Chapter 62 - 61: A Spine-chilling Smile
He Xiaotian blinked as he read the news notifications first thing in the morning.
Having been involved in the whole affair from start to finish, he knew full well this was just a smokescreen put out by the officials.
Of course, it wasn’t entirely wrong to call the giant crocodile an extremist organization.
In fact, these non-human beasts were even more terrifying than any so-called organization.
After all, the members of those groups were still human, made of flesh and blood.
He Xiaotian got out of bed, washed up, and stood in front of the mirror, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
His old clothes now fit him like children’s wear.
His pants from last night, in particular, were one step away from becoming baggy shorts.
"CRACK CRACK CRACK..."
Standing before the mirror, the bones all over his body began to crackle and pop.
In an instant, he transformed from a burly giant back into a 180cm young man.
This was a new discovery. He never would have thought that the Thirteen Grand Protectors’ Cross Training could actually alter his bone structure.
The only downside was that he couldn’t unleash his full strength while in his bone-shrunken state.
"Heh heh, a height of two meters is certainly a conspicuous marker. I wonder how anxious that group of people trying to investigate me will get," He Xiaotian said with a laugh. And just as he’d predicted, the Cleaners and Department 037 had made height a key criterion for their search.
They were organizing a city-wide search for all men who matched the height description.
Unfortunately for them, the final results would clearly not meet their expectations.
The paperwork for his ten-year-old used car hadn’t come through yet, so He Xiaotian had no vehicle to drive.
He didn’t bother renting one either. If you’ve never experienced Shanghai’s traffic jams, you’ll never know the meaning of despair.
Rather than get stuck on the road, it was better to just take the bus.
He Xiaotian planned to make a trip to the Nine Dragon Pillar to see if there were any opportunities to exploit.
Landing the final blow the night before last had netted him a massive gift package worth fifty thousand Experience Points.
It had directly triggered another system upgrade, granting him a storage space.
’If only there were a few more of those giant crocodiles, tsk tsk.’ He had the gall to think that. The Cleaners had spent ages bombarding the beast, only for him to shamelessly snatch the prize.
An hour later, at the intersection of the North-South Elevated Road, He Xiaotian saw the pillar. Unlike the others, this one was exceptionally thick. Its entire body was wrapped in stainless steel and bronze sculptures of dragons, gleaming with a brilliant, eye-catching golden light.
At first glance, there was nothing strange about it.
’Could someone have already dealt with it? A pity. There goes a source of income.’
He left the elevated road and headed straight for Shanghai Medical University.
’No big deal if the Nine Dragon Pillar is a bust. There’s still that weird school!’
The familiar café, the familiar server, and the familiar dessert he always ordered. He settled in and began to observe quietly.
"Huh?!"
Around noon, a strangely designed SUV drove into the Medical University.
It looked a lot like the cars those extraordinary individuals had been driving last night.
’Come to think of it, how many of these have I seen today?’
He had already spotted three just this morning while on the bus.
’Looks like the relevant departments are running a tight ship with their investigation in Shanghai.’
He Xiaotian sat in the café, waiting for the SUV to reappear.
One hour... two hours... three hours...
Finally, the strangely designed SUV emerged.
Seeing this, he immediately paid his bill and walked out.
He walked past the SUV, pretending to be a simple passerby.
In that brief moment, He Xiaotian caught the extremely thick stench of blood, along with a chillingly cold aura.
’There was a fight!!’
Putting on a curious expression, he turned his head for a glance at the vehicle.
On the rear windshield, a figure flashed past and vanished.
He Xiaotian saw it clearly. It was a woman, and in that fleeting moment, she smiled at him.
On her pale face, her two eyes were empty sockets, as if they had been gouged out.
Two streams of bloody tears ran down her cheeks, and combined with her smile, it created a horrifying, bone-chilling sight.
Cold sweat even broke out on his back.
The feeling was as if she was saying, ’I’ve got my eyes on you!’
If he weren’t certain that this SUV belonged to the authorities, He Xiaotian would have immediately whipped out his two Big Hammers and started swinging wildly.
’Didn’t find any easy pickings, but it looks like I’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest?’
He Xiaotian muttered to himself. He wasn’t afraid, not really.
After his strength had surged again yesterday, he would even dare to go head-to-head with a perfectly healthy giant crocodile.
"If you dare to come after me, I’ll turn you into Experience Points."
He narrowed his eyes and spoke viciously toward the departing SUV.
Afterward, he took a ride home to wait for the evil spirit.
Eleven p.m. The residential complex for Cleaner team members.
Lei Yang groggily got out of bed. Tonight, it was his team’s turn for patrol.
Nighttime was the peak period for special cases, so there could be no slackening.
Otherwise, evil spirits and strange entities would take advantage, leading to casualties and public panic.
"Sigh! For the safety of the people of Shanghai, we can’t afford to waste a single moment." As he spoke, he knocked on the door opposite his.
But after a long while, there was still no response from inside.
"Kids these days, always love to sleep in."
Taking a key from his waist, Lei Yang smiled and opened the door.
But the moment the door opened, his expression changed drastically.
The heavy stench of blood assaulted his nostrils.
"Xiaoyang!"
He rushed to the bedroom, kicked the door open, and then he saw it.
His team member, who had been with him for over half a year, was dead on the bed, brutally murdered.
His body had been hacked into more than a dozen pieces by a sharp weapon, and his eyes were missing.
From the empty sockets, two streams of bloody tears trickled down.
His face was horribly contorted.
One could only imagine the immense suffering he had endured before his death.
"Fuck!"
Lei Yang roared in fury. His body crackled as arcs of azure electricity sparked around him.
This was a sign of an extraordinary’s powers going out of control—he was on the verge of a full-blown outburst.
If he completely lost control, the destructive force would be comparable to a heavy weapon.
"Giggle giggle..."
From the mirror on the bedroom wardrobe came a series of laughs, as clear and pleasant as silver bells.
But combined with the corpse on the bed, it was utterly bizarre and unsettling.
Lei Yang’s eyes were bloodshot as he whipped his head around to look.
A young woman in a red dress was staring at him with a smile on her face.
Her empty eye sockets streamed with two lines of bloody tears.
Seeing Lei Yang look at her, the woman held out her right palm.
There, two eyeballs filled with endless terror rested silently in her hand.
"You fucking bitch!"
Lei Yang instantly recognized them—they were definitely his team member Xiaoyang’s eyes.
Unable to contain his fury, he raised a hand and summoned a bolt of lightning as thick as an arm, blasting it toward the mirror.
