So I Got Reincarnated as a Slime?! — Infinite Evolution

Chapter 17: The Deep Thicket

Three days after the feast, Caelan left the village at dawn.

His fragments hung in the back of his mind like unfinished equations—Predator's Presence at twenty-three percent, Bone Armor at eighteen, Shadow Step and Terror Roar barely started. To unlock the Unknown path, he needed them all. And to complete them, he needed to hunt.

The Deep Thicket waited beyond the eastern ravine, where the iron-bark trees grew so thick that daylight never touched the forest floor. Grath had warned him about the place. "That's where old things live. Things that don't like light or company."

Perfect, Caelan had thought. Old things have old skills.

He crossed the ravine before the mist burned off, avoiding the tunnel that led to Soryn's prison. The scholar had given him enough to think about. Today was about action.

The Deep Thicket announced itself with silence. No birds. No insects. The air hung still and heavy, thick with the smell of wet earth and something sharper beneath it—musk, maybe, or old blood. Caelan dimmed his Bioluminescence and activated Chitinous Armor, drawing the chitin particles tight across his membrane.

System, he thought. What creatures in this area could complete my Predator's Presence fragment?

[Analyzing local mana signatures. Three candidates detected. Nearest: Stalker Wraith. Estimated distance: two hundred yards east. Threat level: Moderate. Compatible skill: Predator's Presence (matches 78% of fragment requirements).]

Stalker Wraith. What is it?

[Insufficient data. Classification suggests ambush predator with stealth capabilities. Approach with caution.]

When do I ever not?

The System didn't dignify that with a response.

---

Caelan found the Stalker Wraith exactly where the System had indicated—coiled around a dead iron-bark like smoke given flesh. It was feline in shape but wrong, its body semi-transparent, its edges blurring into the darkness. Two eyes burned in the center of its mass, pale green and lidless. It hadn't noticed him yet.

Ambush predator, Caelan reminded himself. It waits for prey to come close. I can use that.

He studied the terrain. The iron-bark's roots created natural channels in the earth, little valleys of decay where leaves had piled up over centuries. If he could draw the Wraith into one of those channels, its semi-corporeal form would have fewer escape routes. The channels also meant limited sightlines, which favored the prey, not the predator.

He oozed into position and flickered his Bioluminescence. Once. Twice. A wounded insect's distress signal.

The Wraith moved.

It didn't run. It flowed—pouring down the iron-bark like liquid shadow, silent and impossibly fast. Caelan barely had time to retreat into the root channel before the creature was on him, green eyes blazing, spectral claws raking through the air where he'd been a second before.

Fast, he noted. But predictable. It leads with claws, not strategy.

He let it come. The channel narrowed, forcing the Wraith to compress its form. For a creature that relied on mobility, compression was vulnerability. When it was close enough that he could feel the cold radiating from its body, Caelan struck.

Mandible Bite punched through the Wraith's lower mass. The creature shrieked—a sound like tearing silk—and tried to dissolve backward. Caelan didn't let it. He pressed forward, Absorption active, pulling the Wraith's essence into himself piece by piece.

[Biomass acquired. 8 units.]

[Skill fragment progress: Predator's Presence. 23% → 78%.]

[Warning: Target's essence contains unstable mana. Absorption may cause temporary sensory distortion.]

Define sensory distortion.

The world went white.

---

When Caelan's senses returned, the Wraith was gone. Fully absorbed. The root channel was empty. But something had changed.

He could feel the forest differently now. Not through vibration. Not through smell. Something deeper. A pressure in the air, a weight to the shadows, a sense that he was not alone in ways that had nothing to do with proximity.

This is what the Shadow felt, he realized. The presence of other predators. The boundaries of their territory. The places they wouldn't go.

Predator's Presence wasn't a weapon. It was a map. A map of fear, drawn across the Deep Thicket like invisible ink. And now Caelan could read it.

He focused, letting the new sense guide him. There—to the north—a void where even the insects wouldn't go. Something old. Something powerful. The rival Soryn had warned him about? Maybe. But not today. Today he had a fragment to complete and a village to return to.

The Wraith's essence had pushed Predator's Presence to seventy-eight percent. He needed another predator. Something that hunted with terror as much as claws.

System. Next target?

[Terror Howler. Estimated distance: four hundred yards north. Threat level: High. Compatible skill: Terror Roar (matches 64% of fragment requirements).]

High threat level.

[Correct.]

Caelan pulsed his Bioluminescence once. "Good."

He oozed north, into the dark.

Author's Note

One fragment nearly complete, and Caelan just unlocked Predator's Presence—a sensory ability that lets him feel the fear-map of the entire Deep Thicket. Handy for avoiding danger. Also handy for finding it.

Next up: the Terror Howler. Threat level: High. Fragment progress: pending. Caelan is about to learn what happens when you hunt something that specializes in psychological warfare.
