Chronicles Of The Crafting Hero [REMASTERED]

Chapter 42: Calm Before The Storm

James and Tyler stood in front of a large, three-story building. The afternoon sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the street.

"Alright, I need to head back," James said, stopping near the entrance.

Tyler looked at him, the weight of the day settling heavily on his shoulders. "Thank you. For everything."

"Don't worry about it," James said gently.

"I promise, I'll pay you back," Tyler insisted, his voice tight.

James offered a small nod. "Yeah. You know what? I'll see you tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow?" Tyler asked, surprised.

"Yeah," James said. "I still haven't taught you the full basics of hunting yet. And you don't even know about the territories, so... wait for me tomorrow. I'll pass by when we go to the monster zones."

"Alright. Thanks," Tyler said.

James turned and headed back down the street, his boots echoing against the cobblestones until he disappeared around a corner.

Tyler turned his gaze to the inn. The wide double doors were fully open, inviting in the fading afternoon breeze. He stepped inside. The air smelled faintly of polished wood and melted wax. A man sat quietly behind a small, curved wooden counter near the entrance.

"Good evening," the innkeeper said with a polite nod. "How can I help you?"

"I need a room."

"A room. For how many nights, sir?"

"Just one."

"That’ll be one silver." The man extended his open palm over the counter.

Tyler reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against the cold silver coin. He pulled it out and pressed it firmly into the innkeeper's palm. The man pulled open a heavy wooden drawer, dropped the coin into a leather pouch filled with other clinking silver pieces, and slid it shut.

"Let me take you to a room."

Tyler circled around the counter, following the man down a quiet hallway lined with identical doors. The innkeeper stopped at a door with a tarnished brass number 4 nailed to the wood and pushed it open.

Inside, the wooden floorboards were swept and polished. A small bed sat tucked into the corner of the room. Beside it rested a small brown nightstand holding an unlit candle. The sheets on the bed were clean, with two folded blankets and a stuffed pillow resting on top. Warm, sunset-orange light poured through the single window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

"These ones are our regular rooms," the innkeeper explained. "Our exclusive rooms cost two silver a night. They have bigger space, a bigger bed, allowing you to sleep even more comfortably. We even provide you with baths."

"Oh," Tyler said, looking around the modest space. "I'm fine with this one."

"Alright, sir. Have a good night," the man said. He stepped back into the hallway and pulled the door shut with a soft click.

Tyler exhaled a long, exhausted breath.

He raised his hand, and the stamped registration paper he was holding shimmered with a faint blue light before dissolving into his inventory. He walked over to the bed and sat down. He sank into the mattress slightly, the metal springs shifting beneath his weight but holding firm. It wasn't uncomfortable at all. In fact, it was significantly softer than the stiff pallet he was used to at James's house.

"Dammit," he muttered under his breath.

The quiet of the room suddenly amplified his thoughts. Unbidden, the image of little Heather flashed in his mind, the way she had gasped, dropped her ball, and scrambled to hide behind James’s leg in sheer terror.

He ran a heavy hand roughly down his face. "What have I done? So stupid."

"Stupid," he repeated into the empty room. He pressed his fist hard against his forehead, squeezing his eyes shut as a burning wave of embarrassment and shame washed over him.

He exhaled a shaky breath. *If only I hadn't pushed myself so far. If only I'd been more careful, and not so reckless... this wouldn't have happened.*

He dropped his hand to his thigh, his grip tightening into the fabric of his pants. *Fifty silver. No. I owe him way more than that. With how much he's helped me, I at least owe him two gold coins. He helped me escape from the monster zones. He gave me a place to sleep. He even trained me, taught me about this world. He did everything.*

His knuckles turned white. "Only for me to do it all over again."

He stood up abruptly, pacing toward the window. "I won't let it happen. Not again. I didn't show up in their lives just to be a burden."

His hands slowly relaxed as the dark memories of his past surfaced. *This already happened where I came from. I can't let this happen in another world. I've got a second chance.*

With a sudden pulse of light, the translucent System panel materialized in the air before him, displaying his upgraded stats.

