Is it Wrong to Have a Harem in DxD

Ch.28

The ORC clubroom was quiet. Thursday afternoon, no Devil business, everyone pretending to study. Kiba was reading at the window. Koneko was on the couch with a bag of konpeito, gold eyes on a light novel. Akeno was in the kitchenette making tea. Asia had her textbook open and was mouthing vocabulary words, her lips moving silently over the kanji.

Rias was behind the desk, pen in hand, working on a ledger and what looked like territorial boundary maps. The Kuoh jurisdiction, probably. She and Sona divided the town's supernatural monitoring duties with the precision of two people who'd been competing since childhood and would die before ceding a single block.

I was on the couch across from Koneko, shoes off, feet on the coffee table, reading a manga I'd grabbed from the library because it had a cool cover and turned out to be about competitive bread-baking. It was weirdly compelling. The main character had just performed a technique called Solar Hands and I was trying to figure out if the author was serious.

The room was warm. The candles on the shelves were doing their flicker thing. Akeno's tea smelled like green tea and a floral note I'd started associating with Thursday afternoons in this room. Rias's pen scratched on paper. Koneko ate a konpeito with a small crunch.

Then the air changed.

The pressure hit before the light did. Like someone had opened a door to winter. The temperature dropped. Koneko stopped chewing. Kiba's hand moved to the table edge where his sword-creation reflex lived. Akeno set down the teapot. Rias's pen stopped.

A magic circle materialized in the center of the floor. Silver light, not red. The sigils rotating in its rings were different from Rias's Gremory circles. I recognized the pattern from the anime before the logical part of my brain caught up: Lucifer clan. The current Lucifer. Sirzechs.

The circle pulsed. The light intensified and the cold deepened and everyone in the room was on their feet except me. I put the bread manga down.

She stepped through.

Silver hair, long, braided and falling past her waist. Red eyes. A face that was beautiful and severe and completely still. She was wearing a French maid uniform, black and white, immaculate, the kind of outfit that should have looked absurd on a woman radiating enough power to flatten the building and instead looked like armor. She was tall. Taller than Rias. She stood like someone who had never slouched in her life and never would.

Grayfia Lucifuge. The Strongest Queen. Sirzechs Lucifer's wife. The woman who'd dueled Serafall Leviathan to a draw for ten days during the Devil Civil War and walked away from it like she'd been filing paperwork.

The cold in the room wasn't metaphorical. The air had dropped. My breath didn't fog but it was close.

"Grayfia-sama," Rias said. Her voice was controlled. The heiress register, locked in tight. She'd stood from her desk and her hands were at her sides and her back was straight. "This is unexpected."

"Rias-sama." Grayfia's voice matched her face. Calm, precise, pitched to carry without raising. "I apologize for arriving unannounced. I am here on official business from Lord Sirzechs Lucifer."

Rias's jaw tightened. She knew. Before Grayfia said another word, Rias already knew what this was about.

"The Phenex family has formally accelerated the engagement timeline," Grayfia said. "Lord Phenex has petitioned the Lucifer office for an expedited ceremony. The petition has been received and acknowledged."

While she spoke, her eyes moved to me. Quick. A glance that lasted less than a second before returning to Rias. She knew who I was. She'd known before she walked through the circle.

The room was very quiet. Akeno's smile had gone flat. Kiba was standing straight by the window, his face careful. Koneko had set down her konpeito and was watching Rias with gold eyes that gave away nothing. Asia looked from face to face, confused.

"On what grounds," Rias said.

"Recent events in the Kuoh territory have drawn attention from multiple factions. The Phenex family considers the situation unstable. They have requested the ceremony be moved to within the month."

Rias's hands moved. Under the desk where she thought nobody could see them, her fingers curled into fists. The knuckles went white. The desk creaked once, faintly, under the pressure of her thumbs pressing against the underside.

Her fists were visible from where I sat. Grayfia saw them too. Her red eyes tracked the movement for half a second, then returned to Rias's face.

"Lord Riser Phenex has been informed and will be arriving shortly to discuss the arrangements in person," Grayfia said. "He will arrive here."

"Here?" Akeno's voice, soft, the smile gone entirely. "In Rias's territory?"

"Lord Sirzechs has authorized the transit as a diplomatic courtesy."

Which meant Sirzechs had allowed Riser to teleport directly into Rias's clubroom. Into her space. I knew from the anime that Sirzechs was playing a longer game, that the permission was strategic, but Rias didn't know that. To her, her brother had opened the door for her fiancé to walk through it.

Her jaw was set and her eyes were flat and her fists were hidden and she hadn't flinched once.

Grayfia's gaze moved.

To me.

Her red eyes found mine across the room and held. A brief assessment, economical. The independent Sacred Gear wielder who'd killed Raynare's cell and refused Rias's peerage. Sirzechs had been briefed. Of course he had.

I held the look. I didn't sit up straighter or square my shoulders or do anything that signaled I was performing for her. I just didn't look away. Her eyes were red and cold and old, and I met them because that was how I looked at people.

