the last sovereign of infinity

Chapter 116: The One Who Remained

Lucien did not fall.

There was nowhere to fall.

He opened his eyes inside a place that had no ground, no sky, no horizon.

Only mirrors.

Thousands.

Millions.

Each reflected a different version of him.

Lucen.

The Sovereign.

The Hollow Sovereign.

The frightened child from the First House.

The older man from the dying future.

A version with a crown.

A version wearing farmer's clothes.

A version scarred beyond recognition.

A version laughing beside Caelum.

A version kneeling over Orion's grave.

A version standing alone in a world without Roads.

All of them looked back.

All of them were him.

None of them were.

A voice came from the nearest mirror.

"You took my life."

Lucien turned.

The Sovereign stood behind the glass.

Silver fire covered his hands.

"You erased me so you could become something easier."

Another mirror spoke.

Lucen.

Young.

Exhausted.

"You abandoned everything I built."

Another.

The Archivist.

"You rejected what I preserved."

Another.

The Hollow Sovereign.

"You gave me the parts of yourself you were ashamed to carry."

More voices joined.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

"You forgot us."

"You used us."

"You denied us."

"You survived because we didn't."

The noise became unbearable.

Lucien covered his ears.

It did nothing.

The voices were inside him.

Then one mirror remained silent.

Small.

Cracked.

Almost hidden.

Lucien approached.

Inside stood himself.

Not younger.

Not older.

Just Lucien.

The version who had walked into the House With the Lantern.

The one who had laughed with Orion.

Argued with Caelum.

Promised the child he would return.

No crown.

No title.

No ancient memory.

He looked ordinary.

Tired.

Confused.

Lucien stared at him.

"Are you the real one?"

The reflection shrugged.

"I was hoping you knew."

Lucien almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead he sat down.

There should have been no floor.

One appeared anyway.

The ordinary Lucien sat opposite him on the other side of the glass.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then the reflection asked,

"Do you want to be Lucen again?"

Lucien thought.

"No."

"The Sovereign?"

"No."

"The Archivist?"

"No."

"The Hollow Sovereign?"

"No."

"Then why are they part of you?"

Lucien looked around.

The mirrors waited.

"Because I was them."

"Was?"

"Somehow."

The reflection tilted his head.

"That sounds convenient."

Lucien sighed.

"You sound like Caelum."

"Probably because you remember him."

That mattered.

Lucien leaned back.

"Maybe that's the problem."

"What?"

"I keep treating identity like a Road."

The reflection frowned.

"Meaning?"

"Like there has to be one correct destination."

The mirrors became quieter.

Lucien looked at the Sovereign.

Then Lucen.

Then the countless discarded futures.

"But people aren't Roads."

The reflection smiled faintly.

"No."

"They're Houses."

Lucien froze.

The phrase arrived before he understood it.

A House.

Built.

Damaged.

Repaired.

Rooms added.

Walls removed.

People entering.

People leaving.

Still the same House.

Not because every piece remained original.

Because the story continued.

Lucien stood.

The ordinary reflection stood too.

He looked toward the Sovereign's mirror.

"I don't have to become you."

The Sovereign watched him.

"But I won't pretend you weren't me."

The silver fire dimmed.

Lucien moved to Lucen.

"You built the Archive because you were afraid people would disappear."

Lucen stared.

"You made mistakes."

Lucien smiled sadly.

"So have I."

The mirror cracked.

Not breaking.

Opening.

Lucen stepped through.

He did not merge with Lucien.

He simply stood beside him.

Lucien turned toward the Hollow Sovereign.

"You carried my anger."

The Hollow Sovereign smiled.

"And made excellent use of it."

"Debatable."

A laugh.

Then he stepped through too.

The Archivist came next.

Then the Sovereign.

Then the child.

The older Lucien.

One by one, versions stepped out of their mirrors.

They surrounded him.

Not enemies.

Not replacements.

Lives.

Choices.

Consequences.

Lucien looked around.

"I can't carry all of you as separate people."

The older Lucien nodded.

"You shouldn't."

"I also can't erase you."

Lucen smiled.

"Progress."

"So what do I do?"

The Sovereign answered.

"Choose."

Lucien shook his head.

"No."

Everyone stared.

He smiled.

"That's what caused this."

The possibility-child appeared between the mirrors.

Not the one from outside.

A memory of them.

"What then?"

Lucien looked at every version of himself.

"Change."

Silence.

The mirrors trembled.

"I don't choose which one is real."

"I let all of them become part of what comes next."

The Sovereign's expression softened.

"That will hurt."

