VILLAIN'S HAREM IN OTOME GAME

Chapter 229: A big lie and small tongue slip

Alice blinked. Once. Twice.

Her face cycled through a dozen expressions—sheer disbelief, analytical processing, fury, and pure, staggering bewilderment. Slowly, her fingers slid off his jaw, and she stepped back a pace, clearing her throat with a dry, awkward cough to steady her voice.

"So..." Alice started, gesturing with one trembling hand as if trying to assemble smoke, "you’re telling me... you chosen by the Goddess? You received a divine revelation of the future in a sacred dream... and on the exact morning of your duel with Reinhardt, you decided to turn your entire life around?"

Eren nodded with earnest, wide-eyed sincerity.

He folded his hands politely, tilting his head with the gentle, angelic innocence of the most well-behaved kid in the class. His expression was so profoundly pure that a passing bishop would have canonized him on the spot.

"Precisely," Eren said, his voice dripping with wholesome piety. "A profound spiritual awakening. The heavens spoke, my eyes were opened to my past transgressions, and I chose the path of righteous self-improvement. Truly, a miracle."

Alice pressed her palms against her temples, groaning. "This is absolute nonsense. It’s the biggest pile of horse shit I have ever heard in any of my lives."

"Nonsense?" Eren scoffed, placing an offended hand over his freshly healed chest. "How terribly unfair! I sat here for an hour listening to you babble about invisible sky-hands pulling your puppet strings, looping through multiple timelines, and dating three guys without batting an eye! I gave you full credit! Yet when I revealed my side, suddenly it’s nonsense?"

"Because that’s completely different—!" Alice shouted, cutting herself off as she caught the glaring contradiction in her own words.

She snapped her mouth shut, her cheeks puffing out in an undignified, frustrated pout. She glared at him through narrowed amber eyes. "You’re playing me for a fool. I don’t believe a single word coming out of your mouth."

"And why ever not, Saintess?"

"Because my divine intuition is screaming that you’re lying through your teeth!"

Eren’s innocent facade melted away in a split second, replaced by his signature, infuriatingly smug smirk. "Well, believe it or don’t. Free will is a glorious gift, Alice. What matters is the results."

"Idiot," she grumbled, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

"Thank you," Eren beamed.

Alice let out a ragged breath, forcibly shelving the migraine-inducing mystery of his existence for another day.

"Fine. Put your ridiculous Goddess fairy tale aside," Alice murmured, her gaze locking onto him with laser-sharp focus. "What about Violet? Why are you so fixated on her? Why go this far just to keep her safe?"

The teasing light in Eren’s sapphire eyes faded.

His expression hardened into something quiet, steady, and unexpectedly profound. He looked down at his lap, his hand gently stroking the black fur of the Shadow Cat cub as it curled into a contented ball against his knee.

"Because I simply want her to live," Eren said softly.

His voice was calm, carrying the quiet certainty of bedrock.

"The day you asked me to help draw her out of that suffocating room... the day I realized my manaless body could stabilize her curse... I made her a promise," Eren continued, his gaze drifting up to meet Alice’s eyes. "I promised her that she wouldn’t spend the rest of her life in fear of harming others. That she’d get to laugh, that she’d get to walk beside others, make more friends, and actually live a life she chose for herself."

His jaw tightened.

"She’s just a fragile, gentle girl who wants to live in peace. She is not a pawn. She is not a sacrifice. And she is definitely not going to be the bloody scapegoat in the syndicate’s grand scheme to kill the Empress. I don’t care how many lords this cesspool has, or how deep their roots run. No one touches her."

Alice stood frozen.

Her mouth hung slightly open, her breath catching in her throat. The sharp, suspicious interrogator had vanished entirely, replaced by a girl stunned into absolute silence.

For the first few seconds, she had expected another flippant lie, another slick layer of bravado meant to distract her. But looking into his eyes, she saw no hesitation. Only cold, terrifying, unyielding determination.

He wasn’t bluffing. He wasn’t using Violet for political leverage. He was genuinely, entirely willing to tear Rujgard to ash just to keep that shy girl safe.

A strange, breathless sound slipped past Alice’s lips.

She Chuckled.

Then another.

A soft, incredulous laugh bubbled up from deep within her chest, breaking into a bright, genuine smile—the very first smile she had worn since stepping foot into this city.

Eren blinked, tilting his head with a wary frown as her giggles grew louder. "Hey. Did Branagh’s hammer blows finally rattle your remaining brain loose?"

Alice didn’t answer. Her laughter swelled, echoing through the dusty room, until her knees gave out and she crouched down onto the floor. She buried her face in her bruised hands, her shoulders shaking violently.

The laughter began to crack. The giggles dissolved into soft, gasping sobs, tears of pure, overwhelming relief. Tears washed over her fingers, soaking into her sleeves as she wept with a light, trembling heart.

"I’m just..." Alice gasped through the tears, her voice muffled behind her hands as she looked up at him with red, shining amber eyes, "...I’m just so damn happy."

For countless loops, across dozens of failed, bloody timelines, she had carried the crushing weight of the world completely alone. She had broken her own heart, worn a mask, and stained her hands.

"To know that someone else... someone completely insane... is fighting for her too..." Alice let out a long, shuddering sigh, resting her chin on her knees. "...It feels like I can finally breathe."

They talked for hours.

Two broken people comparing notes on a future, trading fragments like children trading marbles. They mapped The Substance’s distribution networks, identified key players.

Eventually, Alice reached into her sleeve and withdrew the silver cigarette case. She flipped it open with her thumb, the motion practiced and weary, and lit one with a lighter.

"Since when did the Saintess-to-be start smoking?" Eren asked, his head resting on his palm, watching her with lazy curiosity.

"The day my memories awakened," Alice said, exhaling through her nose.

Eren chuckled, the sound soft and knowing. "I should have known it was yours," he murmured, more to himself than her. "When Violet hid that lighter in your shared room."

He froze.

The words had left his mouth before his brain could engage its emergency brakes.

Alice paused.

Her amber eyes fixed on him with the sudden, terrible focus of a predator who’d just heard a twig snap in the forest.

"What," she said slowly, her voice dropping to a whisper, "were you doing in our dorm room alone with Violet?"
