Chapter 84: Judgment of Shadows
The whisper did not fade.
It multiplied.
"Judgment has begun."
Every shadow in the clearing repeated the same sentence, each a fraction of a heartbeat behind the last until the words became an endless tide washing through the forest.
The soldiers of Valen remained frozen where they had fallen.
Their bodies still breathed.
Their chests still rose and fell.
Only their shadows had abandoned them.
Lucien tightened his grip on the First Lantern.
The silver flame answered.
Instead of growing brighter, it grew calmer.
Its light no longer pushed against the darkness. It simply existed, unwavering, as though reminding the world that a single flame was enough to define the meaning of night.
Caelum noticed first.
"Don't force it."
Lucien frowned.
"I wasn't."
"Good."
The Hollow Sovereign smiled faintly.
"That is why it chose him."
One of the shadow figures tilted its featureless head.
"No choice."
Its voice sounded like stone dragged across stone.
"Correction."
The nearest shadow lunged.
It crossed twenty paces without taking a step.
Astrael met it head-on.
His blade cut through the creature's chest with enough force to split an ancient oak.
The shadow divided neatly into two identical figures.
Both continued forward.
"...That," Orion muttered, "is extremely unfair."
Astrael changed his stance immediately.
"They are not bodies."
Cael lifted the small wooden lantern Alden had carved for him.
Its tiny golden light flickered.
One of the divided shadows hesitated.
Only for an instant.
Lucien saw it.
"So they react to light."
"No," the Hollow Sovereign corrected.
"They react to remembrance."
Before Lucien could ask what that meant, Tomorrow stepped forward.
She held neither weapon nor shield.
She simply looked at the nearest shadow.
"I remember your face."
The shadow stopped.
Its smooth features trembled.
For a heartbeat, the outline of a frightened young soldier appeared beneath the darkness.
Then it vanished.
The creature screamed.
Not in pain.
In confusion.
The silver flame leapt from the First Lantern, brushing gently across the shadow's chest.
Darkness peeled away like mist beneath morning sunlight.
The young captain of Valen collapsed onto the forest floor, gasping for breath.
His shadow returned beneath him.
Lucien stared.
"We don't destroy them."
Caelum nodded once.
"We return what was stolen."
The remaining shadows hissed in unison.
"Interference."
"Correction denied."
The earth beneath the clearing cracked.
Not from force.
From absence.
The soil itself had forgotten how to remain whole.
Lyra knelt beside one of the fractures.
Ancient road markings glowed beneath the broken earth.
Her breathing caught.
"The Roads are underneath everything."
She reached toward the symbols.
The moment her fingers brushed the stone, memories flooded through her.
Travelers laughing around forgotten campfires.
Merchants singing as wagons rolled east.
Children racing along white roads beneath skies filled with seven stars.
A woman carrying a lantern through endless rain.
Someone waiting.
Always waiting.
Lyra cried out and pulled her hand away.
Blood ran from her fingertips.
Not red.
Silver.
Caelum's eyes widened.
"The Roads have accepted her."
The Hollow Sovereign looked genuinely surprised.
"I didn't expect that for another century."
"I dislike sentences that end with 'another century,'" Orion said while ducking beneath another attacking shadow.
Astrael grabbed him by the collar and pulled him clear as a blade of darkness sliced through the place where he had been standing.
"You complain too much."
"It helps."
"It doesn't."
"It helps me."
Even now, Lucien found himself smiling.
Only briefly.
The moment passed as another shadow reached for Lyra.
Lucien moved without thinking.
The First Lantern swung in a smooth arc.
The silver flame touched the creature's hand.
It froze instantly.
Then...
It spoke.
Not with the harsh collective voice from before.
With the trembling voice of a child.
"...Mother?"
The clearing went still.
Lucien's heart tightened.
The shadow looked around as though waking from a terrible dream.
"I..."
Its body dissolved into drifting silver light.
Not destroyed.
Released.
The light rose through the trees before disappearing into the afternoon sky.
The Hollow Sovereign watched silently.
"So that is your answer."
Lucien lowered the lantern.
"I don't understand."
"You think your purpose is to defeat what the Roads lost."
He shook his head slowly.
"But every soul you return weakens the thing hiding behind them."
A distant roar echoed across the valleys.
Not from the forest.
From the direction of the seventh star.
The sky darkened despite the sun remaining high overhead.
The silver flame trembled.
For the first time, Lucien felt fear from the lantern itself.
It was warning him.
Not of the shadows.
Of something approaching.
Caelum looked east.
His expression hardened.
"It found us."
"What did?"
He did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the Hollow Sovereign.
"We cannot fight it divided."
The Hollow Sovereign sighed.
"I knew this conversation would arrive eventually."
Lucien looked between them.
"What conversation?"
Neither replied.
Instead, both men looked at him with identical expressions.
It was unsettling.
Not because they resembled one another.
Because they resembled him.
Caelum spoke first.
"When your soul was divided, the Roads believed separation would preserve balance."
The Hollow Sovereign finished the thought.
"They were wrong."
Lucien felt the silver flame pulse.
"You expect me to trust him?"
"I expect you to survive," Caelum answered.
The Hollow Sovereign stepped forward.
For the first time since their meeting, his smile disappeared completely.
"If we remain separate, the Seventh Road will consume both of us."
"And if we don't?"
"It will only have one target."
Lucien frowned.
"You mean..."
Caelum nodded.
"The division must end."
Silence settled over the clearing.
Even the shadows hesitated.
Lyra looked from Lucien to the Hollow Sovereign.
"You mean they become..."
"Whole," whispered Tomorrow.
The word carried unexpected sorrow.
Orion scratched the back of his neck.
"I have the uncomfortable feeling that becoming whole will not be painless."
The Hollow Sovereign laughed quietly.
"No."
"It won't."
The silver flame suddenly stretched upward.
Not toward the seventh star.
Beyond it.
Far beyond it.
Into a darkness that existed outside the heavens themselves.
For a single heartbeat, everyone saw it.
A colossal lantern hanging in the void.
Its flame was extinguished.
Around it floated six broken chains.
And beneath the silent lantern...
Something opened its eyes.
A voice older than the Roads themselves drifted across creation.
"I have found my Lantern Bearer."
The First Lantern shattered into a thousand pieces of silver light.
Lucien instinctively reached for them.
Instead of falling away, every fragment rushed into his chest.
His heartbeat stopped.
For one impossible instant...
The world forgot his name.
