Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking

Chapter 97: How Is This Not Mocking the Fiancé for His Incompetence?

"Will this suffice?" Clayton Lowell forced a smile. "I was just casually chatting with some friends..."

"Casually chatting? At your age, you still can’t watch your mouth? Don’t you know what’s appropriate to say and what isn’t?"

"The Lowell Group issues a clarification one minute, and the next you’re undermining it. Have you lost your mind?"

The directors weren’t buying it and began berating Clayton Lowell to his face.

Clayton Lowell’s face twisted for a moment, but he still had to maintain a fake smile.

Years ago, Caleb Lowell had only been able to take control of the Lowell Group thanks to the support of these very directors.

In fact, Clayton Lowell had considered taking power himself back then, but he had absolutely no management skills. The company had nearly been driven into the ground under his control.

Back then, the directors had berated him to his face just like this, telling him to be self-aware and step aside if he was incompetent. Only then did he put Caleb Lowell in charge.

But over the years, as Caleb Lowell grew more and more successful, Clayton’s status in the company as his uncle had also risen. It had been a long time since anyone had dared to yell at him like this.

Besides, his assistant and secretaries were right outside the office. Where was he supposed to put his face?

Although Clayton Lowell was seething with resentment, he knew perfectly well who he depended on.

He rushed to explain to Caleb Lowell, "Sean, I really didn’t mean to undermine you..."

Caleb Lowell’s expression was grave. "Uncle, you shouldn’t have done that. You nearly made the situation irreparable."

The Lowell Group issues a clarification, but a member of the Lowell family privately confirms the marriage alliance. What are the Lynches supposed to think?

Clayton Lowell apologized profusely again, and only then did Caleb Lowell see the directors out.

Once the meeting room was empty, Clayton Lowell finally threw his phone in a rage, smashing it.

In fact, Jane Lancaster was right. The moment Caleb Lowell instructed the PR department to prepare a clarification, Clayton Lowell was the first to hear about it and immediately rounded up several directors to stop him.

The directors were initially pressuring Caleb Lowell not to issue the statement, but then Zachary Lynch himself unexpectedly called, demanding that the Lowell Group clarify the matter.

For various reasons, the directors finally agreed to let the PR department draft a statement.

Unable to stop it and feeling pissed off, Clayton Lowell had deliberately posted those words in the group chat.

That way, everyone would assume the clarification was just a PR stunt and that his words were the real truth. Public opinion would continue to spiral, and he refused to believe Jane Lancaster could shake the homewrecker label.

But who would have known that idiot, Lana Sterling, would get caught red-handed by Zachary Lynch!

What he hadn’t expected at all was that the Lynch family and Beverly Lynch would be willing to get involved in this mess, proactively clarifying the matter without even telling them!

Now he was utterly disgraced. He wouldn’t even dare to show his face in public for a while.

It took Lana Sterling a long moment to realize what had happened.

’I’m so screwed! My nephew used my own phone to sabotage my dreamboat!’

"Jasper Sterling, give me back my phone! That’s my phone!" She was so angry she felt like she was going to faint.

How could she possibly face Clayton Lowell now?

Jasper Sterling scrolled through the phone, casually blocked Clayton Lowell, and then handed it back to Lana.

"Auntie, I see you were in the group helping Miss Lynch post the clarification video. You know, if it weren’t for you, we never would have known a rumor-mongering group like that even existed. Thanks to you, we were able to debunk the lies right away and stop them from spreading."

Zachary Lynch also looked grateful. "Thank you so much for speaking up for Mandy in the group. I’ll be sure to have Mandy come and thank you in person some other day."

Lana Sterling: "..."

’No, that’s not it at all! I was just in it for the gossip, to be the center of attention!’

’Now that I’ve offended my dreamboat, I’m so worried I’m going to go bald. If Beverly Lynch shows up at my door to thank me, isn’t that just going to make things worse?’

Zachary Lynch left as soon as he finished speaking, telling Jasper Sterling not to see him out.

Lana Sterling looked at her nephew, and suddenly, it hit her!

’This whole thing has nothing to do with Jasper, so why is he being so helpful? Could it be because... he wants to marry Beverly Lynch?’

’That would make perfect sense.’

’No wonder the Lynch family was so adamant, and no wonder Beverly Lynch swore up and down that she’d never even liked Caleb Lowell!’

Lana was so envious she could have cried. Why could other people fall in love and get engaged just like that?

She’d been pursuing Clayton Lowell for so long with zero progress, and now she’d even offended him.

When she got home and saw Uncle Lynn, Lana couldn’t help but pour out her woes. "Uncle Lynn, Jasper went too far! He sacrificed my love life for his own!"

Uncle Lynn nearly choked on his tea. He took a moment to compose his thoughts. "Actually, the young master is the one who’s truly suffering!"

’Falling for another man’s fiancée must be agonizing, right? It’s pure self-torture, having to watch them be all lovey-dovey while you can only fester in some dark corner, going mad with jealousy.’

Lana: "What does he have to suffer about? Because the girl has a boyfriend?"

Uncle Lynn sighed. "So you understand."

’I can feel it. The closer the engagement party gets, the worse Master Jasper sleeps, and the more ruthless his attacks on the Lowell Group become.’

Lana looked utterly baffled. "If he wants her, he should just go and take her. What’s there to suffer about?"

’Could that pretty boy really be a match for him?’

Uncle Lynn: "..."

’That... actually makes a lot of sense! Don’t tell me the young master is planning to crash the engagement party and steal the bride? Is he really going to do something that dramatic?’

Seeing the incoming call from Caleb Lowell, Jane Lancaster quickly answered.

With Pauline Shaw right there, she smiled and thanked him. "Thank you for convincing the Lynch Group to issue that clarification statement."

On the other end of the line, Caleb Lowell’s voice faltered. "Jay, I think you’ve misunderstood something."

Jane: "There’s no misunderstanding. Pauline confirmed with you that you were the one who had the Lynch Group issue the statement, and you said yes. Or was that not the case?"

’No way. Did Pauline Shaw really screw up that badly?’

Hearing this thought, Pauline Shaw rushed over. "Cousin, if you did it, you did it. There’s no reason not to admit it."

She guessed that Caleb Lowell was just afraid Jane would feel indebted to him if she found out, so he was keeping it a secret.

But she was determined to make Jane Lancaster understand just how high a price her cousin had paid for her.

Caleb Lowell took a deep breath. He understood now where the mix-up had occurred.

He had misheard her earlier, thinking she was asking about the Lowell Group, which was why he had simply said yes.

He’d thought only Pauline Shaw knew, but he never imagined she would tell Jane Lancaster. Now he was completely humiliated in front of Jane.

"I didn’t do it," Caleb Lowell said, his voice laced with embarrassment.

Pauline Shaw was completely stunned. "If it wasn’t you, then who else could it have been?" she demanded.

Caleb Lowell: "...Pauline Shaw, shut up!"

Startled by his fierce tone, Pauline Shaw didn’t dare say another word.

Caleb Lowell: "Jay, I’m sorry."

Jane: "Why are you apologizing? You already had the Lowell Group help me with a clarification. That’s more than enough. Thank you."

Caleb Lowell: "..."

He couldn’t shake the feeling that Jane Lancaster’s "thank you" was dripping with sarcasm.

’She’s so smart, and she knows what kind of obstacles I face within the Lowell Group. She must have figured out this whole thing was just a stupid mistake.’

’Besides, after Jasper Sterling went to all that trouble, there’s no way he wouldn’t have run to her to take credit.’

’She must have known the truth all along and was just playing dumb. Wasn’t this her way of mocking him, her fiancé, for his incompetence?’
