the last sovereign of infinity

Chapter 107: Those Who Remember Everything

The white hand did not cast a shadow.

That was the first thing Lucien noticed.

The second was that he knew it.

Not the person.

The hand.

Every crease across its fingers.

Every joint.

The exact way the index finger bent slightly inward.

Recognition entered him without permission.

A memory followed.

He was six.

Someone held that hand while crossing a river.

Then twelve.

The same hand rested on his shoulder after his first fight.

Seventeen.

The hand passed him a lantern.

Twenty-three.

The hand held a blade.

Lucien staggered.

"Stop."

The white hand continued through the crack.

Another memory.

A funeral.

Rain.

A name.

Lucien knew the name.

Then immediately forgot it.

Then remembered again.

Over and over.

His knees weakened.

Caelum caught him.

"Don't look at them!"

Too late.

The silhouettes beyond the crack stepped closer.

Millions of memories crashed into Lucien.

Not visions.

Memories.

His.

Other people's.

The world's.

A village that had existed eight thousand years ago.

A woman named Mara who baked honey bread every seventh morning.

Her husband's laugh.

Their son's first word.

The color of the door to their home.

The argument they had before Mara died.

Her final breath.

Lucien remembered all of it.

Then another life arrived.

Then another.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Lucien screamed.

The Lantern of Welcome fell from his hand.

Caelum dragged him backward.

"LUCIEN!"

Aurel raised his silver lantern.

"Close your eyes!"

Lucien did.

It didn't matter.

The memories were already inside.

A soldier dying beneath a red sky.

A child losing her first tooth.

A king murdering his brother.

A fisherman repairing a net.

A mother forgetting her daughter's face.

A god begging someone to remember him.

Lucien remembered everything.

Everything.

Everything.

Then—

A whistle shrieked.

Again.

Orion.

Lucien almost laughed through the pain.

The absurd sound gave him something small to hold.

One moment.

One person.

One present.

His own.

The memories loosened.

Caelum pulled him farther away from the crack.

Aurel slammed his silver lantern against the ground.

"NOW!"

Lyra understood.

She dropped to her knees and pressed both palms against the Road.

Silver lines exploded outward.

The newborn Road connecting the realm of the Uncarried to the First World twisted.

Bent.

Then folded around itself.

The crack above them shuddered.

The white hand stopped.

For the first time...

The silhouettes reacted.

Every head tilted simultaneously.

The movement was perfectly identical.

The faceless woman clung tighter to Lucien's sleeve.

They saw us.

Aurel's face hardened.

"They already knew we were here."

No.

The Unremembered shook her head.

They knew I was here.

Her featureless face turned toward Lucien.

Now they know you are.

That was worse.

---

The golden-eyed child lifted the dawn lantern.

Its flame expanded into a protective circle.

The pressure of unwanted memory weakened.

Lucien could breathe again.

Barely.

He opened his eyes.

The white hand remained halfway through the crack.

Behind it stood countless figures.

Their bodies were humanoid.

Their clothing identical.

White robes without seams.

Colorless lanterns hanging from their left hands.

Their faces...

Lucien frowned.

They had faces.

That somehow frightened him more.

Each face was different.

Old.

Young.

Male.

Female.

But their expressions were exactly the same.

Peaceful.

Perfectly peaceful.

Astrael raised his weapon.

"What are they?"

Aurel whispered,

"The Everlasting."

The Hollow Sovereign's amber lantern dimmed.

"I thought they were a story."

"So did everyone."

"Convenient," Orion muttered.

Aurel looked toward him.

"That was intentional."

The black-masked Judge was gone.

The Judges were gone.

Serin remained in the awakened city.

They had entered this place believing their greatest danger was forgetting.

Now they stood before its opposite.

Lucien slowly picked up the Lantern of Welcome.

"What do they want?"

The Unremembered answered.

Everything preserved.

Lucien looked at her.

"That sounds..."

He stopped.

He understood.

"Everything."

She nodded.

Every thought.

Every moment.

Every mistake.

Every pain.

Tomorrow whispered,

"Forever."

Aurel nodded grimly.

"The First World discovered that memory could become a prison."

"The Everlasting believed the prison was paradise."

One of the silhouettes stepped forward.

The white hand withdrew.

The crack widened enough for a figure to pass.

Caelum raised his sword.

Aurel shouted,

"Don't attack!"

The figure entered.

An old man.

He looked harmless.

White hair.

Thin shoulders.

Bare feet.

A colorless lantern rested in his hand.

He smiled at Lucien.

"Hello."

The voice was gentle.

Lucien did not answer.

The old man looked around.

At the Uncarried.

At the extinguished lanterns.

At the faceless woman.

His smile faded.

"So much waste."

The golden-eyed child stepped in front of Lucien.

"You cannot have them."

The old man looked at him.

Recognition appeared.

"Little Dawn."

The child tightened his grip on the lantern.

"You remember me."

"We remember everyone."

"No."

The child's voice hardened.

"You remember information."

The old man's expression remained peaceful.

"There is no difference."

"There is."

Lucien stepped forward.

The old man's eyes moved toward him.

Something changed.

His calm expression disappeared.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Shock.

Then wonder.

He whispered,

"Sovereign."

Lucien was beginning to hate that title.

"My name is Lucien."

"Yes."

The old man smiled.

