Chapter 111: The Child Who Never Was
The dawn flame turned black.
No one moved.
The change was almost gentle.
One moment, the little lantern in the child's hands carried the soft light of morning.
The next, its flame became completely dark.
Not extinguished.
Black.
The child's smile remained.
"Why are you afraid?"
Lucien stared at them.
The black book lay open behind him.
One sentence remained written across its page.
THERE WAS NEVER A CHILD OF THE FIRST FLAME.
Caelum stepped between Lucien and the child.
His sword left its sheath.
"Back away."
The child looked at him.
"Caelum."
"Don't."
"You know me."
"No."
The answer came immediately.
The child blinked.
Caelum tightened his grip.
"I remember believing I knew you."
Aurel moved beside him.
His silver lantern brightened.
"So do I."
The child looked between them.
Confusion appeared.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Confusion.
"Serin knew me."
Aurel's expression hardened.
"Serin remembered you."
"There's a difference."
The Archive trembled.
The Archivist slowly approached the black book.
He did not touch it.
"Interesting."
Lucien looked toward him.
"You knew?"
"No."
The Archivist stared at the child.
"That is why I find it interesting."
"You remember everything."
"Everything that happened."
The child became very still.
The Archivist continued.
"And I have no original record of you."
Orion quietly stepped behind Astrael.
"I would like to return to the part where we argued about bread."
Astrael did not look away from the child.
"Stay behind me."
"For once, happily."
Tomorrow moved closer to Lyra and Cael.
The Hollow Sovereign raised his amber lantern.
The Unremembered remained beside Lucien.
Strangely...
She did not appear frightened.
She tilted her featureless head toward the child.
As though seeing something familiar.
Lucien noticed.
"You know what they are."
The Unremembered slowly shook her head.
No.
Then she raised one hand.
But I know what they are not.
"What?"
She pointed toward the black book.
A lie.
Silence.
Caelum glanced toward her.
"The book says they never existed."
So did I.
That stopped everyone.
The Unremembered stepped toward the child.
Caelum raised his sword.
Lucien touched the blade.
"Wait."
"Lucien—"
"Wait."
The Unremembered stopped several steps from the child.
Two impossible beings faced one another.
One without a face.
One without a past.
The child's black flame flickered.
The Unremembered raised her hand.
Were you afraid?
The child stared.
"Of what?"
Not existing.
The smile disappeared.
A tiny expression.
Barely noticeable.
But Lucien saw it.
Fear.
The Unremembered saw it too.
I was.
The child looked down at their lantern.
"I don't remember."
Neither did I.
The Archivist whispered,
"Impossible."
Lucien turned.
"What?"
The Archivist's eyes widened as information moved behind them.
"The Archive has no record."
"Of the child?"
"Of the concept."
Aurel frowned.
"What concept?"
The Archivist looked toward the Unremembered.
"First Flame."
His voice became quieter.
"There is no First Flame."
The golden-eyed child raised their head.
Their eyes were no longer golden.
One had become black.
The other...
White.
Lucien's Lantern of Welcome reacted.
Gold surged around him.
Not attacking.
Protecting.
The child whispered,
"Then what am I?"
No one answered.
Lucien looked at the black book.
The future Lucien had warned him.
Don't trust the child.
Then corrected himself.
I remembered wrong.
That mattered.
He approached.
Caelum grabbed his shoulder.
"No."
Lucien looked at him.
"They're scared."
"We don't know what they are."
"Neither do they."
"That makes them more dangerous."
"Possibly."
Caelum stared.
"You are infuriating."
"I've heard."
Lucien stepped past him.
The child backed away.
"Don't."
Lucien stopped.
"All right."
That surprised them.
Lucien lowered the Lantern of Welcome.
He sat on the Archive floor.
Orion blinked.
"What is he doing?"
Tomorrow smiled faintly.
"Something Lucien does."
"Which is?"
"Refusing to behave appropriately during cosmic disasters."
Lucien ignored them.
He looked at the child.
"You don't need to come closer."
The child's mismatched eyes watched him.
"But I'm staying here."
"Why?"
"Because you asked me a question once."
The child frowned.
"What question?"
"When you light a lantern, who do you hope will see it?"
Something moved across the child's face.
Recognition.
Not memory.
Recognition.
Lucien continued.
"I answered whoever was still searching."
The black flame trembled.
"Maybe you were searching too."
The child stared.
"I don't exist."
Lucien looked toward the Unremembered.
"Apparently that's becoming less unusual around here."
Orion nodded.
"Very crowded category."
Astrael elbowed him.
"Ow."
The child's lips twitched.
Almost a smile.
Then the Archive screamed.
Shelves shifted violently.
The preserved worlds surrounding them flickered.
The Archivist spun toward the throne.
"What is happening?"
The black book's pages began turning.
Faster.
Faster.
Thousands of blank pages.
Then writing appeared.
Not one sentence.
Names.
Millions.
Billions.
Names that had never existed.
Cities never built.
Children never born.
Wars never fought.
Songs never written.
The Archive filled with possibilities.
The Unremembered staggered.
They're waking.
Aurel raised his lantern.
"Who?"
The Archivist answered.
"The Never-Were."
The child dropped their lantern.
It struck the floor.
Black fire spilled outward.
The Archive floor cracked.
Beneath it was not darkness.
A sky.
Blue.
Bright.
Filled with clouds.
Lucien stared downward.
A world existed beneath the Archive.
Then another crack.
Another world.
Another.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Possibilities.
Worlds that had never happened.
The Archivist looked horrified.
"The Archive is opening them."
Lucien looked at the child.
"No."
