So I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?! — Infinite Evolution

Chapter 19: The Watcher

The twisted trees parted to reveal a clearing that shouldn't have existed. The ground was bare stone, polished smooth as glass, reflecting the faint glow of Caelan's Bioluminescence like a dark mirror. At the center, alone and utterly still, stood the creature that had been watching him.

It was small. That was the first surprise. Barely larger than a kobold, humanoid in shape but wrong in proportion—arms too long, legs too short, head too large for its slender frame. Its skin was pale gray, stretched tight over bones that seemed to shift beneath the surface. Its eyes were the color of old bruises, purple and black and depthless.

It didn't attack. It didn't flee. It just watched.

"You're different," Caelan said.

The creature tilted its head. A crack opened in its face—not a mouth, not exactly, but a seam that parted to reveal darkness within. When it spoke, the voice came from everywhere at once.

"Different. Yes. You think. You plan. You are not like the others."

The words arrived directly in Caelan's consciousness, bypassing his vibration sense entirely. Telepathy. A skill he hadn't encountered before. He filed it away as something to absorb if he survived the next five minutes.

"You've been following me since the Wraith."

"Since the ravine. Since the serpent. Since you spoke to the prisoner in the dark." The creature's bruise-colored eyes blinked sideways. "He is old. Older than me. Older than the trees. But you—you are new. New and hungry. I wished to see what you would become."

"And what do you think I'll become?"

The creature was silent for a long moment. Then its seam-mouth curved into something that might have been a smile.

"Either a savior or a catastrophe. The prisoner hopes for the first. The dragon dreams of the second. I am merely curious which will win."

Caelan's membrane tightened. "You know about the dragon."

"Everything in the Deep Thicket knows about the dragon. We feel its dreams. We taste its hunger. We have been waiting for someone to wake it or put it back to sleep. You are the first candidate in four thousand years." The creature's head tilted the other way. "I am not your enemy, little slime. I am a collector of moments. The fight with the Howler was magnificent. I wished to preserve it."

"Preserve it how?"

The creature raised one too-long arm. Its four-fingered hand opened, and in its palm, a sphere of pale light flickered to life. Inside the sphere, Caelan saw himself—a tiny blue slime lunging at the Terror Howler's throat, frozen in mid-strike like an insect in amber.

"I collect significant events," the creature said. "Battles. Deaths. Evolutions. The fall of civilizations. The rise of new ones. I have been collecting for a very long time. You would call me an archivist. My people called me something else, but they are gone now."

Caelan studied the sphere. The image of his battle with the Howler was perfect—every detail preserved, every moment captured. "Why show me this?"

"Because you are about to make a choice. The fragments you carry—they will soon be complete. When they are, you will evolve. What you become depends on what you choose to value. Power? Protection? Knowledge? Hunger?" The creature's seam-mouth widened. "I can show you what each path leads to. I have collected them all. Every evolution. Every ending. Would you like to see?"

Caelan's strategist mind raced. This creature was offering him something unprecedented: a glimpse of his possible futures. No more guessing. No more unknowns. He could see exactly what each evolution path would make him.

But knowledge had a price. Everything in the Deep Thicket had a price.

"What do you want in exchange?"

"A moment. Yours. The moment of your first evolution. I wish to collect it. To preserve it. It will be significant, regardless of which path you choose."

"You want to watch me evolve and keep the memory?"

"Yes. Nothing more. Nothing less."

Caelan considered the offer. A moment of vulnerability in exchange for knowledge that could save his life—and the lives of everyone he'd sworn to protect. The strategist in him saw the value immediately. The skeptic in him wondered what else the creature might take while he was exposed.

"One condition," he said. "You don't interfere. No matter what path I choose. No matter what I become. You watch, you collect, you leave."

"Agreed." The creature's seam-mouth curved again. "Then look, little slime. Look and choose."

The sphere in its palm expanded, and Caelan saw.

---

The images flooded his consciousness like the Howler's howl had—but these weren't fears. These were truths. Possible futures branching from the choices he would make.

The Acid Slime path: Caelan saw himself grown large and corrosive, his body a weapon that dissolved everything it touched. He saw enemies fleeing before him. He saw the rival in the deep places, melting beneath a tide of acid. But he also saw the village. The kobolds couldn't touch him without being burned. Rask stood at a distance, counting the days since they'd last spoken. The spiral on the war-room table had faded to nothing.

The Chitin Slime path: Armored. Impenetrable. A walking fortress that no predator could wound. He saw himself standing between the village and an army of monsters, unbreakable, eternal. But he also saw himself growing slow. Rigid. Unable to ooze through the spaces that made him unpredictable. The Shadow's children came in waves, and he couldn't stop them all.

The Predator Slime path: He saw himself hunting the rival through the Deep Thicket, Predator's Presence fully realized, Terror Roar scattering enemies before him. He was powerful. Feared. Alone. The village had become a hunting ground, not a home. Rask's yellow eyes watched him from the shadows, counting his steps. Waiting for the moment he became the thing they'd fought.

And then, finally, the Unknown path.

The vision was fragmented. Unclear. Caelan saw himself changing, but not into something the System had categorized. His membrane shifted through colors he had no names for. His skills wove together into combinations that didn't exist yet. He saw Rask standing beside him, not at a distance. He saw the village growing—not just surviving, but thriving. He saw the dragon, still sleeping, and the rival, still dangerous, but he wasn't facing them alone.

And beneath it all, he saw the hunger. Not defeated. Not silenced. But held. Balanced. A fire that warmed instead of burned.

The vision ended. The sphere contracted back into the creature's palm.

"Interesting," it said. "The Unknown path has never been chosen before. You would be the first."

"The first?"

"Every previous bearer chose power. Acid. Armor. Predation. They consumed until there was nothing left but the hunger. None of them chose to remain themselves." The creature's bruise-colored eyes met his. "Perhaps that is why none of them survived."

Caelan sat in silence, processing what he'd seen. The choice was clear now. It had always been clear.

"Collect your moment," he said. "I've made my decision."

Author's Note

The Watcher. An archivist who collects significant moments and preserves them in spheres of light. It showed Caelan every possible future—and confirmed what we've suspected all along. The Unknown path is the only one that lets him stay himself. It's also the one no previous bearer ever chose.

That says something, doesn't it? About Caelan. About what makes him different.

Also: the Watcher will return. I didn't introduce a millennia-old collector of pivotal events just for one scene. It's going to be very interested in what Caelan becomes.
