Chapter 47: What does the Dragon want?
--Chapter 47--
Title>>What does the Dragon want?
Xavier’s attention shifted toward the entrance. His question had been answered and it definitely wasn’t Fiona.
Unlike him, the guards had already recognized who was approaching. Both of them straightened the moment Skylar came into view.
She manifested as a tiny, accelerated figure with a pixel-like shape before gradually taking full form.
Xavier first thought when he saw her was that she was a child.
No...even fairy children weren’t this small.
Maybe something had gone terribly wrong during her birth. Dwarfism? Was that even possible in this world?.
Xavier shook his head in sympathy at the thought.
Anyways. One thing was certain. She was still a fairy.
Her pale golden eyes told him so. Her delicate, fluttering wings and tiny feet certainly did as well. And the way she drifted effortlessly through the air was more than enough evidence.
But she wasn’t just any fairy. She was basically the other end of the extreme.
Fiona was the largest fairy he had ever seen. And now there was this fairy, the smallest he had ever seen.
Xavier didn’t want to linger on the thought any longer. So he decided to look away. Or at least tried to.
However before he could, Skylar had noticed him staring.
Her eyes narrowed at his attention. A small smile crept onto the corner of her tiny mouth as she adjusted herself in the air, deliberately posing like a model.
"You like what you see?" She teased, her voice so clear, it made no sense how it had came from something that small.
Xavier leaned back slightly at how straight forward and bold she was.
Honestly it was refreshing. Especially with how closed the others had been so far.
"Maybe?" Xavier teased back.
"You might get lucky..," the tiny fairy smirked. She wasn’t afraid of him. Not even a little.
Skylar looked him over once, circling around him, over and over again.
As if she were sizing him up, trying to determine whether the value Fiona had placed on him was actually justified.
’is she alright?’ Xavier thought but remained quiet. If she wanted something, she could say it herself.
Seeing that the dragon wasn’t willing to take the initiative after their little exchange, Skylar stopped and placed a hand against her chest.
"I’m Miss Skylar, by the way. Nice to meet you."
’She’s polite.’ the thought surfaced in Xavier’s mind before anything else.
With the tiny fairy willing to put herself out there, Xavier responded with courtesy or at least tried to.
"Okay. Skylar... Nice t.."
Xavier was mid answer when Skylar abruptly interrupted him.
"No, no, no." She waved her finger at him. "It’s Miss Skylar."
’Okay?’ Xavier tilted his head slightly. "Miss Skylar. Nice to meet you."
She smiled in satisfaction. Her small smile grew just a little wider by the passing second, then out of no where, it turned into a frown.
A sudden wave of unease sprung up between them as her eyes focused on him like beacons.
Xavier couldn’t understand where and why. He honestly thought they were getting along pretty well, so where was this coming from ?
His mind churned in the confusion for a moment until his eyes widened.
’Oh.’
She wanted his name too.
Ah, dumbass.
Xavier took a breath.
"Well, I’m Hunter," His mind spoke but his lips remained sealed.
Yeah...that would be stupid.
Calling himself Hunter while standing inside a fairy settlement as a dragon...
That was basically like the devil walking up to the Pope and saying, Hello, I’m Lucifer Morningstar. Nice to meet you.
Hell No. Xavier decided against it. He had to play his cards right. But what else could he call himself?
He had gone by Hunter X for so long that it was the only name that felt natural whenever he interacted with Arillion.
Finally, while keeping his face perfectly straight, Xavier opened his lips.
"I’m Xavier."
Skylar’s brows lifted at his words.it was the first time she’d ever heard a name like that.
"Xavier?"
"Yes."
He answered immediately, without the slightest hesitation.
Her ting eyes looked at him strangely. But Xavier did his best not to ask what exactly she found so strange about his name.
Apparently, even in a world filled with dragons, demons, and titans, Xavier was still a name unusual enough to make a fairy confused.
As if he’d just spoken a forbidden spell. The silence remained for a few more seconds until Skylar finally asked the question that apparently brought her here.
"Where did you learn to heal?" She began.
Xavier regarded her for a moment. "Magic academy."
Skylar’s pale golden eyes remained fixed on him. "Magic... academy?"
"Yeah, briefly," Xavier replied with a straight face. "Is there a problem?"
