107 Beyond the Rift
I remained rooted in place, drawing every strand of quintessence I could into my body despite the agony threatening to tear me apart. Behind me, the Spirit of the World Tree continued to expand with majestic grandeur, its colossal trunk thickening while countless emerald branches reached across the darkened heavens. Every pulse of quintessence that coursed through me flowed into that ancient spirit, causing its overwhelming presence to become even more oppressive.
Through countless experiments with my abilities, I had discovered a simple yet terrifying truth. Whether it was qi, mana, or quintessence, any spell or technique I possessed could be forced beyond its natural limits by feeding it greater amounts of energy. The drawback was equally severe. My body had never been meant to withstand such reckless excess.
A violent cough escaped my throat, followed by warm blood that splattered across my robes. Crimson tears blurred my vision as blood seeped from my eyes, yet I refused to stop. Above the lake, the enormous sphere of darkness held aloft by innumerable writhing tentacles continued to swell with frightening speed.
Through my blood-soaked sight, streaks of brilliant silver flashed across the battlefield like falling stars, severing every tentacle that attempted to reach either me or the surrounding forest. Hu Gang was honoring our agreement, although I suspected he had reasons beyond merely protecting me. His sword danced ceaselessly through the air while the imprisoned monstrosity fought against the colossal roots of Entanglement that continued to bind its grotesque body.
The creature released a maddening shriek that echoed across both heaven and earth. "DeStroY... DeStroYyyy! DEstRoY! I wiLL deStRoY aLL oF YoUuuUu!" Its distorted voice sounded less like speech and more like countless broken throats screaming in unison.
Every severed tentacle immediately divided into two, each becoming even more violent than the last. The battlefield grew increasingly chaotic as their numbers multiplied without end. Hu Gang still carved through them with astonishing precision, but even his immortal swordsmanship could not continue forever. At this rate, the endless tide would eventually overwhelm him through sheer numbers alone.
Pain erupted throughout my body as fresh streams of blood burst from random patches of skin. Wherever blood flowed, tangled roots forced their way through my flesh before blossoming into vibrant flowers that drank deeply from my life force. The flowers were beautiful, yet they bloomed upon suffering itself. I clenched my teeth until I tasted iron.
"Just... a little bit more," I whispered to myself.
A familiar chill settled against my back as Nyx embraced me from behind. Her shadowy form wrapped around me with surprising gentleness, shielding me from the horrors surrounding us. At her command, countless Shadow Elementals emerged from pools of darkness, intercepting the abominations that crawled from the inky lake before they could reach me.
"My lord," Nyx murmured softly beside my ear, "you do not have to push yourself this far. We can retreat. There is no shame in surviving today. Lady Mab herself would approve of such caution."
I managed a weary smile despite the blood running down my face. "Retreat?"
She nodded firmly. "There will always be another opportunity. This battlefield isn't worth sacrificing yourself."
I slowly shook my head.
"No. This is one of my favorite camping spots. I like this lake." I tightened my grip on my staff and stared directly at the nightmare rising from its depths. "So you can forget about abandoning it."
For a brief moment, silence lingered between us before Nyx sighed in quiet resignation. She already knew there was no changing my mind.
I raised my staff toward the heavens, channeling the immense ocean of quintessence that threatened to burst from every vein within my body. The weight pressing upon my shoulders became almost unbearable, as though the world itself had decided to rest atop me. Only then did I notice something deeply unsettling. The Spirit of the World Tree had begun merging with me. Half my body remained human, while the other half had fused with ancient bark and living vines. The left side of my face unraveled into thorn-covered roots that slowly peeled away from my flesh without causing fear. It felt strangely... natural.
A savage grin spread across what remained of my human face.
"Wild Shape: Primal Nature Spirit."
Power exploded outward.
My muscles expanded beneath my skin as overwhelming strength surged through every fiber of my being. My flesh darkened into a pitch-black hue veined with elegant streaks of ivory. My eyes narrowed until their pupils became thin predatory slits, while my hair cascaded into a flowing silver-white mane that billowed behind me like moonlit waterfalls. My face twisted into something no longer entirely human, transforming into a porcelain-white demonic mask adorned with monstrous fangs. Towering antlers erupted from my forehead, stretching proudly toward the sky. My staff enlarged alongside me, becoming a colossal weapon worthy of my new stature. From my back unfurled an immense emerald cape that rippled like living leaves in the wind, while my robes reshaped themselves into natural armor woven from bark, vines, and hardened wood. Thick leaves intertwined with brilliant blossoms circled my neck like an ancient ceremonial mantle. Even my shadow disappeared completely, as though existence itself no longer recognized it.
When the transformation settled, I stood at nearly twice my original height, my enlarged frame radiating an overwhelming aura of untamed wilderness. Every heartbeat resonated with the endless rhythm of forests that had existed long before civilization.
