, her tail swishing in anticipation of a hunt.
Unable to deny the Young Master anything, Martha sighed, bowed deeply, and retreated up the stairs. "I will prepare hot tea and lemon cakes for when you are finished, My Lord."
As soon as the heavy cellar door clicked shut at the top of the stairs, the atmosphere shifted. Elara dropped the guard act and let out a long breath. Kira immediately pounced on a shadow, disappointed to find it was just a cobweb and not a rat.
"Alright, Ren," Elara whispered, stepping closer to the center of the cellar. "Martha is gone. How are we going to build a secret training ground down here without the Baron noticing? The floor is solid stone, and beneath that is compacted earth. The tutor said moving earth requires massive, booming chants. The whole house will shake!"
"Standard earth magic shakes the house because it treats dirt like a liquid, violently pushing it out of the way," Ren explained, crouching down and placing both hands flat against the cold stone floor. "But we have a problem that standard magic ignores: The Law of Conservation of Mass."
"Conservation of what?" Kira asked, her fox ears tilting sideways.
"Mass," Ren smiled. "Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed. If I want to hollow out a massive room beneath this cellar, I can't just make the dirt disappear. If I push it outward, it will disrupt the manor's foundations, and the house will collapse on our heads."
Elara gasped, taking a quick step back. "Then how do we do it?"
"We don't move it," Ren said, his eyes glowing with a faint, terrifyingly intelligent light. "We compress it."
Ren pushed his mana into the stone and down into the earth below. He didn't use a chant. He used chemistry.
Soil was mostly composed of silicates, water, air, and organic carbon. Ren isolated the air and water, forcing them upward through the microscopic cracks in the floor to safely evaporate. Then, he focused on the silicates and the carbon.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
Diamond, Ren visualized. Graphene. Maximum atomic density.
He applied immense, localized pressure. Deep beneath the cellar floor, millions of tons of loose earth were violently squeezed together, rearranging their atomic structures. The dirt didn't vanish; it shrank, hardening into ultra-dense, impossibly strong pillars of carbon-reinforced stone.
To the girls standing in the cellar, there was no earthquake. There was no booming explosion of mana.
There was only a soft, eerie hiss as a massive square of the cellar floor simply... dropped.
Elara shrieked, grabbing Kira as the stone beneath them smoothly descended like a perfectly oiled elevator platform, leaving the old cellar above them. They went down ten feet, then twenty, then thirty.
When the platform finally halted, the girls opened their tightly shut eyes.
"Oh... my... gods," Elara breathed.
They were standing in a subterranean cavern the size of a cathedral. It was perfectly smooth. The walls were not rough dirt, but a polished, obsidian-black stone that gleamed like glass. Massive, sleek pillars supported the ceiling, perfectly spaced to distribute the weight of the manor above.
Ren hopped off the platform. "The carbon-silicate matrix I used for the pillars is roughly ten times stronger than steel. The manor is actually more structurally sound now than it was an hour ago."
Kira ran her small hands over the smooth, black walls, her tail wagging so fast it was a silver blur. "Master Ren... it's huge! We can throw rocks as fast as we want down here, and no one will hear!"
"Exactly," Ren grinned. "But a training facility isn't complete without proper recovery zones."
He walked over to a designated depression he had intentionally carved into the center of the cavern floor. He looked up at the rusty iron pipes dangling from the ceiling of the shaft they had just descended.
With a flick of his wrist, he used telekinesis to cleanly slice one of the old pipes. Fresh, cold river water poured down, filling the massive stone basin in the floor.
Once the pool was full, Ren knelt at the edge. He didn't just want a bath; he wanted a Roman luxury spa. He fed a constant, low-level thermal kinetic loop into the water, raising the temperature to a perfect, muscle-soothing heat. Then, he altered the mineral composition of the surrounding stone, allowing natural salts and sulfurs to leach safely into the water, giving it a faint, sweet, earthy scent.
A thick, warm mist began to rise, filling the cold cavern with absolute comfort.
"Training will be harsh over the next few years," Ren said, turning back to the girls. He unbuttoned his canvas overalls, revealing a silk bathing suit he had worn underneath specifically for this moment. "Muscle fibers will tear. Lactic acid will build up. This mineral hot spring will drastically accelerate your cellular recovery."
Elara and Kira stared at the steaming, pristine pool. The idea of having a massive, private, heated bath—something only kings possessed—hidden entirely underground was too much for their young minds to process.
Kira didn't hesitate. She practically tore off her training clothes and dove into the water with a joyful splash. Her head popped up a second later, her fox ears drooping happily as she let out a long, blissful sigh. "It's so warm... Lady Elara, get in!"
Elara, ever the proper maid-in-training, blushed deeply, looking away from Ren as she carefully stepped out of her uniform. She slipped into the steaming water, the heat instantly melting away the soreness from her slingshot practice earlier that day.
Ren waded in, leaning back against the smooth obsidian edge, closing his eyes as the girls splashed playfully on the other side of the pool.
He was spoiling them, yes. But a loyal vanguard was a motivated vanguard.
Suddenly, the blue Skill Panel flickered in his peripheral vision.
[System Scan: Sector 4]

[Error: Void space detected beneath Valerius Estate. Classifying as natural sinkhole.]
Ren smirked, letting the warm water lap against his chin. The System was stupid. It couldn't comprehend atomic compression, so it just assumed nature had made a mistake.
He had his hidden base. He had his loyal squad. Tomorrow, the real physics training would begin, and by the time that stampede arrived, the Valerius Barony wouldn't just be a manor—it would be an impenetrable fortress.