"I know."

"You will remember things you hate."

"I know."

"Love people who no longer exist."

"I know."

"Carry guilt that belongs to lives you barely recognize."

Lucien looked at him.

"I know."

The Hollow Sovereign crossed his arms.

"And what do we get?"

Lucien laughed.

"You?"

"Yes."

"Peace and quiet."

"Unacceptable."

That laughter spread.

Lucen laughed.

The older Lucien laughed.

Even the Sovereign smiled.

The mirrors shattered.

Not violently.

Like rain.

Every reflection became light.

Silver.

Gold.

Black.

White.

Red.

Dawn.

Colors Lucien had no names for.

They entered him.

Memory returned.

Not all at once.

Enough.

A thousand childhood mornings.

The first time Caelum protected him.

The first time he protected Caelum.

Aurel carving the wooden lantern.

His mother shouting because they tracked mud through the House.

The Archive beginning.

The Sovereign rising.

The first war.

The first Road breaking.

His own death.

His rebirth.

Every mistake.

Every kindness.

Not complete.

Never complete.

But connected.

Lucien screamed.

Then laughed.

Then cried.

Then everything became quiet.

One voice remained.

His own.

"I am Lucien."

The emptiness answered.

Not Lucen?

"I was."

Not Sovereign?

"I was."

Not Hollow?

"I was."

Not Archivist?

"I was."

Then what are you?

Lucien smiled.

"Still becoming."

A door appeared.

Wooden.

Worn.

A golden lantern hung above it.

Lucien opened it.

---

Caelum caught him before he hit the ground.

"Lucien!"

The Endfield returned.

Orion.

Astrael.

Tomorrow.

Cael.

Lyra.

Aurel.

The Hollow Sovereign.

The Archivist.

Certainty.

The Unremembered.

The possibility-child.

Everyone.

The shattered pieces of the Lantern of Welcome lay around him.

Dark.

Caelum held his face.

"Say something."

Lucien blinked.

"You're loud."

Caelum closed his eyes.

Relief nearly broke him.

Then he punched Lucien.

Not hard.

Enough.

Lucien stared.

"Did you just hit me?"

"You disappeared."

"I noticed."

"You vanished after saying 'I remember.'"

"That does sound dramatic."

Orion pointed.

"Extremely dramatic."

Lucien slowly sat up.

Something felt different.

No voices.

No pressure.

The ancient memories were there.

But they no longer felt like strangers trying to take control.

They were rooms.

He could enter.

Or not.

Aurel watched carefully.

"Who are you?"

Lucien looked at him.

The question no longer frightened him.

"Your brother."

Aurel's eyes filled.

Then Lucien looked at Caelum.

"His too."

Caelum laughed.

Lucien looked toward the Hollow Sovereign.

"You don't have to kneel anymore."

The Hollow Sovereign raised an eyebrow.

"I rarely did."

"You were very dramatic about it."

"That was style."

Lucien smiled.

Then looked at the Archivist.

"You are not me."

The Archivist stiffened.

Lucien continued.

"But you came from me."

A pause.

"And now?"

"Now you decide."

The Archivist stared.

Then slowly nodded.

The possibility-child approached.

Their lantern remained shattered.

"Does that mean there's only one Lucien now?"

Lucien thought.

"No."

The child frowned.

He tapped their forehead.

"It means I don't need there to be."

They smiled.

Then Lyra gasped.

Everyone turned.

The Roads had returned.

Not converging.

Not demanding.

Flowing.

Millions of possible paths spread through the Endfield.

Appearing.

Changing.

Fading.

Living.

The older Lucien was gone.

Not erased.

Finished.

His faded blue ribbon remained wrapped around Lucien's wrist.

The future Keeper was gone too.

Her red lantern rested in the Unremembered's hands.

Certainty stared at the Roads.

"They have no fixed ending."

Orion slapped his shoulder.

"Welcome to anxiety."

Certainty looked horrified.

Lucien laughed.

Then the broken pieces of the Lantern of Welcome moved.

Everyone became still.

The fragments rose.

Lucien expected them to rebuild.

They didn't.

Instead, each piece floated toward someone else.

One to Caelum.

One to Orion.

Astrael.

Tomorrow.

Cael.

Lyra.

Aurel.

The Hollow Sovereign.

The Archivist.

Certainty.

The possibility-child.

The Unremembered.

The last fragment remained before Lucien.

He reached for it.

It moved away.

Orion blinked.

"It rejected you."

Lucien frowned.

"Apparently."

The possibility-child smiled.

"No."

They understood first.

"The Lantern isn't yours anymore."