*I'm going to make things right.*

He mentally focused, dismissing his status page and calling up the new skills he had unlocked from his massive level-up. The text shifted seamlessly.

[SKILL: ACCESSORY CRAFT - LV1]

[DESCRIPTION: ENABLES THE USER TO CHANNEL SYSTEM PROPERTIES INTO SMALL-SCALE ITEMS. THE USER CAN CRAFT COMPACT EQUIPMENT LIKE NECKLACES AND RINGS THAT PROVIDE UNIQUE ADVANTAGES. CRAFTED ACCESSORIES WILL EITHER ENHANCE THE USER'S BASE ATTRIBUTES CONSTANTLY, OR STORE EFFECTS THAT THE USER CAN TRIGGER FOR SHORT-TERM SURVIVAL ABILITIES.]

[AT LEVEL 1, THE USER CAN ONLY CRAFT BASIC ACCESSORIES. THERE IS A 30% CHANCE THE USER CAN CRAFT COMMON ACCESSORIES. THE USER MAY INQUIRE FOR A RECIPE ONCE A DAY.]

[WOULD THE USER LIKE TO LAUNCH TUTORIAL?]

Yes, Tyler thought immediately.

The panel vanished, instantly replaced by a new, glowing window.

[ACCESSORY RECIPE:]

[1 BRUNISH TREE LEAF. 1 SMALL BRONZE INGOT. > VITAL NECKLACE]

"Huh. A Brunish leaf?" Tyler muttered, staring at the text. "I don't think I have that."

The panel shifted again, flashing a new line of text:

[ALL THE ITEMS IN THE RECIPE ARE IN THE USER'S INVENTORY.]

What, really?* Tyler thought in surprise. He mentally pulled up his inventory, his eyes scanning rapidly through the grid of small floating icons. *I don't think I have it, though...*

He paused, his eyes catching on a familiar shape. *Wait.*

He held out his palm. A piece of wood materialized into his hand. The leaves attached to it still felt slightly moist to the touch. A small identification bar hovered just above it:

[Brunish Tree Branch]

"Oh," Tyler breathed out. "I must have gotten it when I was going around snapping those branches to use for crafting the spear that time. I didn't even think this was going to come in handy."

With a thought, the branch disappeared back into his spatial storage.

"Craft Vital Necklace," Tyler commanded quietly.

The recipe panel dissolved, immediately replaced by a bright, flashing notification.

[CRAFTING SUCCESSFUL]

A soft weight dropped into his open palm. Tyler looked down. Resting against his skin was a delicate necklace with a thin brown chain. Attached to the center was a round, polished pendant bearing a small, intricate green carving of a leaf.

"What does this do?"

A small System bar popped into existence hovering right beside the jewelry.

[+4 HP]

Tyler's eyes widened. "Whoa. This increases my HP by four?"

He quickly brought the necklace up over his head, hooking the small clasp securely at the back of his neck. As the pendant settled against his chest, he watched his HP value on the periphery of his vision instantly tick upward by four points.

He curled his fingers around the smooth pendant. *This is pretty awesome. Accessory Craft is incredibly useful. With this, I can equip a lot more small items to help me in battle without being weighed down.*

He left the necklace on and looked back into the empty space of the room. "Now, Alchemy."

The System responded instantly, pulling up the final unread description.

[SKILL: ALCHEMY - LV1]

[DESCRIPTION: GRANTS THE USER THE KNOWLEDGE TO EXTRACT AND FUSE PROPERTIES FROM VARIOUS MATERIALS. THE USER CAN CRAFT ELIXIRS FOR RAPID HEALING, STAT BUFFS, AND GENERAL UTILITY SUBSTANCES. THIS SKILL ENCOURAGES EXPERIMENTATION; THE USER MAY MIX UNKNOWN INGREDIENTS TO FORGE HIGHLY POTENT RESULTS, SUCH AS ENERGY-STORING CRYSTALS. SUCCESS RATES OF COMPLEX RECIPES ARE DETERMINED BY THE CURRENT SKILL LEVEL.]