One second. Two. Her left eyelid dipped. A single blink, fractional, and her mouth moved by a degree that would have been invisible if I hadn't been watching. She'd expected the boy who refused peerage to be defiant or performing toughness, and he was sitting on a couch with his shoes off looking at her like she'd interrupted his reading.

She looked away first. Turned back to Rias.

Ddraig hummed at the back of my skull. Low. Attentive.

"That woman is dangerous," she said. Quiet. "Satan-class aura compressed into a maid uniform. She could kill everyone in this room before the tea finished cooling."

I know.

"You held her gaze."

I know.

"…Interesting."

Rias was speaking. Formal words in the formal register, acknowledging the message, requesting time to prepare. Grayfia nodded. The maid composure was back in full. She positioned herself by the wall, hands folded. The referee. Whatever happened next, she was the authority in the room.

I picked the bread manga back up. Opened it to the page I'd been on. I wasn't reading it. But Grayfia could see me from her position by the wall.

The candles flickered.

Then the floor caught fire.

A magic circle erupted in the center of the room, and this one was nothing like Grayfia's clean silver light. This one was flames. Orange and gold, licking upward from the sigils, heat rolling off it in waves that pushed against my face and dried my eyes. The Phenex clan crest rotated in the center of the circle, a phoenix wreathed in fire, and the flames were real. The carpet under the circle started to smolder. Koneko pulled her feet up onto the couch.

The fire parted. A figure stepped through.

Tall. Blonde hair, swept back, styled like someone who spent thirty minutes on it and wanted you to think it took five. White nobleman's coat with gold trim, open at the chest, showing muscle. Blue eyes, sharp, amused. A half-smirk that looked permanent, like his face had been built around it.

Riser Phenex. Third son of the Phenex clan. High-Class Devil with immortal regeneration, a full peerage of fifteen women, and the attitude of a man who'd never been told no by anyone who mattered.

Behind him, stepping through the flames: a woman. Purple wavy hair, half-lidded eyes, a bust that drew the eye before the brain could stop it, a staff scepter held loosely in one hand. Yubelluna. The Bomb Queen. Riser's Queen piece. And behind her, two more girls I didn't bother identifying because my eyes were on Riser and they weren't leaving.

He looked exactly like the anime. Down to the smirk and the coat. The other characters had all looked different from what I'd expected in person. Riser didn't. He was his animation model walking around in three dimensions.

The flames died. Riser surveyed the ORC with the expression of someone inspecting a property he was about to acquire.

"My dear Rias." His voice was smooth and loud and filled the room without trying. He crossed to the desk in three strides and took Rias's hand before she could pull it back. He pressed his lips to her knuckles. Lingered. His blue eyes were on hers the entire time and the smirk didn't waver.

"Riser." Rias's voice was ice.

"You've been busy." He didn't release her hand. His other hand came up and touched her hair, crimson strands running between his fingers. "All this fuss over a few dead crows. You really should leave the pest control to professionals."

Rias pulled her hand free. The motion was sharp and her jaw was tight and Riser let her go with the ease of someone who knew he'd be taking that hand again soon enough, permanently.

He turned to the room. His eyes swept across the ORC. Akeno got a look. "The Priestess of Thunder. A fine Queen. Decent enough." Kiba got a glance. "A pretty swordsman." Koneko didn't even get words. Asia got less.

His gaze landed on me last. I was still on the couch. Manga open. Shoes off.

"And who," Riser said, "is this?"

His hand was still near Rias. His fingers had been on her hair, on her skin. The smirk was aimed at me now and his blue eyes were dismissive and bored.

I didn't decide to stand up. I just did.

The Boosted Gear materialized.

I hadn't called it. Hadn't triggered it, hadn't flexed, hadn't thought about it. The red gauntlet crawled up my left arm from the wrist, metal plates locking into place with a sound like armor being forged, gold spikes along the knuckles, the green jewel on the back pulsing bright enough to throw my shadow against the wall behind me. The light filled the room. The candles guttered.

The room went silent.

Riser's smirk loosened. His blue eyes went to the gauntlet and stayed there and for the first time since he'd walked through his fire circle, he was looking at something in this room like it might actually matter.

Grayfia's eyes were on my arm. Her hands were still folded but her weight had shifted forward by an inch.

Rias was looking at me. Her fists were still clenched but her eyes were wide and the ice in her expression had broken and I couldn't tell what was underneath from across the room.

Koneko had stopped eating entirely.

Akeno's mouth was curved. The sadist smile. The one she wore when things were about to get interesting.

"Your anger triggered the Gear," Ddraig said. "Interesting."

I looked at Riser. He was three feet from Rias and his hand was still half-raised from touching her hair and the fire from his entrance was still warm on the floor and the Boosted Gear was humming on my arm in a frequency I felt in my teeth.

I didn't answer his question. The gauntlet pulsed green.