"We remember that too."

The colorless lantern brightened.

Lucien's mind exploded.

He saw himself.

Every version.

Every moment.

His childhood in the First World.

The Sovereign.

His death.

His rebirth as Lucien.

The House With the Lantern.

Every conversation.

Every choice.

Every fear.

Nothing missing.

The Everlasting had it all.

Lucien stared at the old man.

"You have my memories."

"We preserve what the world discards."

"Give them back."

The old man tilted his head.

"They already belong to you."

"No."

Lucien's voice became colder.

"They belong to me when I choose to remember them."

For the first time, irritation entered the old man's expression.

"Choice is why memory fails."

Lucien understood the conflict immediately.

Not good against evil.

Not light against darkness.

Choice against permanence.

The old man lifted his lantern.

"Come with us."

Caelum stepped forward.

"No."

The Everlasting ignored him.

"You have spent lifetimes searching for answers."

The colorless flame grew.

"We possess them."

Lucien said nothing.

"Your first name."

A flicker.

"Your parents."

Another.

"The beginning of the Roads."

Another.

"The truth of the First Sovereign."

Lucien's fingers tightened.

"The identity of the one who created the First Lantern."

Aurel inhaled sharply.

Even the dawn-child looked toward the old man.

He smiled.

"Everything you have lost."

He extended one hand.

"We can return it."

Lucien stared.

For one dangerous moment...

He wanted to accept.

Of course he did.

He had spent so long walking through mysteries.

Every answer created another question.

Every recovered memory revealed another hole.

He was tired.

The old man knew.

"You deserve to know who you are."

Lucien looked at the offered hand.

Then something tugged his cloak.

The Unremembered.

She stood behind him.

Faceless.

Nameless.

Terrified.

Lucien looked at her.

She had nothing.

No past.

No name.

No place.

And somehow...

She was still a person.

Lucien looked back at the Everlasting.

"I already know who I am."

The old man's smile faded.

"You don't."

"I know enough."

"You are incomplete."

"So is everyone."

"That is suffering."

Lucien shook his head.

"No."

"That's living."

The Lantern of Welcome flared gold.

The old man stepped backward.

For the first time, the colorless flame reacted to Lucien's light.

Not fear.

Disgust.

"Impermanence."

The word sounded like a curse.

Lucien smiled.

"Exactly."

The golden flame expanded.

The crack began closing.

The Everlasting beyond it moved.

Thousands of hands reached forward.

Aurel shouted,

"Lyra!"

"I'm trying!"

Silver Roads wrapped around the opening.

Caelum drove his sword into the gray ground.

The Hollow Sovereign added his amber flame.

Tomorrow and Cael raised their lanterns.

Astrael grabbed Orion.

"Do something useful."

"I've been waiting my entire life to hear that."

Orion reached into his pack.

Everyone expected a weapon.

He removed the decorative pillow.

Astrael stared.

"No."

"Trust me."

"I absolutely do not."

Orion threw it.

The pillow struck the Everlasting old man directly in the face.

Silence.

Everyone stared.

Orion pointed.

"He stopped concentrating."

He had.

The colorless flame flickered.

Lucien reacted instantly.

He raised the Lantern of Welcome.

Gold exploded forward.

The old man was thrown backward through the crack.

The pillow went with him.

Orion gasped.

"My pillow."

Astrael grabbed him.

"Let it go."

"It had emotional value!"

The crack slammed shut.

Silence returned.

For several seconds...

Nobody moved.

Then Tomorrow began laughing.

Lyra followed.

Cael tried not to.

Failed.

Even Lucien laughed.

Orion looked deeply wounded.

"A hero has fallen today."

Astrael stared at him.

"It was a pillow."

"It supported the neck."

The laughter spread.

Small.

Exhausted.

Human.

Exactly the kind of thing the Everlasting would remember forever...

And never understand.

Then the Unremembered suddenly touched Lucien's hand.

Everyone became quiet.

Something had changed.

A tiny mark had appeared on his palm.

A white circle.

Perfect.

Aurel saw it.

All humor disappeared from his face.

"No."

Lucien looked at the mark.

"What?"

Aurel grabbed his wrist.

"They marked you."

The Hollow Sovereign approached.

"For what?"

Aurel looked toward the sealed sky.

His expression was grim.

"They don't preserve everything automatically."

"They need a living anchor."

Lucien understood before Aurel finished.

"Me."

"Yes."

The golden-eyed child stared at the white circle.

"They can follow him now."

Caelum drew his sword.

"Can we remove it?"

Aurel shook his head.

"Not here."

"Where?"

Aurel hesitated.

"The Archive."

The Hollow Sovereign became still.

"You cannot be serious."

Lucien looked between them.

"What is the Archive?"

No one answered.

The Unremembered began trembling again.

Lucien felt her grip tighten.

Finally, Aurel spoke.

"The place where the Everlasting keep everything the universe has ever forgotten."

Lucien looked at the mark on his palm.

"Then we go there."

Caelum stared at him.

"That is quite possibly the worst idea you've ever had."

Aurel slowly shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Aurel's expression had become strangely distant.

"The worst idea he ever had..."

He looked at Lucien.

"...was building it."

And somewhere beyond the sealed sky, inside a library larger than worlds, an ancient door opened.

For the first time in nine thousand years...

The Archive recognized its creator.