Nyx stepped away, gazing up at my transformed figure with unwavering faith.
"Good luck, my lord," she said with a gentle smile. "I'll quarantine the lake. Those creatures won't leave these waters while I still possess strength."
Her form dissolved into countless drifting shadows before disappearing entirely.
"Thank you," I replied sincerely.
The lake suddenly erupted.
Famuroen's grotesque body rose higher from the black waters as its countless eyes fixed upon me with unrestrained malice.
"HoW dARe aN inSecT sEt itS GAze uPoN mY BoDy! I S-ssHaLL deSssTrOy YoUuu~!"
I inhaled slowly before resting the enlarged staff upon my shoulder.
"How about no?"
With a single wave of my staff, the heavens answered.
An enormous sphere of concentrated sunlight materialized high above Famuroen. It rivaled the monstrous sphere of darkness in both size and presence, blazing with radiance so intense that night itself seemed to recoil. Golden flames churned endlessly beneath its brilliant surface, illuminating every mountain and every tree for countless miles.
At the very same moment, I spoke two quiet words.
"Natural Order."
The colossal sphere of darkness vanished without resistance. There was neither explosion, collision, nor struggle between opposing forces. It simply ceased to exist, erased from reality as though the world itself rejected its presence.
Through the Voice of the World, I felt Famuroen's utter confusion ripple across its alien consciousness. It could not comprehend what had happened. The creature had expected a contest of overwhelming power, yet its greatest weapon had disappeared before such a contest could even begin.
It never received the chance to understand.
The Sunlight Orb descended.
Its impossible brilliance engulfed the heavens before crashing into the lake with the fury of a newborn star. Golden fire exploded across the black waters in an unstoppable tide, vaporizing waves, consuming darkness, and spreading into a blazing inferno that transformed the cursed lake into a sea of incandescent flame.
Through the Voice of the World, I heard a voice that transcended language itself. It did not enter through my ears but resonated directly within my soul, carrying grief so profound that even my heart trembled alongside it.
"It hurts... it hurts so much..."
The world's cry was faint, exhausted, as though it had endured an eternity of torment.
I tightened my grip around my staff. "Everything is going to be fine now."
Silence followed, and the endless cries of the world abruptly ceased, leaving behind a stillness unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was almost as though the world itself had forgotten how to speak.
"...You... can hear me?"
Its voice returned, softer than before, filled with quiet disbelief.
"Yeah."
A gentle warmth spread through the land beneath my feet.
"...Thank you..."
The simple words carried neither grandeur nor divinity. They were merely the heartfelt gratitude of a wounded world. As my consciousness continued merging with the world around me, countless scenes unfolded before my eyes.
I saw Mab.
Her authority over the Four Seasons had divided her existence into four manifestations that raced toward the cardinal directions. Winter marched across frozen landscapes, Spring blanketed ruined lands with life, Summer burned away the advancing darkness, while Autumn gathered countless refugees beneath golden forests. Above the Hermit Sage Forest floated Mab herself, standing before the towering Spirit of the World Tree as she desperately held back the creatures that had slipped through Nyx's quarantine.
Nyx herself had become a blur of living shadows. Wherever a new rift attempted to tear open reality, she was already there. Countless Shadow Elementals reinforced her barricade as she tirelessly sealed every fracture before more horrors could emerge.
Farther away, the Serenity Cliff Sect had transformed its mountain into an impregnable fortress. Elders and disciples stood shoulder to shoulder atop cliffs and terraces, unleashing waves of sword qi and techniques against the encroaching abominations. Others had abandoned the mountain entirely, boarding ships upon the great river as they retreated toward the Touch Grass Sect.
Hu Gang remained at the very center of the storm.
Silver sword light flashed relentlessly through the sky as he carved apart one tentacle after another. Dark sorceries rained upon him from every direction while malformed eyes opened across the writhing limbs, each gaze carrying dreadful curses capable of rotting flesh and spirit alike. Lips split open along the tentacles, whispering blasphemies that sought to unravel his mind, yet his sword never slowed. Even beneath the endless assault, he continued advancing one slash at a time.
Beyond the battlefield, I saw Freedom City.
The Touch Grass Sect, the Willow Order, and Freedom City's cultivators worked with remarkable discipline. Endless streams of civilians poured through the gate teleportation array connected to the Sky Stone Cave. There was fear, confusion, and sorrow, yet there was no panic. Every cultivator understood their duty.
Elsewhere, Hao Lei charged through burning villages with Xuanwu at his side.
The colossal divine beast shattered advancing monsters with every step while Hao Lei gathered survivors beneath Mab's guidance. Together, they carved open safe passages toward the evacuation routes, refusing to abandon even a single frightened child hidden beneath collapsing homes.
