Chronicles Of The Crafting Hero [REMASTERED]

Chapter 64: A promising Reunion

Kai had meticulously scraped the tip of a small chunk of charcoal against the rough stone until it was sharp and pointed, mimicking the fine edge of a pencil. Having found a discarded scrap of parchment, he had settled into his usual routine to pass the hours whenever a quiet moment allowed. He sat flat in the dirt of the narrow alleyway, his eyes narrowing to slits as his entire focus locked onto the page.

With light, careful strokes, he worked on the portrait of a woman, one whose striking features had captivated him. His charcoal traced the sweeping length of her hair, the sharp contour of her jawline, and the cold, demanding intensity of her gaze. He carefully defined the subtle curves of her small nose and eyes, capturing her exact expression on the coarse surface.

Pausing to inspect the fine strands of hair he had just rendered, Kai leaned down and briefly rubbed the charcoal against a cobblestone on the ground to maintain its point. But the instant the dark tip touched the parchment again, a heavy shadow fell across his lap, blotting out the daylight.

"Hey," a voice called out.

Kai’s head snapped upward in sudden fear, his eyes flaring wide. He froze, completely startled to find Tyler standing directly over him.

"Tyler?" he stammered, his breath catching.

Tyler tilted his head, his gaze dropping as he tried to decipher the markings on the ground. "What are you drawing?"

Kai instantly snatched the parchment off the dirt, flipping it face down against the ground. "It's nothing," he muttered, dropping his chin until his frayed hair fell forward to completely obscure his eyebrows. He stared fixedly at the ground. "I didn't think you'd come back."

"Well, I said I would, didn't I?" Tyler replied. "I told you I wanted to pay back my debt."

Kai pushed himself up from the ground with a low groan, his frail joints aching. He shook his head slowly. "You don't have to repay me for anything. You already helped me by giving me that coin. I managed to buy some food."

Tyler looked down at the boy. Kai appeared incredibly thin, his ribs showing through his rags, his frame completely malnourished. Tyler’s brow furrowed into a deep frown, and he let out a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry I didn't come back for a while. A lot of things came up."

Kai blinked, staring in sheer surprise. "Why are you apologizing?"

"You're right," Tyler said, a small, quiet smile returning to his face. "It's not like it's going to fix anything anyway." He paused, his eyes scanning the boy's tattered state. "How long have you been wearing those clothes?"

Kai caught the smile, his gaze dropping down to his own bare, dirt-caked feet in deep embarrassment. "I've been wearing them for a long time. Why do you ask?"

Tyler took a deliberate step closer. Instinctively, Kai’s muscles tensed, and he took a sharp step backward to maintain his distance. "What are you doing?"

Tyler's frown returned. *Why does he look so scared today? What's going on? It's almost as if he's completely on guard.* "What's wrong?" Tyler asked.

Kai’s hand flew to his own wrist, gripping it tightly as his shoulders slouched. "Nothing. It's just... the guards warned me to stop bothering people. If they see you hanging around with me, they might beat me up again."

"Beat you up?" Tyler's voice hitched in surprise.

"Yeah. So I have to go now." Kai shifted his weight, turning his body to head deeper into the dark alleyway.

"Wait," Tyler said, throwing his left hand out to halt him. He walked directly toward the boy, closing the gap. "What are you doing? I told you I'd help you, wouldn't I?"

Kai froze, looking back. "You were serious?"

"Of course I was. You saved my life. You think I'd joke about something like that?"

Kai stopped completely, his eyes locked onto Tyler's face, registering the absolute, unyielding determination in his expression.

"Listen, I need you to keep a secret, all right?" Tyler said.

"A secret?"

Tyler extended his left palm into the open air. In a sudden flash of light, a pair of brown leggings and a crisp black tunic materialized, neatly folded on top of his hand.

Kai’s jaw dropped. Stunned, he scrambled backward in a panic. His heel caught the edge of a raised cobblestone, and he lost his balance, tumbling heavily onto the dirt ground. "What the—?"

"Don't worry," Tyler said quickly, holding his position. "It's just my skill." He reached out, holding the garments toward the fallen boy. "Here. I brought you these clothes."