[THE USER MAY INQUIRE FOR A RECIPE THAT GOES WITH ALCHEMY ONCE A DAY. THIS SKILL HAS LESS POTENCY AT LEVEL 1, SO BASIC EXPERIMENTATIONS ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.]

Tyler rubbed his chin, reading over the glowing text carefully. "This skill sounds pretty powerful. Just like the games in my world, I actually get to use potions to heal myself?"

A final prompt interrupted his thoughts, blinking steadily in the dimming orange light of the room.

[WOULD THE USER LIKE TO LAUNCH TUTORIAL?]

"Yes," Tyler muttered.

[ALCHEMY RECIPE:]

[7 PETALS OF A MATURE VITAL FLOWER + 350ML OF WATER -> BASIC HEALING POTION]

[NOTE: A VIAL IS REQUIRED TO CONTAIN POTIONS.]

Tyler read the recipe, rubbing the back of his neck. *I don't have any of these. Now that I think about it, it's a good idea to keep water in my inventory in case I ever need it.*

The panel disappeared. Tyler walked back over to his bed and sat heavily on the mattress. "How do I get a vial?" he wondered, staring at the floorboards.

As if reading his mind, the translucent panel flashed back into existence.

[WOULD THE USER LIKE AN ACCESSORY RECIPE FOR A VIAL?]

"Oh, so it's an accessory? Yes," Tyler responded.

[ACCESSORY RECIPE:]

[ONE LV-10 SLIME CORE -> 78MM X 78MM X 147MM VIAL]

*Are these the measurements of the vial?*Tyler thought as he read the precise numbers on the recipe. "Anyway, I have this, so... Craft vial."

As soon as the command left his lips, the recipe panel was instantly replaced.

[CRAFTING SUCCESSFUL]

"That was fast. Is it because it's an accessory?"

He opened his right palm. The air just above his skin glowed with a sudden, faint blue light, casting eerie shadows against the walls of the dim room. A glass vial materialized directly into his hand. It felt warm to the touch, the surface perfectly smooth and flawless.

"Wow..." he exhaled, genuinely impressed, rolling the empty vial between his fingers. 'It feels like it's made of pure glass..."

He remembered holding the slime core back when he looted it; it had felt like a dense, compressed ball of heavy glass. "Did the system just melt it down? How does that even work?"

With a quick thought, the vial vanished into his inventory.

*Right now, all that's left is to get those ingredients for the potion*, he thought. *I'll ask James all about it tomorrow. Maybe even about Ada's tree.*

He stood up from the bed, grabbing the pillow and adjusting it near the small wooden headboard as he prepared for sleep. But as he reached down and pulled back the folded blankets, a sudden, jarring thought breached his mind.

The dream.

It had been completely buried by the chaotic adrenaline of waking up, the argument with James, and the rush of becoming a Hunter. But now, in the quiet isolation of the inn room, the memory of his coma resurfaced.

He frowned, his hands freezing on the blanket. *What a weird dream*, he thought.

He remembered the stifling air of his childhood bedroom. The way the floor had simply vanished into a terrifying, endless expanse of nothingness. The laundry basket falling forever without a sound. And then, the violent snap back to reality, followed immediately by the stinging, hateful slap from his aunt.

The dream felt exaggerated. He only got slapped for breaking the tv. *That darkness wasn't there.*

He sighed, letting go of the blanket and sitting on the edge of the mattress. "Why did I have to dream about that? Out of all things... why that nightmare?"

He looked up at the stained wooden ceiling, desperately trying to think of something else. He didn't want to fall back into that familiar, suffocating feeling he always had in his old world.

He had once spent hours every single day agonizing over his childhood, letting the memories eat him alive. He wanted to change that. He needed to change that.

"Oh, yeah, right," he muttered, a sudden realization clicking in his mind.

