Chapter 323 Darla lied
Cynthia suddenly caught a whiff of a pleasant scent. She couldn’t help but follow it, leading her to the dining room, where she found a neatly laid-out breakfast waiting on the table.
A French sandwich and soy milk.
It was still steaming.
Stephan frowned, following closely behind Cynthia.
“Mom, what exactly are you trying to do?”
Cynthia turned around and pointed at the breakfast on the table. “Who did you make this breakfast for?”
“I made it for myself.”
Cynthia glared at him, not believing a word of it. “Don’t give me that. This breakfast hasn’t even been touched!”
Stephan chuckled. “I made it, but I haven’t had a chance to eat it yet. Is that amproblem?”
Cynthia eyed him.
Her face screamed, “I don’t believe you!”
She changed the subject, “Your girlfriend must be here, right?”
Stephan gulped.
Cynthia cut straight to the chase, “I want to see her.”
Stephan took a deep breath. “Mom, didn’t I tell you I’d bring her home to meet you thismweekend? Is it really that urgent?”
Cynthia glared at him. “You’re about to get deceived, how could I not be worried?”
Stephan sensed something was off. “What do you mean, ‘I’m about to be deceived’?”
Instead of answering, Cynthia asked, “First tell me, who is this girlfriend you’re dating?”
“She’s a beautiful and lovely woman.”
Cynthia shot him a withering look. “Beauty can’t put food on the table. What’s special about being good looking? A good personality and character are the top priorities! I’m not asking for her to be perfect, but surely her character and values should be decent, at the very least?”
“What if she has ulterior motives and is plotting against you and our family? You can’t just take someone like that lightly.”
Stephan frowned. “Mom, aren’t you overthinking this? You haven’t even met her yet, and you’re already suspecting she has ulterior motives?”
Cynthia said earnestly, “I’m just unsure, which is why I rushed over to see what kind of girl she really is.”
“No matter how anxious you are, couldn’t you have waited until the weekend?”
“You don’t understand the agony of lying awake at night, anxious and restless because of your situation!”
Stephan sighed heavily.
Typical case of asking for trouble.
He narrowed his dark eyes, fixing his gaze on Cynthia. “Mom, did someone say something to you?”
Cynthia didn’t hide anything from him and confessed directly, “Darla told me yesterday that she met your girlfriend and said she’s a scheming woman. She’s an orphan. She’s after your money and influence, so she’s actively approaching you and seducing you, all to scheme her way into your wealth and drain you of everything!”
Stephan’s eyes darkened.
Great. That Darla again!
He hadn’t even confronted her yet, and she’d already gone running to his mother to spout nonsense.
He’d remember this one for sure!
Stephan’s expression turned cold. “Mom, you believe everything Darla says, but you don’t trust your own son? Your son has seen it all, he’s been through so much. What kind of woman hasn’t he met? Do you really think I’d let a scheming woman with ulterior motives get close to me?”
Cynthia choked on her words. “I...I didn’t believe it at first either, but Darla insisted she’d seen your girlfriend and was certain she was that kind of person, so that’s why I...”
“Mom, she’s the one who deceived you! It’s true she’s met my girlfriend, but she’s just jealous. Since she can’t have me, she’s slandering her. None of what she told you is true, she deliberately spread those lies to make you misunderstand my girlfriend and ruin your relationship with my woman.”
Cynthia couldn’t believe it. “How could that be? How can Darla possibly be that kind of woman?”
Stephan’s thin lips twitched into a cold smile. “Mom, would you rather believe her than your own son?”
Cynthia was momentarily at a loss for words.
She recalled Darla’s confident tone and had concluded that Darla wouldn’t deceive her.
Could it be...
Had Darla really lied to her?
Cynthia was half-convinced, half-doubtful. “If what you’re saying is true, then what’s wrong with letting me see her? If you won’t let me see her, I won’t feel at ease!”
“She’s still resting. It’s best not to disturb her.”
“I won’t disturb her rest. I’ll just wait here until she wakes up. Is that okay?”
Stephan frowned. “Don’t you have to go to work at the hospital today?”
Cynthia put her hands on her hips. “It’s my hospital. I’ll go to work if I want to, and I won’t if I have something else doing. It’s none of your business!”
In truth , she had already swapped shifts with a colleague.
“But I have to go to work.”
“Then go to work. I’ll wait here by myself. Don’t worry, I won’t bully her behind your back.”
Stephan sighed.
It seemed his mother was determined to meet Alana today.
They had originally planned to meet this weekend, but with this sudden change, he wasn’t sure how she would react.
Just then, Alana’s soft, sweet voice drifted closer.
“Stephan, are you still home?”
The moment Cynthia heard it, she instantly transformed into a motor and darted out of the dining room.
Stephan didn’t even have time to stop her.
As soon as Cynthia ran out of the dining room, she saw the girl coming down the stairs.
She was wearing a pristine white spaghetti-strap nightgown, her figure slender and graceful.
Her jet-black hair fell softly down her back.
Her features were delicate and petite, her skin smooth and as white as jade. At first glance, she looked just like a fragrant, soft cake.
When Cynthia got a clear look at the girl’s face, she froze in her tracks. “Miss Alana? What are you doing here?”
Alana had come out to check on the commotion she’d heard downstairs.
She thought something had happened to Stephan, so she hadn’t even changed her clothes, she’d come out wearing her spaghetti-strap nightgown.
She never imagined that the person greeting her wouldn’t be Stephan, but Stephan’s mother.
“Dr. Cynthia?”
Alana was so shocked her legs went weak, and she nearly fell down the stairs.
Fortunately, she managed to grab the banister in time, preventing any mishap.
But her heart was racing so wildly it felt like it was about to leap out of her throat.
What on earth was going on?
Why so suddenly?!
Help! Could she run away now?
Run far, far away right now!
Just as she was at a loss for what to do, Stephan stepped out of the dining room just in time, glanced quickly at Alana, and gave her a reassuring look.
As if to tell her that with him there, nothing bad would happen.
Alana met the man’s determined gaze, and her anxious heart gradually calmed down a little.
Thank goodness, he was still there.
Cynthia’s suspicious gaze fell on Alana. “Miss Alana, what are you doing at my son’s place? And dressed so revealingly?”
She didn’t think anything of it at first; after all, as far as she knew, Alana already had a boyfriend.
Alana blushed, nervously clutching the hem of her skirt, unsure how to explain. “I...”
Stephan was speechless. He strode over to Cynthia. “Mom, it’s so obvious, can’t you see it?”
Cynthia frowned and couldn’t help but scold her son, “See what? Miss Alana is the cleaning lady you hired. How can you let her stay here? What kind of example is that setting? Won’t her boyfriend have a problem with that?”
Stephan couldn’t help but roll his eyes, then strode directly over to Alana.
He wrapped his arm around her slender waist and led her back to stand before Cynthia.