Understanding came.
"They are."
The child stared at their own hands.
"I don't know how."
The black book floated into the air.
Its pages spread like wings.
Every unwritten possibility responded to the child.
The Hollow Sovereign whispered,
"They're not the Child of the First Flame."
"No."
Lucien slowly stood.
The child looked at him.
"Then what am I?"
Lucien had no answer.
But the Archivist did.
His face went completely white.
He backed away.
"No."
Aurel turned.
"What?"
The Archivist pointed toward the child.
"I remember."
The child froze.
"You said there was no record."
"There wasn't."
The Archivist looked toward Lucien.
"Because you erased it before I was created."
Lucien's heartbeat changed.
"What did I erase?"
The Archivist's voice trembled.
"Not a person."
The worlds beneath them multiplied.
"An idea."
"What idea?"
The Archivist stared at the child.
"The possibility..."
"...that reality could choose differently."
Silence.
The black book slammed shut.
Every impossible world froze.
Lucien looked at the child.
The truth settled slowly.
"You aren't a child."
They looked frightened.
Lucien continued gently.
"That's simply the shape you chose."
"Why?"
The Unremembered answered.
Because children become things they have never been before.
The child stared at her.
The black and white eyes filled with tears.
The Archivist stepped backward.
"Do you understand what that means?"
Lucien did.
The Archive preserved what was.
The Unremembered represented what never became.
And this child...
"What Could Be," Tomorrow whispered.
The child looked at her.
Tomorrow smiled.
"You're possibility."
The Archive shook.
The Never-Were answered.
The child covered their ears.
"No."
Lucien approached.
This time they did not tell him to stop.
"I don't want this."
"You don't have to."
"I can feel them."
Millions of possible worlds flickered beneath their feet.
"They want to exist."
The Unremembered moved beside the child.
So did I.
"What did you do?"
The faceless woman became still.
Then answered.
I ran.
The child laughed through tears.
It was painfully ordinary.
Lucien smiled.
"That's an option."
The child looked at him.
"What would you do?"
Lucien considered.
Then shrugged.
"Probably make a terrible decision."
Caelum sighed behind him.
"Accurate."
"But..."
Lucien looked around.
At his companions.
"...I wouldn't make it alone."
The child looked at Orion.
Astrael.
Tomorrow.
Cael.
Lyra.
Caelum.
Aurel.
The Hollow Sovereign.
The Unremembered.
Finally, the Archivist.
Something changed.
The black flame in their fallen lantern flickered.
A thread of dawn returned.
The Archive steadied.
The possible worlds stopped multiplying.
The Archivist stared.
"How?"
Lucien looked at the child.
"Possibility doesn't need to become everything."
The child whispered,
"It only needs a choice."
The dawn flame brightened.
Exactly.
The word came from everywhere.
Not a voice.
Understanding.
The black book fell to the floor.
Closed.
Quiet.
The crisis ended.
For perhaps three seconds.
Then Orion pointed toward the book.
"Is it supposed to bleed?"
Everyone looked.
A thin red line seeped from beneath the cover.
Not ink.
Blood.
Lucien approached carefully.
The faded blue ribbon in his hand pulled toward it.
The black book opened.
One page.
One sentence.
Written in red.
ONE FUTURE HAS REFUSED TO CHANGE.
The child stared.
"I can't see it."
The Archivist frowned.
"Neither can I."
The Unremembered stepped backward.
I can.
Lucien turned.
"What do you see?"
She raised a trembling hand toward the page.
The House.
Lucien's chest tightened.
"What about it?"
The red writing changed.
A new sentence appeared.
THE LAST HOUSE IS BURNING.
Everything inside Lucien went still.
Alden.
The child in the valley.
The promise.
I will return.
He grabbed the Lantern of Welcome.
"We're leaving."
Aurel stepped forward.
"The Archive hasn't released you."
"It will."
"Lucien—"
"It will."
The Lantern exploded with golden light.
A Road formed.
Not silver.
Not white.
Gold.
Straight through the Archive.
Straight toward home.
The Archivist stared.
"You cannot create a Road through preserved memory."
Lucien stepped onto it.
"Apparently I can."
Caelum smiled.
"There he is."
The others followed.
The possibility-child picked up their lantern.
The Unremembered took their hand.
Together they stepped onto the golden Road.
Behind them, the Archivist remained.
Lucien looked back.
"Coming?"
The Archivist stared at the Archive.
His throne.
His eternity.
Then at Lucien's extended hand.
Slowly...
He stepped away from the throne.
The moment his foot touched the golden Road, the colorless robes covering him changed.
Simple gray cloth.
Human.
His eyes widened.
"I..."
Lucien smiled.
"Later."
The Road moved.
The Archive disappeared.
Wind struck them.
Smoke followed.
Heat.
Lucien emerged onto a hillside overlooking the valley.
He stopped.
Everyone did.
The House With the Lantern was burning.
Golden flames consumed the roof.
Black fire climbed the walls.
Villagers ran carrying buckets.
Alden stood before the porch, blood covering one side of his face.
And beside him...
The child Lucien had promised to return to was holding the journal against their chest.
Someone stood between them and the burning House.
A man in a gray cloak.
Erevan.
The First Seeker.
His broken lantern burned black.
But he was not attacking Alden.
He was protecting him.
Because across the valley stood hundreds of figures dressed in white.
Each carrying a colorless lantern.
The Everlasting had reached the Last House.
Erevan looked up.
He saw Lucien.
Relief crossed his exhausted face.
"Took you long enough."
Then the burning roof collapsed.
And the original lantern above the front door fell into the flames.