Kai stared up from the ground, his chest heaving. "Clothes?"

Tyler stepped forward slowly, lowering the fabric directly into Kai’s trembling hands. Kai instinctively grasped them, looking up into Tyler's face. "For me?"

"Yeah, they're for you," Tyler said.

Inwardly, he thought: *They were initially for me, but they should be the right size. I have plenty of them in my inventory.*

Kai slowly pushed himself up off the ground, leaving the parchment abandoned face down on the dirt. He looked down at the leggings in his hands. The fabric was fresh, newly and immaculately knitted without a single blemish, radiating the clean smell of brand-new cloth. "I'm sorry, but... but I can't accept this. This is just too much," Kai muttered, shaking his head as he tried to push the bundle back into Tyler's chest.

"Don't worry about it."

"No!" Kai said, his voice cracking, much louder this time.

"Why not?" Tyler asked.

"You don't understand! If the guards see me wearing something like this, they're going to think I stole it. I'm going to get beaten up, or worse, they'll throw me directly into a dungeon. I can't... I can't risk any of this. Please... take it back." He thrust the clothes firmly back into Tyler's hands.

Tyler blinked in surprise at the sheer intensity of the refusal. He looked into Kai's face and saw that he was entirely serious, his intense crimson eyes staring unblinkingly into his own.

"I'm sorry, Kai, but I won't," Tyler said, his voice hardening into a stern tone.

"But I'm not wearing them! I already told you what will happen—"

"Listen," Tyler interjected, cutting him off cleanly. "You don't even have to live on these streets anymore. I told you I'm going to change that, didn't I?"

Kai’s breath hitched. "But... how?"

"Isn't it obvious? With money."

Kai’s brow furrowed deep as he stared at Tyler. The memory flashed in his mind, the last time they met, Tyler only had a single coin to his name and he could only give him one silver. But standing here now, Tyler seemed like a completely different person. It wasn't just the stark, confident shift in his posture; it was the way he carried himself in his new attire. It wasn't remarkably expensive clothing, but it was vastly superior to his previous ones. His physical build looked sharper, his shoulders broader, his muscles tightly defined and full of quiet confidence.

"But where are you going to get enough money to even do that?" Kai asked.

"Don't worry about it." Tyler smiled. Reaching down, he hooked the chain around his collar and pulled out a gleaming black D-rank pendant. "See? I'm a hunter."

Kai’s eyes flared with sudden shock. "A hunter? You're a D-Rank assassin?"

"I am," Tyler said, his chin lifting with absolute confidence. "A D-Rank plus, even. So you don't have to worry about money."

"Even so..." Kai murmured, his gaze falling back to the garments.

"You worry too much," Tyler sighed, a trace of mild frustration clipping his tone. "Look, I understand what you're saying." Tyler's eyes drifted down to the parchment lying flat on the dirt. "Why don't you sleep at an inn instead of out here? You won't have any problems with the guards there, right?"

Kai gasped, his head snapping up. "Sleep at an inn?"

Tyler groaned. "Yeah," he muttered, bending down to slide his fingers under the scrap of paper.

Kai’s eyes widened in a panic. His hands snapped out to wrench the parchment away, but Tyler’s reflexes were vastly superior. Tyler shifted his weight, smoothly stepping back out of reach before Kai's fingers could connect.

"Whoa, what's wrong? Why won't you let me see this thing?" Tyler asked, holding the page up to the light. His eyebrows shot up as he took in the detailed charcoal portrait. "Wow... you drew this?"

"Yeah, but give it back," Kai pleaded, lunging slightly to grab it.

Tyler stepped back another foot, keeping the page raised. "Hold on a second. This is actually pretty good." He paused, his eyes narrowing to a slit as he studied the sharp lines of the jaw and the demanding gaze. Recognition hit him like a physical blow. "But wait..."

While Tyler stood frozen in distraction, Kai lunged forward, cleanly snapping the paper right out of his grip. "Give it back. There aren't that many clean papers around here."

"That girl you just drew," Tyler said, his voice dropping as he stared at the boy. "Do you know her?"

