Chapter 85 - 84: Demonic Frenzy
Lei Yang’s ability was just like his surname—related to lightning. He Xiaotian had known this ever since he saw him shatter a piece of paper with one palm strike at Liu Rui’s house.
’Captain Su, on the other hand, is much more interesting. Shadows, is it?’
Hiding in darkness, melting into shadow.
’What a convenient ability.’
It had incredible potential for concealment, escape, reconnaissance, and even assassination.
"AHHHHH—"
A sky-piercing scream came from within the village. Someone must have been attacked by a Mirror Spirit.
"Dammit!!"
Lei Yang roared and shot toward the source of the sound.
He moved so fast that even He Xiaotian didn’t have time to open his mouth to stop him.
In an instant, the once-quiet village plunged into chaos.
"You should leave too. I can’t guarantee that if you fall for the Dream Eye’s Illusion Technique and attack me, I’ll go easy on you like I did with Zheng Peng," He Xiaotian said grimly, looking at the three of them.
Hearing this, the corners of Zhao Lei’s and Zhou Yun’s mouths twitched. They glanced at Zheng Peng, who could barely stand even with the two of them supporting him, and winced.
’So *that’s* what you call going easy on him?’
’Anyone who didn’t know better would think Captain Zheng had killed your father and stolen your wife!’
The two of them opened the car doors and quickly helped Zheng Peng inside, laying him flat on the back seat.
Then they got into the driver and passenger seats and drove out of the village.
They also opened their communication channel to call the city Cleaner headquarters and request more backup.
Meanwhile, He Xiaotian hefted his twin hammers and walked out from the inn.
Strolling along the gravel paths of Zhou family Village, he kept turning his head to look at the houses lining the streets.
For some reason, the fact that Liang Kun had gouged out his own transplanted Dream Eye to send a message before he died felt utterly absurd to him.
’Are the communication methods between fiends really that primitive?’
"Help!"
From the house on his left came a cry for help filled with pure terror.
He Xiaotian turned to look, his brow furrowing slightly.
The *Secret Dream Observation Achievement Method - Dharma Eye Section* hadn’t just given him +5 Spirit and +5 Illusion Technique Resistance.
It also gave him +5 Perception and +5 Insight.
Although he couldn’t fully grasp the true situation inside, he could still sense that something was wrong.
It didn’t matter what was inside. If it was an innocent victim, so be it.
But if it was some kind of fiend, He Xiaotian wasn’t worried.
’If they had the power to kill me, would they be resorting to tactics?’
"BANG!"
He Xiaotian kicked the door to pieces and saw a Mirror Spirit climbing out of a mirror.
The familiar red clothes, the familiar figure, and the familiar tears of blood.
"BOOM!"
Without a word, he charged forward and brought a hammer down hard.
The Mirror Spirit, along with the mirror itself, shattered instantly. Cyan flames erupted, burning it to nothing.
[Ding! You have slain a Mirror Spirit and gained 8,000 Experience Points.]
"Ma’am, it’s alright now."
He Xiaotian walked over, seemingly to comfort the old woman who looked to be in her seventies.
"Tha—"
Before she could finish her word, she was met not with a warm embrace, but with a flaming iron hammer.
"BOOM!!"
The old woman, along with her wooden bed, was smashed to pieces.
’Do you take me for an idiot?’
’How would a normal person react to seeing someone wreathed in cyan flames?’
’They’d at least scream their lungs out for him to stay back!’
The flames were incredibly hot; an ordinary person wouldn’t be able to stand it.
Standing more than ten feet away was bearable, though you’d be drenched in sweat at most.
But within ten feet, the heat from the cyan flames was enough to warp the very air.
’Fine, let’s say you didn’t think to move away. I could assume you were too scared to react.’
’But once I got close, shouldn’t there have been a scream from being suddenly burned by the high temperature?’
’Besides, you’re over seventy. You saw a blood-soaked fiend crawl out of a mirror.’
’Not only did you not faint on the spot, but you still had the lung capacity to shout for help?’
In short, the old woman’s act was riddled with flaws.
Admittedly, He Xiaotian was no cop, much less a detective.
He was just an ordinary college student.
But you couldn’t just treat him like a complete moron!
[Ding! You have slain a Ghoul and gained 50 Experience Points.]
...
’A fiend worth a measly 50 Experience Points dares to act so presumptuously with me?’
"If the cry for help here was a trap, then wasn’t the earlier scream the same?" He Xiaotian’s heart sank. ’This is bad. It looks like Lei Yang and Captain Su are in trouble. The source of that earlier sound must be the ancestral hall in the center of Zhou family Village.’
He didn’t dare to delay. He immediately used his Qinggong, Eight Steps Chasing Cicada, and dashed away frantically.
Under the moonlight, only a black shadow could be seen flashing and weaving across the gravel streets.
"Help!" "Help!"
Everywhere He Xiaotian passed, people were crying for help.
He turned a deaf ear to all of it.
’If a Mirror Spirit wanted to kill a defenseless old person, would it give them time to react?’
’Absolutely not!’
’They would have been killed before they even knew what was happening.’
’Like hell you’d have time to scream for help!’
’I’m afraid there are no living people left in Zhou family Village.’
It would be a lie to say He Xiaotian wasn’t shocked by this discovery.
Now it seemed that everything that bastard Liang Kun did before he died was probably all a deception.
For all he knew, those bastards might have already performed the ritual long ago.
’Gouging out his eye to send a message was likely a smoke screen, designed to mislead everyone.’
"Sigh... I’m really not cut out for these schemes and plots. All these tacticians are a dirty bunch."
In just over ten seconds, He Xiaotian arrived at the Zhou family’s ancestral hall.
The first thing he saw was a field of ruins.
A shattered gate, charred and broken walls.
Only the old hall itself stood intact within.
In front of the hall, Lei Yang was struggling to hold on. Dozens of Mirror Spirits were attacking him in waves, leaving him exhausted.
Savage bolts of lightning spread out in all directions.
A black shadow occasionally flashed out from beneath Lei Yang’s feet, blocking the attacks he couldn’t dodge in time.
"CREAK!"
The two Qing-dynasty-style wooden doors of the hall opened, and five figures in black robes emerged from within.
"Zhou Zheng was a waste. Liang Kun was a waste as well," the person in the center said softly. There was no resentment in his tone; it was as if he were talking about something that had nothing to do with him. "The last one is here. Let’s begin."
A figure behind him nodded and waved a hand.
"THUD!" "THUD!" "THUD!"
Three things resembling man-eating flowers broke through the hard flagstones and burst up from the ground.
Then their huge mouths opened wide, spitting out three people covered in slime.
"Zheng Peng! Zhao Lei! Zhou Yun!"
"SMACK!"
Unlike Lei Yang, who cried out in alarm, He Xiaotian just slapped a hand to his forehead.
’You city Cleaners are seriously cursed!’
’Every time I run into these three, they’re either beaten unconscious or completely unable to fight back, barely managing to protect themselves.’
’What happened to not slacking off?’
’How is this any different from before?!’
He Xiaotian was starting to think he should just give in to Lei Yang and join the Cleaner organization.
’How much money am I losing by doing all this free labor for them all day?’
Of course, he was just venting.