Xavier could almost see the question forming behind her eyes.
"What is a magic academy?" Skylar asked with genuine interest.
Xavier was almost taken aback if he didn’t figure it out. This place was concealed, of course, it’s inhabitants don’t know what a magic academy was.
"A place where people are trained to treat injuries and illnesses," Xavier added.
Skylar’s expression shifted slightly. Skylar has lived long enough that strange concepts don’t automatically sound impossible to her.
It wasn’t all that difficult for her to accept the possibility.
"So that’s where you learned?" She confirmed.
"Yeah."
Xavier nodded. His response were framed as truthful as possible.
The small fairy leaned back slightly, folding her arms as she continued to study him.
Xavier found himself mirroring her composure. She was no longer looking at him with simple curiosity. She was evaluating him.
More importantly, she was assessing whether his explanation aligned with what she had already observed.
"How good is your skill?" she said at last.
"Good enough..."
"Enough to look at Fiona and decide you could help her?" Her tone became sharper
The question made Xavier pause. It finally made sense. This was her concern from the beginning.
it was never about if he was trustworthy or his background.
It was always simply about Fiona.
He briefly glanced in the direction she had left before returning his attention to Skylar.
With things going even better than he hoped. Xavier made sure not to show any hint of hesitation.
"Yes," He replied.
Skylar’s brows lifted slightly. As her gaze swept over him again, this time with greater scrutiny.
Xavier understood the question she did not voice.
How?
He could have explained that he had seen enough injuries to recognize when something was wrong.
That his abilities provided insight beyond ordinary observation. That he had already detected the corruption spreading through Fiona’s wings.
But he chose not to. It was never a good idea to overplay your hand.
Moreover, if their conversation so far was anything to go by, Skylar wasn’t as timid as Fiona.
Miss Skylar rubbed her chin for a moment before eventually meeting his eyes again.
"Dragons are not typically healers though."
She wasn’t wrong, hence why the original owner of the Aspect was considered "Fallen’
"I’m not your typical dragon," he shrugged.
That earned the faintest twitch at the corner of her mouth. "Is that so?"
"Yeah... I offered to help, didn’t I?"
Skylar’s expression softened briefly. "And of course Fiona said no because she doesn’t like being helped."
"Obviously."
"You’ve known her for what—an hour?"
"Might be fate. Miss Skylar," Xavier playfully shook his head. "Might be fate...."
"Fate?" She repeated, seemingly amused by the notion.
"But why?!"
The question was expected. It made no sense for him to just decide to assist.
The reasons were pretty straight forward. She was injured and needed help. And that help could significantly ease his path toward Dragon Sovereign.
"Because she needs help"
Skylar frowned. But Xavier continued before she could interrupt.
"And I can provide it."
The small fairy remained silent. Xavier could almost feel her waiting for more.
She was probably waiting for his condition and demand. But none came from Xavier.
Eventually, Skylar tilted her head.
"That’s it?"
Xavier’s lips almost curved up.
"That’s all I said."
She studied him for another moment. Her expression blank but she was not convinced
That was good. Xavier would not have trusted her if she had just accepted.
Skylar’s fingers tapped lightly against her arm.
"You’re being cautious."
"Shouldn’t I be?"
"Probably."
She gave a small shrug. "Especially around Fiona."
Xavier’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Is that a threat?"
"No," Skylar smiled faintly. "Just saying..."
He studied her for a moment. She was more relaxed than Fiona, but no less perceptive.
If anything, she appeared comfortable allowing others to speak until they revealed more than intended.
’Do not underestimate the small ones.’ Xavier recalled an old saying.
Skylar’s smile widened slightly. "What?"
"Umm.. Nothing."
"Okay," Skylar’s smile finally disappeared. "What do you want?"
The question arrived without embellishment. Xavier’s expression remained composed.
Internally, his thoughts moved several steps ahead. He knew what he wanted.
It had been on his mind since he arrived here.
Of course he wanted the Territory and all that came with it. Then he can exit this place, conquer the world event and then find Grace.
But all of that was only possible if he chose his words well.
"I want to live ..."
Skylar stopped tapping her fingers immediately she heard that.
It was the first time in awhile she had no immediate response for something.