The translucent System panel materialized in the air above him. He navigated to his skills, his eyes locking onto the Rush skill. He knew it had leveled up,* but... I didn't actually check what it does now.*

With a thought, the new description overlaid the previous text:

[SKILL: RUSH - LV2]

[ONCE ACTIVATED, THE USER WILL RECEIVE A MASSIVE RUSH OF ADRENALINE. THIS WILL BOOST ALL THEIR SENSES, INCREASE ALL STATS BY 75%, AND MASSIVELY INCREASE PAIN TOLERANCE. MANA COST: 40]

"Whoa. The percentage has increased," Tyler whispered. "That's going to give me a massive advantage. It's grown so much more powerful."

He stared at the glowing text, new thoughts rapidly surfacing. *The mana cost completely doubled, too.*

He looked down at his own hand, flexing his fingers as a dark, creeping thought followed. *What if the aftereffects increased as well?*

He shuddered, vividly remembering the sheer, blinding agony he had felt when the skill's duration ran out. He sighed heavily. *I just hope that's not the case.*

He let himself fall backward, his shoulders slamming softly against the mattress. He stared up at the ceiling, mentally cataloging everything he had achieved so far. *I have everything I need. Long-range weapons, short-range weapons. I'm even an official Hunter now. So I won't have to worry about getting caught by the guards for entering monster zones.*

He sat up quickly, the mattress bouncing slightly from the sudden force. *I almost forgot again. I have so many things running through my head.*

He looked at the empty space in front of him and muttered, "System, give me a common weapon recipe."

The System panel appeared instantly, displaying a small, rotating circular bar as it processed his request. *Earlier, it said that it will give me a random weapon recipe if I don't specify the item*, he remembered.

[WEAPON RECIPE:]

[ 1 LARGE STEEL INGOTS +1 MEDIUM IRON INGOT+ 1 D-RANK SLIME CORE -> BASHING HAMMER.]

"A hammer?" Tyler said, his voice filled with a mix of surprise and mild disappointment. *I mean, I knew it was going to be random, but...*

He sighed, shaking his head. *I don't really think those kinds of weapons fit my fighting style. I'm already used to using a sword or a spear. A heavy hammer would just be like swinging a mace.*

After a brief pause, he shrugged. "Whatever. I'll get used to it. I have Weapon Mastery, right?"

"Okay. How about I be specific with this next one?" he muttered to himself. "I have a cuirass. I even got a glove recipe, but I haven't made those yet. What am I missing? A helmet?"

He held his chin, looking down at his knees in deep thought. "Oh." A realization hit him.

"I definitely need better pants," he muttered, plucking at the rough fabric of his trousers.

How about I phrase it like this?

"System," he commanded clearly. "Give me a recipe for Assassin-class pants."

A brief pause stretched out, leaving him sitting in an awkward silence. *Well. I guess that didn't work.*

Suddenly, the System panel flashed with new text:

[ARMOR RECIPE:]

[1 D-RANK GLOOMFANG HIDE + 1 E-RANK SHADOWCLAW HIDE -> GLOOMSHADOW LEGGINGS.]

"Oh, so I have to kill a Gloomfang and another Shadowclaw," he noted, narrowing his eyes as he studied the text.

*Well, only Alchemy is left*, he thought. *I don't really know anything about the skill yet, so I'll just ask for a recipe and let it randomly generate one. I'll learn more as time goes on.*

"System. Give me a recipe for Alchemy."

[ALCHEMY RECIPE:]

[5 EMERALD TREE LEAVES + 1 BRUNISH TREE LEAF + 350 ML OF WATER -> BASIC MANA POTION]

"Wow," Tyler breathed, putting both his hands flat on the mattress and leaning backward in awe. "I even got a mana potion recipe. That means I can refill my mana quickly without having to wait around for it to regenerate naturally."

Satisfied, he willed the panel to disappear. He rubbed his tired eyes, the quiet atmosphere of the room settling over him.

"Alright, it's all done," he murmured, rubbing his tired eyes. "I didn't even work today, but for some reason, I feel completely exhausted."

He swung his legs up onto the bed, sliding under the covers and pulling the thick blanket up to his chest. He rested his head heavily onto the soft pillow, letting his eyes fall shut.

Within moments, the quiet stillness of the inn pulled him down into a deep, dreamless slumber.
