Chapter 286: The Earth Trial
The word remained on the surface of the Earth Mirror.
Foundation.
Arthur stared at it. He had expected something else. A command. A question. Perhaps another test. Instead, there was only that single word.
Then the Mirror changed. The stone surface rippled, and Arthur took one step backward. "Everyone—"
The golden light erupted. For an instant, the entire arena disappeared. Arthur reached for Dusk, but his hand closed around nothing.
The others were gone. Vedas. Mithra. Melo. Athy. Kong. Sun. Eden. Star.
Arthur’s expression hardened. "Everyone?"
There was no answer. The arena had vanished too, and Arthur stood alone in an endless white space.
Then something appeared in front of him. A road. Arthur recognized it immediately. The Chief’s Road. Except there was no one walking along it. No Vedas. No Athena. No Luna. No companions. Only Arthur.
He looked down the road. A body lay in the distance. Then another. And another.
Arthur’s breathing slowed. He walked forward, and the bodies became clearer.
Vedas. Mithra. Melo. Athy. Kong. Sun. Eden. Star.
They were all dead.
Arthur stopped. A figure stood beside them. It was him, older, stronger, his body covered in golden light, the pressure surrounding him so immense that the ground beneath his feet had cracked. He had become powerful, far more powerful than the Arthur standing in the vision. But he was alone.
The older Arthur looked at the corpses without emotion. Then he continued walking.
Arthur stared after him.
The scene changed. He was standing in a massive throne room, golden statues lining the walls, Beasts filling the enormous hall. Vedas stood among them.
But something was wrong. The Goblin King’s head was lowered, his expression empty. Arthur sat upon a throne above him.
"Obey."
Vedas immediately moved. There was no hesitation. No smile. No argument. No bond. Only obedience.
Arthur’s expression tightened.
The vision shifted again. Mithra appeared beside him. Then she disappeared. Athy appeared. Then disappeared. Sun. Gone. Kong. Gone. Eden. Gone.
One after another, Arthur abandoned them. Every time someone became weaker than he was, they were left behind. The final version of Arthur stood alone at the end of an enormous road. He didn’t even look back.
Another vision appeared. The Mirrors. Five of them. Arthur stood before them, and the entire world had disappeared around him. Cities. People. Beasts. Friends. Nothing mattered. Only the Mirrors. He reached toward them.
The vision changed one final time. Arthur stood at the center of an enormous city, his power overwhelming, the five Mirrors floating behind him. Yet when he turned around, there was no one there.
No Vedas. No Mithra. No Melo. No Athy. No Kong. No Sun. No Eden. No Star. Not even the people he had met along the way. Everyone had become a stranger.
Arthur stood alone.
The Earth Mirror appeared before him, its surface reflecting his face. Then words appeared.
"What is your foundation?"
Arthur stared at the question.
Power? He could have said that. His strength had carried him through countless battles. The King Mark. His evolution. The Mirrors. All of it had made him stronger. But power wasn’t the answer.
The King? No. The King Mark was something he wielded. The Mirrors? They were something he sought. Evolution? That was the path he walked. None of them explained why he continued walking.
Arthur looked at the empty world around him. Then he thought about Vedas, the Goblin who had been with him from the beginning. He thought about Star throwing itself between him and danger. Eden smiling whenever she accomplished something. Mithra laughing during battle. Melo teasing him. Athy watching from above. Kong charging headfirst into everything. Sun complaining while still following him.
They weren’t things Arthur had accumulated. They were people who had walked beside him.
Arthur looked at the Mirror. "My friends."
The words were quiet. But the entire space trembled.
The Earth Mirror brightened. The visions shattered, the throne, the dead Beasts, the empty city, the lonely Arthur, everything collapsing into fragments of golden light.
Then the arena returned. Arthur stood in the center. And everyone was there.
Vedas looked at him. "Arthur?"
Arthur looked around. His companions were confused. None of them seemed to know what had happened.
Before Arthur could answer, the Earth Mirror moved. The enormous surface split open, and the ground beneath them trembled.
The trial had begun.
...
The first Chief Beast emerged. Then another. Then another. The arena rapidly transformed into the ancient underground city, the walls becoming the ruins they had crossed, the ground becoming the Chief’s Road.
Ancient guardians appeared among the ruins. Mirror Hunters emerged from the darkness. Purple corruption spread across the stone. For an instant, Arthur saw the massacre. He saw the ancient city before it had fallen. He saw the Guardians moving toward the Earth Mirror. He saw the corruption consuming everything.
Then the five Mirrors appeared. The entire history of the Everglades unfolded around them.
Arthur gripped Dusk. "So this is the trial."
A Chief Beast charged. Arthur raised his hand.
[King’s Mark Authority — Piercing Light]
A concentrated beam of golden light erupted forward, punching through the Chief’s defenses and sending the Beast crashing backward.
Another enemy attacked from behind. Mithra was already there, her blades flashing across its blind spot.
"You’re welcome."
Arthur smiled. "Thanks."
The sky above them darkened. Athy rose into the air, golden light spreading from her wings as she tracked the enemies below. "Three on your right!"
Arthur turned. Kong smashed through the first. Sun’s staff struck the ground and shattered the terrain beneath the second. Melo’s dream mist spread across the battlefield, and the remaining enemies staggered, their movements confused. Vedas charged through them, his golden spear tearing across the battlefield.
The trial changed again. More Chiefs appeared, this time from every direction. Arthur raised both hands.