The fragment flew upward.

Every piece ignited.

Golden.

Then flew outward along different Roads.

Lucien stared.

"What is it doing?"

The Archivist whispered,

"Multiplying."

Far away...

The House With the Lantern answered.

One flame became two.

Then three.

Across villages.

Across forgotten cities.

Across worlds that had never had Houses before.

Lanterns appeared.

Not copies of the First Lantern.

New ones.

Different shapes.

Different flames.

The Unremembered stared at the fragment floating before her.

"What does this mean?"

Lucien smiled.

"It means there doesn't need to be one Bearer."

Caelum slowly understood.

"No Last Sovereign."

"No."

Lucien looked at the endless Roads.

"No First Sovereign either."

The title had always been a cage.

One person holding responsibility for everything.

One Bearer.

One Lantern.

One correct Road.

They had repeated the same mistake again and again.

Lucien stood.

"The light was never meant to belong to one person."

The Endfield shook.

Not in danger.

Release.

The black tower of broken lanterns collapsed.

Every piece became a small flame.

Millions of lights rose into the sky.

Stars.

For the first time, the Endfield had a night sky.

Orion looked upward.

"That's actually beautiful."

Astrael glanced at him.

"No joke?"

"I can appreciate things."

A beat.

"Occasionally."

Then the Unremembered's red lantern pulsed.

Once.

Her fragment of golden light moved into it.

Red and gold mixed.

She gasped.

Her face changed.

A nose formed.

Dark hair.

Skin.

A complete face.

Everyone stared.

She touched her cheeks.

Then her hair.

Tears immediately followed.

The possibility-child grinned.

"You have a face!"

"I..."

Her voice was still new.

She laughed.

"I do."

Lucien smiled.

"How does it feel?"

She considered.

"Strange."

"Good strange?"

"I don't know yet."

"Perfect."

Then the red lantern projected a Road.

Not forward.

Not backward.

Home.

The House.

The valley.

Alden.

The child.

Lucien exhaled.

"Finally."

Caelum looked suspicious.

"Do not say that."

Lucien glanced at him.

"Why?"

"Every time someone says something is finally over..."

The Road turned black.

Caelum closed his eyes.

"...that."

Orion groaned.

"I blame Lucien."

Lucien stared at the Road.

The darkness did not feel hostile.

Different.

Old.

Familiar.

Then a voice came through.

Alden.

Faint.

"Lucien?"

Lucien stepped closer.

"Alden?"

Static-like darkness rippled.

Then the child's voice.

The one waiting at the House.

"Lucien!"

Relief hit him.

"We're coming."

"No!"

The urgency stopped him.

The child continued.

"You can't."

Lucien frowned.

"Why?"

Silence.

Then Alden spoke.

His voice was shaking.

"The House opened a new door."

Lucien's stomach dropped.

"What kind?"

"We don't know."

The Road flickered.

A final image appeared.

The House With the Lantern.

Repaired.

Warm.

Alive.

Inside the main room...

A door stood where no door had existed before.

Black wood.

No handle.

No markings.

Except one.

A simple carving.

A circle.

Inside it...

A single dot.

Lucien stared.

He remembered that symbol.

Not from Lucen.

Not from the Sovereign.

Not from any life.

From before all of them.

The oldest memory inside him recoiled.

Aurel saw his expression.

"What is it?"

Lucien's voice became very quiet.

"The first door."

Caelum froze.

"Before the Roads?"

"Before the First World."

The possibility-child's flame dimmed.

Certainty stepped backward.

Even the Archivist looked afraid.

The image shifted.

The black door inside the House slowly opened.

Alden whispered through the Road,

"Something came through."

Lucien looked at the darkness beyond the doorway.

"What?"

A shadow moved inside the House.

Human-sized.

Slow.

It stepped into the lantern light.

Everyone in the Endfield became silent.

The figure was an old woman.

Simple dress.

Gray hair.

No weapon.

No lantern.

She looked directly through the Road.

At Lucien.

Then smiled.

Lucien's blood turned cold.

His mother had once told him stories about that woman.

Stories he had believed were only stories.

The old woman lifted one finger to her lips.

"Don't tell the Roads I'm here."

Then she looked around the House and sighed.

"My goodness."

Her smile widened.

"You children made quite a mess while I was gone."

The Road went dark.

Lucien stood frozen.

Orion slowly looked at him.

"You know her."

Lucien nodded.

Caelum whispered,

"Who?"

Lucien stared at the dead Road.

Then answered with a name that had not been spoken since before the First World had a sky.

"Grandmother."