Kai clutched the parchment to his chest, noting the intense curiosity burning in Tyler's face. "Yeah. I met her in the marketplace. She gave me a few coins."

"Did she happen to have silver hair and silver eyes?"

Kai gasped, his chest tightening. "How did you know that?"

Tyler’s face immediately darkened, a heavy, displeased scowl twisting his features. "I know her. She's a hunter, isn't she?"

"She is," Kai nodded softly.

"Did you meet her at the hunter base?"

Tyler paused, a bitter realization settling in. "Yeah," he muttered under his breath.

Kai watched him closely for a long moment, picking up on the sudden shift in atmosphere. "You don't get along with her, do you?"

"I don't," Tyler breathed, his jaw tightening. He shook his head to clear the thought, his eyes returning to Kai. "But still... that is a remarkably good drawing." A wide, sudden smile illuminated Tyler's face as a brilliant idea struck him. He glanced around the narrow stone corridor. "Is there a secluded place around here where you can change your clothes?"

"I told you, I'm not wearing them," Kai insisted.

"Please, trust me," Tyler said, his tone softening as he held the boy's gaze. "Just wear them for now. You can take them off anytime you want."

Kai stared at him, weighing the relentless determination in Tyler's expression. From the looks of it, he knew Tyler would simply keep pestering him until he complied. Letting out a heavy, defeated sigh, he muttered, "There is."

"All right, let's go there."

They turned and walked together, moving deeper into the winding layout of the alleyway until they reached a sharp stone corner. Just as they were about to round the bend, Kai signaled him to halt. Tyler stopped short of the corner, pressing his back flat against the cold stone wall. In the quiet of the alley, the sharp, crisp rustle of clean cloth echoed as Kai stripped out of his rags.

A few minutes later, the rustling stopped, and Kai stepped back around the corner into view.

"Whoa," Tyler said, a broad smile breaking across his face. "They really suit you."

Kai's cheeks instantly flushed a deep crimson. "You're just saying that," he muttered, dropping his chin to stare at the ground.

Tyler extended both hands palms-up. With a soft shimmer, his old leather boots materialized into his grasp. "You can wear these, too."

Kai took the sturdy boots, sliding his bare feet into the worn leather. As he pulled the straps tight, a sudden memory crossed his mind. *I'm sure he was wearing these exact boots when I first met him. What happened to them?*

"Done," Kai said, straightening up. "What now?"

Tyler looked him up and down. *He doesn't look like a street kid anymore, but he still looks kinda... dirty and broke. Well, that doesn't matter. I hope our plan works.*

Meanwhile, inside the quiet confines of the blacksmith shop, Hector held a long steel blade in his calloused hands. He moved a thick rag smoothly along the flats of the metal, wiping away the dark, fine metallic dust that had accumulated from his long session with the whetstone. He tilted the silver sword toward the window, watching the bright afternoon sunlight filter through the glass and dance along the polished edge.

*That kid still hasn't come back after all this time. I knew it,* Hector thought, a trace of disappointment settling in his chest. *Even though he clearly had the talent and the skills, he didn't want to work for me. He probably went to ask for another job over at Old Man Ron's.*

"Hello?" a familiar, clear voice suddenly echoed through the front showroom. "Hector, are you here?"

Hector’s eyes snapped wide. *It's Tyler.*

He immediately set the polishing rag down on his workbench, turned, and pulled open the heavy wooden back door, stepping straight out of his workshop and into the main shop counter area.

As he entered the showroom, he found Tyler standing directly by the front counter.

"Hi," Tyler said, a brilliant, radiant smile lighting up his face.

"Welcome back," Hector said, crossing the floorboards toward him. His gaze immediately shifted to the figure standing rigidly beside the boy. Though the clothes were entirely new, the facial features were instantly recognizable. Hector stopped, his brow raising. "Is that who I think it is?"

"This is Kai," Tyler said, gesturing proudly to the boy.

Kai stood locked in place, his hands clamped tightly together near his waist. His entire frame shivered with intense nervousness under Hector's heavy gaze. *How the hell did I get myself into this?* he thought, staring fixedly at the floor.
