Poisoned Rationality

Chapter 3: Remembering the Past

-Estelle-

While Nyx cried in my arms, I noticed Ophelia poke her head in through the door.

“Don’t come in yet,” I told her telepathically. “Wait until she’s calm.”

“What happened?” Ophelia asked.

“She asked what our names were,” I explained. “Then she hugged me and started crying.”

“I’ll explain to Aetheros,” Ophelia said before ducking out of the room.

After a few minutes, Nyx stopped crying and curled up on top of me. I kept my arms around her as she shuffled until she found a comfortable position. As she did so, I let Ophelia know that Nyx was ready.

My sister opened the door and burst inside, making Nyx jump.

“Sorry,” She said as I glared at her. “Anyways, Nyx, this is the God of Creation, Aetheros.”

A tall man stepped through the door. He wore drab-colored, loose clothing and a strange hairstyle. His short hair was very wavy on one side, where it fell down his head like a waterfall, while the other side was trimmed to barely a centimeter long.

“Hello, Nyx,” Aetheros said. “I’ve learned that you have lost your memories. I would like to help you get them back. Is that okay?”

“Y-yes,” Nyx said, nodding her head. “H-how?”

“Do you know that you were a god?” Aetheros asked. Nyx nodded. “Well, because you died as a god, your memories and power have been locked away. To regain them, you’ll have to live in the mortal plane. Do you have any questions so far?”

“W-will g-get to s-see Stella?” Nyx asked.

Aetheros smiled and nodded. “Yes. It won’t start right away, but once a month, you’ll be transported to the divine domain for a single night to spend time together. While you are on the mortal plane, you can complete many different tasks to gain experience.”

“Experience? Like a video game?” Ophelia asked.

“Like a what?” I asked.

“It’s a thing from a different plane,” Ophelia explained.

“Can we stay on topic?” Aetheros asked grumpily.

“Sorry,” Ophelia apologized sheepishly.

“Thank you,” Aetheros said. “So, experience helps you gain levels.” Ophelia sighed. “At each level, your power will increase, and you’ll gain a little bit of divinity and regain a little of your memories.”

“You said that us being able to spend the day together won’t start right away,” I pointed out. “When will it start?”

“Once Nyx reaches level ten,” Aetheros explained. “When she starts leveling up, it’ll happen pretty fast. Also, you’ll be able to talk telepathically whenever you’re separated, too.”

“W-will I s-start as b-baby?” Nyx asked.

“You will be reborn, yes,” Aetheros replied. “You will retain your current body’s general form and will mature over time. Once you reach a certain maturity, you’ll stop aging completely.”

“O-okay,” Nyx said. “I a-am r-ready.” She turned to me and hugged me. Her tails curled around our bodies, keeping us together.

“I love you,” I told her, resting my forehead against hers. “I’ll be waiting.”

Then she pulled away and stepped toward Aetheros. He began using his magic, weaving a powerful spell.

With a burst of power, Nyx disappeared.

She was coming back. I knew it.

-Nyxandria-

It was dark.

It was also warm. I didn’t know what it was, but it felt nice.

Then everything shifted, and suddenly it was very bright. I whimpered and tried to block out the light, but my body didn’t move like I wanted it to.

Strong hands picked me up as I began to wail.

“She’s a healthy baby girl,” A deep voice said. I felt warmth surrounding me, and I began to quiet. I closed my eyes as tightly as I could to block out the bright light.

Then something pressed against my mouth, and I tasted something yummy. I began to suck, feeding from whatever this thing was.

It occurred to me then that this was probably my mother feeding me. I didn’t care, though. I was hungry.

“Why does her tail look weird?” I heard a young-sounding voice ask.

“Hmm?” The same deep voice from before said. “Ahh, I see. This is a condition called ‘Split Tail Syndrome’. It means that she will have two tails instead of one.”

“Is it bad?” A feminine voice close by asked.

“No, Mrs. Arilis, your daughter is fine,” Deep-voice guy replied. “In fact, as a Dokukyoku wendigo, having two tails means she will have two stingers once she matures.”

“I see,” My mother said.

“Do we know what her name is?” A different deep voice asked.

“The diviner has not given us a result as of yet,” Deep-voice one answered. “I expect we will receive it soon.”

Just then, there was the sound of a sliding wooden door opening and footsteps entering the room.

“Mr. and Mrs. Arilis, a name has been received from the heavens,” A new voice said. “The child’s name is Nyxandria.”

I heard a small ding, and words entered my mind.

Status (Lvl 0):

Name: Nyxandria Arilis

Race: Dokukyoku Wendigo (Twintailed)

Age: 0/0/0

Level: 0 (0% EXP)

Statistics:

Str: F Vit: E

Int: A Dex: F

Agi: F Def: C

HP: 100% F

MP: 0% F

Whoa, that was cool. As I looked at the different parts of the status, some smaller boxes of text popped up with explanations.

Status (Lvl 0) -- The status in its most basic form, with the bare minimum of information.

Race: Dokukyoku Wendigo (Twintailed) -- ’Poisonous thorn’ Wendigo with two tails.

Age: 0/0/0 -- 0 Years / 0 Months / 0 Days

It was all pretty interesting and comprehensive. Although my stats were almost all horrible. The only good one was Int.

I dismissed the text with my mind and finally opened my eyes. My tiny body was resting atop a wendigo woman with dark green hair and bone-white antlers curving above her head.

Around her were two tall male wendigo, one wearing simple clothes and the other wearing doctor's clothes with blue hair. A young female wendigo was standing nearby, peering down at me.

“Ryla, would you like to say hello?” My mother asked the young girl, who nodded sheepishly.

She reached out one hand to stroke my head gently. I tried to look and see what she was doing, and she giggled.

“Hello, baby sister,” She said.

I wiggled in place, feeling happy.

Then, my sister cuddled up against Mother, also hugging me in the process. I felt myself struggling to stay awake as my newborn body ran out of energy.
