Chapter 3: The Thermodynamics of Loyalty
Kira had been living at the Valerius estate for three months, and every morning, she woke up convinced she was trapped in a very elaborate dream.
Instead of a freezing barn floor, she slept on a thick, woven rug right next to the hearth in the Young Master’s room, wrapped in a goose-down blanket so soft it felt like sleeping on a cloud. Her silver fur, once matted and dull with dirt, now shone brilliantly thanks to the scented soaps Master Ren insisted she use. She had three square meals a day—actual meat and fresh bread, not scraps!
And her "duties" mostly consisted of playing in the gardens, fetching books, and being constantly fussed over by Elara.
It was mid-summer, and the countryside heat was sweltering. The sun beat down on the manor, turning the stone halls stuffy and oppressive.
In the manor’s massive, stone-flagged kitchen, Ren stood on a wooden stool to reach the central prep table. Kira sat on the floor, her bushy tail flicking lazily in the heat, while Elara stood beside Ren, her hands on her hips, watching him with intense suspicion.
"Ren," Elara said, wiping a bead of sweat from her forehead. "Why did you use your entire month's allowance to buy a sack of refined sugar and two jugs of fresh cream? Martha is going to scold you."
"Martha is going to thank me," Ren corrected, pouring the heavy cream into a large copper bowl, followed by a generous scoop of the expensive sugar and a handful of crushed summer berries.
"Are you making a soup?" Kira asked, her fox ears twitching. "A sweet soup?"
"Better," Ren smiled. "In the Capital, only the Royal Family and the highest Dukes can afford to eat ice during the summer. They have to hire specialized Ice Mages to freeze water, which takes massive amounts of mana. It's incredibly inefficient."
"Because Ice Magic is a Tier-3 affinity," Elara recited proudly, remembering her tutor's lessons. "You have to summon the absolute cold from the Spirit Realm and force it into the water."
Ren sighed softly. "Elara, there is no such thing as 'absolute cold' as an energy source. Cold isn't a thing. Cold is just the absence of heat."
Both girls tilted their heads, completely lost.
"Look," Ren said, holding his small hands out over the copper bowl. "Heat is just movement. The molecules in this cream are vibrating quickly because it's warm in this kitchen. To make it cold, I don't need to 'summon' ice. I just need to steal their kinetic energy. I just need to make the molecules... hold still."
Ren focused. He didn't use a chant. He didn't visualize glowing blue magic circles. He simply reached out with his mana and acted as a thermal sink. He absorbed the kinetic energy from the cream, bleeding the excess heat out into the surrounding air.
Within seconds, a thick, white mist began to pour over the edges of the copper bowl. Frost crawled up the sides of the metal.

Kira gasped, scrambling backward as the sudden wave of freezing air hit her nose. Elara’s eyes went wide as saucers.
Ren picked up a wooden spoon and began to rapidly churn the mixture as it rapidly dropped below freezing, breaking up the ice crystals to ensure a smooth, creamy texture. A minute later, he pulled the spoon out. Attached to it was a thick, pink, semi-solid scoop of sweet cream.
"I call it Ice Cream," Ren announced. He grabbed two small wooden bowls, dropped a generous scoop into each, and handed them to the girls.
Elara looked at it as if it were a bomb. Kira, however, trusted Ren implicitly. She dipped a finger into the bowl and popped it into her mouth.
Kira froze. Her amber eyes dilated. Her silver ears shot straight up, vibrating, and her fluffy tail began to wag so violently it was a blur. She grabbed her spoon and began shoveling the cold, sweet, creamy treat into her mouth with terrifying speed.
"It's cold! It's sweet! It melts!" Kira squeaked between bites, completely overwhelmed by the sensory explosion.
Seeing Kira’s reaction, Elara took a delicate bite. Her strict, bossy demeanor instantly dissolved. A blush of pure bliss spread across her cheeks. "Ren... this is... this is magic. Real magic. It's the most delicious thing I've ever tasted."
"What is going on in my kitchen?"
The stern voice of Martha, the Head Maid, echoed from the doorway. She marched in, ready to scold the children for playing with the expensive sugar.
Ren calmly scooped a third bowl and held it out to the intimidating woman. "Try it, Martha. It will help with the heat."
Martha narrowed her eyes, but she couldn't refuse the Young Lord. She took a small bite.
For three seconds, the kitchen was dead silent. Then, Martha—the strictest, most unshakeable woman in the barony—dropped her hands to her sides, her knees visibly weakening. She looked at the pink cream as if she had just seen the face of a god.
"Young Master," Martha whispered, her voice trembling. "If you sold this in the Capital... you could buy the entire kingdom."
Ren smiled, leaning against the counter. He didn't care about the kingdom. He looked at Kira, whose face was covered in pink cream, and Elara, who was scraping the bottom of her bowl with desperate enthusiasm. He was going to spoil them all rotten.
Suddenly, a sharp PING echoed in Ren's mind.
The blue Skill Panel forcibly materialized in front of his eyes, glowing violently. The text wasn't white this time. It was flashing red.

[Recalculating...]
Ren’s smile vanished. Database? Logic error? This wasn't just a status screen. The system was actively watching him.
Before he could process the implications, the heavy wooden doors of the kitchen banged open. Baron Valerius stood in the doorway, his face pale, clutching a scroll sealed with the terrifying, golden wax crest of the Royal Academy.
"Ren," his father said, his voice tight with an emotion Ren couldn't quite place. Fear? Awe? "The Royal Inspectors are here. They brought a mana-crystal resonance reader. They... they want to test your affinity."
Ren looked at the flashing red warning on his floating screen, and then at the terrified look on his father's face.
If the Royal Inspectors scanned him right now, they wouldn't just find a 'Trash Class' omni-affinity. They were going to find an anomaly that the planetary system itself was currently freaking out about.