[King’s Mark Authority — Columns of Light]
Golden pillars erupted throughout the arena. They separated the enemies. Created openings. Blocked attacks. Changed the battlefield.
But this time, Arthur didn’t fight alone. Mithra moved through the gaps he created. Athy directed the battlefield from above. Kong smashed through the defensive lines. Sun destroyed the ground beneath groups of enemies. Melo continued suppressing their senses. Eden shared her vision with everyone. Vedas fought directly beside Arthur. Star bounced forward.
Arthur barely noticed the attack coming from behind. A massive claw swept toward him.
"Arthur!"
Star launched itself forward. The small slime collided with the attack, and the blow sent it flying.
Arthur’s eyes widened. "Star!" He caught the slime before it hit the ground. Star shook violently.
Arthur looked at it. Then at the enemy. Something clicked.
The Earth Mirror wasn’t simply showing him that his friends were his foundation. It was showing him something deeper. A foundation wasn’t only something that supported you. It was something you supported in return. Arthur had spent the entire journey becoming stronger so he could protect the people beside him. But somewhere along the way, they had become part of that strength. He wasn’t standing above them. He was standing with them.
Arthur looked around the arena. Vedas was fighting. Mithra was fighting. Melo was fighting. Athy was fighting. Kong was fighting. Sun was fighting. Eden was fighting. Even Star, despite being thrown across the arena, was already bouncing back toward him.
Arthur smiled. "The answer wasn’t just that you’re my foundation."
Golden light began spreading from his King Mark.
"It goes both ways."
The light expanded. Vedas looked toward him. Then Mithra. Then everyone else.
Arthur raised his hand.
[King’s Mark Authority — Light Aura]
Golden light enveloped the entire arena. The power didn’t remain around Arthur. It spread through everyone.
Vedas’s spear became brighter. Mithra’s movements accelerated. Athy’s vision sharpened. Kong’s body became heavier. Sun’s staff radiated power. Melo’s dream mist expanded. Eden’s shared vision reached farther. Star’s body shimmered with golden light.
The entire battlefield became connected. Arthur could feel them. Not their thoughts. Not their individual abilities. Their presence. Their trust. Their willingness to stand beside him.
The enemies charged. The group met them together. Vedas drove his spear through the first. Mithra passed through his blind spot. Kong shattered another defense. Sun destroyed the ground beneath a group of enemies. Melo suppressed their senses. Athy guided everyone from above. Eden shared the battlefield. Star protected Arthur.
And Arthur stood at the center.
The golden light grew brighter. The final Chief Beast shattered. The corruption disappeared. The ancient Guardians vanished. The Mirror Hunters dissolved. The massacre faded. The ancient city returned to silence.
...
Arthur stood in the center of the arena with his companions around him. The Earth Mirror began to rise, stone cracking beneath its base as ancient mechanisms throughout the underground city activated one after another. Golden lines spread through the walls. Then through the roads. Then through the entire subterranean network.
The Earth Mirror rose higher. Higher. Until its full surface towered over them.
Arthur looked up. The Mirror reflected everyone standing together. Not Arthur alone. All of them.
The ancient mechanisms continued activating. The entire Everglades secret realm trembled. Above them, distant mountains shifted. Underground rivers changed course. Ancient ruins awakened. Roads that had been buried for centuries began glowing beneath the earth.
Then the notification appeared.
[Earth Mirror Recognition Confirmed.]
Another followed.
[Earth Mirror Trial Completed.]
Arthur stared. The final line appeared.
[Earth Mirror Acquired.]
The Mirror’s surface changed. Arthur felt something connect to his King Mark, and information flowed into his mind. Not power. Knowledge.
The Earth Mirror was responding to him. He could feel ancient mechanisms beneath the earth. Sealed pathways. Hidden structures. Buried chambers. Ancient records. Systems that had remained dormant for centuries. He could interact with them. Open them. Sense them.
The Earth Mirror wasn’t simply another weapon. It was a key. A connection to the civilization that had built the Mirrors.
Arthur looked at the enormous object. "So that’s what you are."
Athena stared at the Mirror. "It’s not just a relic."
Arthur nodded. "It’s part of the system they built."
Then the Earth Mirror began shining. Arthur’s expression changed. "Wait."
The light intensified. Something was happening behind them. A deep vibration moved through the chamber, and Luna turned around, her eyes widening.
The Earth Mirror’s light shot upward. Then something answered. Far above them, another light appeared. Then another. Then another.
The other Mirrors were responding. The Fire Mirror. The Water Mirror. And the Mirror Luna had carried with her from the beginning. Their distant locations no longer seemed to matter. One by one, their images appeared in the air around the Earth Mirror.
Luna stared. "That’s..."
The Mirrors rose. They began circling the group, golden, blue, red, and the strange light of Luna’s Mirror intertwining as they moved around the arena.
Arthur watched them carefully. "Luna..." He turned toward her. "Do you know—"
"No." She shook her head, her expression filled with genuine confusion. "This is new for me."
Arthur looked back toward the Mirrors. For once, he had no idea what was happening. He chuckled quietly. "Of course it is."
The Mirrors suddenly stopped. Their lights converged, and a single brilliant line formed between them.
Arthur’s eyes widened. "Everyone, stay together!"
The light swallowed the arena. The ancient city disappeared. The Earth Mirror disappeared. The entire cavern vanished beneath a flood of white-gold light.
Arthur felt something pull against his body. He reached out. His hand found Vedas. Then another hand grabbed his arm. Then another. Everyone held onto someone.
The light became brighter.
And then—
They vanished.
