Chapter 32: Jessica Sanders
“So where did Kaela run off to?” John asked as they walked along one of the corridors.
“You noticed that, huh?” Sarah asked with a chuckle. “She gets bored listening to all the technical stuff about Genesis; I guess it comes from her not being able to play.”
John looked around before asking, “Why is this place so empty? Is it because we're in the inner palace?”
“That’s right. Only certain individuals are authorised to enter the inner palace as a security measure.”
It didn’t take the pair long to return to the wall separating the inner and outer palace. Sarah used her magic to activate the passage before taking John's hand and leading him through. Sarah released his hand and began to lead the way back towards the entrance while curiously asking, “Did you feel the magic and see the root again?”
“I did, and stronger this time,” John nodded.
“It must have been because I was holding your hand this time,” Sarah explained.
As the pair walked, John couldn’t help but glance at Sarah from time to time. “Can I ask you something?”
“Always.”
“Why did you pick the sorcerer class and specifically focus on frost magic?”
Sarah was silent for a moment before showing him a playful smile. “And here I was hoping you’d ask me out on a date.”
“I’m not that brave,” John chuckled. “Besides, are you ready to date again after what happened with your ex? I’m sure many women would lose faith in men for a while after that.”
“I already had my suspicions it was happening for a while, and not only with Stacey Anderson, so while it did upset and hurt me, I’ll eventually get over it,” Sarah explained before jokingly saying. “Besides, I’m used to having my relationships end badly. It’s happened so many times now that I think I’m becoming immune to it.”
John studied Sarah for a few moments and really didn’t see any pain or suffering in her eyes. He sighed before saying, “I’m not sure that’s something you should sound so proud about.”
“Oh, I’m not; I just don’t want you thinking I’m all heartbroken over that snake,” Sarah replied.
John nodded and said, “As someone who hasn’t ever been in a relationship, I’m in no position to judge.”
“That’s nothing bad,” Sarah replied. “There are many people who have always been single, Adria for example.”
“She’s the princess; is she even allowed to date?” John asked.
“Technically, though it is frowned upon and if she ever were to date someone, the eyes of the world would be on her,” Sarah replied before laughing and saying. “Such is the life of an impossible princess.”
John raised an eyebrow before repeating, “Impossible princess?”
“You haven’t heard of them?” Sarah asked in surprise as they left the palace and descended the steps towards the same car that they had arrived in, though the other three had disappeared.
Seeing John shake his head, Sarah smiled before saying, “Interesting.”
{How is it he doesn’t know about the impossible princesses? Even if he showed no interest in Genesis before we met, he should still know about them. They've been all over the web and mentioned multiple times on different news networks.}
“Is that all you're going to say?” John asked as the pair climbed into the back seat of one of the cars, which departed a moment later.

“Yeah, I think so, at least for now,” Sarah teased, causing John to sigh before saying, “So your class?”
“Right,” Sarah replied before continuing. “I went sorcerer because I wanted to play a magic damage dealer. The first class the other races think of when you say human caster to them is Necromancer since it's our race-exclusive class and it is incredibly popular. I mean, the necromancy guild is the biggest guild in the human race.
Warlocks are exclusive to Orcs and clerics are a healing class, so that left me with sorcerer. Though honestly, the main reason I chose sorcerer and also focused on frost is that I love winter or more specifically, snow.
As a frost mage, many of my attacks have a snow effect and at the higher levels I can even learn the blizzard spell.
I have a lot of fun memories from my childhood, playing in the snow.”
After she finished speaking, Sarah went quiet and looked out of the window. John could see that she was lost in thought, so he decided not to disturb her and instead turned to look out his own window.
The car quickly reached the bottom of the hill and once it had passed through the checkpoints again without stopping, it turned and carried on further into the city.
This was part of the city that John hadn’t seen before and he was surprised to find that after a few seconds the car crossed over a bridge, reaching the other side of a river before it began to travel along a road that ran parallel with the river. He had learned in school that the Palace of Golden Dawn was perched atop a hill with a waterfall, overlooking a city; however, he had never heard about a river running through the city, so he supposed it made sense.
Many boats of various sizes travelled along the river and once John even spotted a windmill at the river's edge.
As he turned his head and looked out the windscreen, he saw that the car was heading in the direction of one of the few skyscrapers of the city, which stood alongside the river.
“Is that where we’re going?” John couldn’t help but ask with a hopeful tone in his voice.
Sarah looked ahead before turning to him with a smile and saying, " Yup, that’s Eclipse Views. It has one of the best views of the city, including the river and the palace atop the hill; you’ll love it.”
“Why does it sound like you know that from experience?” John asked suspiciously.
“Does it?” Sarah asked innocently. “I wonder why.”
John continued to stare at her before he asked in a flat tone, “You live there, don’t you?”
The female security guard, who seemed to be the head of the security detail and was sitting in the passenger seat, chuckled before saying, “Busted.”
“I don’t want to hear that from you, Jessica,” Sarah pouted as she glared at the female bodyguard in the passenger seat. Jessica, however, just chuckled in response.
Sarah continued to glare for a second before turning to John and saying, “I don’t think I’ve introduced you two. John, meet Jessica Snaders; she’s my head bodyguard while I’m in the capital. Jessica, meet John Michaels.”
“Nice to meet you, John,” Jessica said with a smile.
“Likewise, Jessica,” John replied before asking. “You only protect Sarah when she’s here in the capital?”
“Unfortunately so,” Jessica nodded. “I have some personal reasons as to why I can’t travel with Miss Lapis.”
“Geez, Jessica, John’s a friend, so there's no need to be so formal,” Sarah complained.
“As you wish, Sarah,” Jessica smiled.
“Then what about when you leave the city?” John asked. “I noticed you didn’t have a bodyguard when you came to visit me.”
“I did actually,” Jessica replied. “My former assistant Shane was also my personal bodyguard.”
“Finally got rid of that guy, huh? I told you he was bad news, always looking at you with lustful eyes,” Jessica commented with a look of disgust in her eyes.
“I know,” Sarah sighed. “I just hadn’t found the time to find a replacement with everything that has been going on lately, though I guess I will be forced to do that now. Thankfully, I doubt I will be leaving the capital anytime soon.”
“Well, that’s a relief; I never trusted that guy,” Jessica nodded. “At least you'll have time to visit and hang out with your friends if you're staying in the capital for a while.”
“True,” Sarah nodded. “But I still have to look after John; I’m his chaperone after all.”
“His chaperone?” Jessica repeated in surprise as she took another look at John, a far more interested one.
“Look, we’re here,” Sarah said as the car pulled off the road and descended into an underground parking lot that was illuminated with light strips that ran along the roof and walls, as well as up the support pillars.
John didn’t know much about cars, but even he could tell that the cars in the parking lot were not the kind you would see every day on the street.
“Impressed?” Jessica asked as she noticed him staring at the cars.
“Not really,” John replied, surprising her. “I mean, I can tell they're expensive, and they look nice, but that’s about it.”
“Really?” Jessica responded as the car pulled up near an elevator and the three got out. “You're one curious individual, John. I can tell you're not like Sarah’s other friends.”
“Did the clothes and hair give it away?” John asked with a chuckle.
“You do really need a haircut,” Sarah added with a chuckle.