While witnessing the world through its own senses, I suddenly felt a familiar presence settle upon me.
Mab.
Though separated by countless miles, our eyes met through the world's consciousness.
"I've prepared something enormous," she said calmly. "Big enough to give you an opening."
I instinctively examined Famuroen through Druidic Insight once more. Every path I could perceive unfolded before me, and they all ended in failure. No matter how I rearranged the countless futures before my eyes, none ended with Famuroen's death.
It simply refused to die.
The only realistic outcome was forcing it back.
"Wo Li," Mab's voice became solemn. "Buy me a few seconds."
Before I could answer, dozens of enormous spheres of darkness materialized above the battlefield, and then hundreds. Without warning, they shot in every direction indiscriminately. The mouths lining the tentacles stretched into grotesque smiles while rows of jagged teeth clattered together, mocking every desperate struggle below.
Hu Gang vanished beneath streaks of silver as he intercepted every sphere flying toward Serenity Cliff Sect. Each collision split the heavens with thunderous explosions.
The few heading toward me dissolved into shadows as Nyx's barrier intercepted them before they could descend.
I drove my staff into the earth.
"Entanglement!"
The lake exploded.
Roots thicker than mountains erupted from beneath the swampy depths, wrapping around every visible tentacle before coiling tightly around the edges of the rift itself.
"Steel Forge."
The living roots instantly transmuted into dark metallic restraints, their bark becoming harder than immortal steel as they crushed the writhing limbs beneath unbearable pressure.
I raised my staff once more.
"Winter Sonata."
A mournful melody drifted across the battlefield. It was neither sung nor played by mortal instruments. The world itself became the orchestra.
An endless winter descended.
The lake froze over within moments, layer upon layer of primal frost imprisoning everything beneath its crystalline surface. Frost consumed every tentacle it touched, yet the imprisoned monstrosity continued struggling violently beneath the frozen prison.
Then...
A pressure unlike anything before descended upon heaven and earth. Far beyond the Hermit Sage Forest, the towering Spirit of the World Tree surrounding Mab dispersed into countless emerald petals that filled the sky.
Her voice echoed throughout the entire world.
"Immortal Art... Four Seasons of the End."
Spring.
Summer.
Autumn.
Winter.
The four seasons converged into a single arrow that surpassed mortal comprehension. It pierced the heavens before descending directly into the center of the rift. The moment it struck, reality itself screamed.
Famuroen released an earth-shattering howl before unleashing a furious torrent of ancient curses.
"KHA'SSUL VORAKH! NETH UL'SHAR! VORR KETHA'NUL!!"
Though I understood none of its ancient tongue, I needed no translation to grasp its hatred. The arrow consumed everything in its path. Tentacle after tentacle rapidly withered into shriveled husks, their immense vitality draining away within seconds.
Yet something resisted.
An invisible force clung stubbornly to their existence, refusing to allow complete annihilation. Even reduced to dying remnants, the tentacles continued writhing with unnatural persistence.
I slammed my staff against the frozen ground once more.
"World Fall."
The space surrounding the rift distorted. Gravity multiplied many times over. The frozen lake groaned beneath the impossible pressure before immense cracks spread across its surface.
I refused to stop.
"Dark Murky Swamp!"
The frozen lake instantly dissolved.
Water, earth, and decay merged together as the lake transformed into an enormous swamp that swallowed the weakened tentacles, dragging them relentlessly toward the collapsing rift.
"Nyx!"
My voice echoed across the battlefield.
"Close the rift! No matter what happens, don't let it remain open!"
"I understand, my lord!"
Nature's Stride carried me forward, and the world blurred.
In the next instant, I stood directly above the rift.
I didn't hesitate.
"Elemental Orb!"
A sphere of condensed elemental energy exploded against Famuroen's body.
Another followed.
Then another.
Dark curses and spheres of annihilation rushed toward me from every direction.
"Lifepulse!"
Vitality surged through my body as wounds instantly regenerated.
"Verdant Barrier!"
Living vines intercepted the first barrage.
"Azure Barrier!"
A wall of rushing water shattered the second.
Between every defensive spell, I continued attacking without pause.
"Sunlight Orb!"
"Razorjade Leaf!"
"Fireball!"
"Raindrop Edge!"
"Explosion!"
"Stonebreak Sword!"
"Steel Forge!"
"Elemental Orb!"
"Call Lightning!"
The battlefield vanished beneath an endless storm of spells. Every heartbeat summoned a new incantation, and every breath unleashed another devastating attack. Gradually, slowly, Famuroen began to retreat. Its monstrous body thrashed with desperate fury, but the relentless barrage drove it farther and farther back across the rift’s threshold.
I pursued without hesitation, each Nature’s Stride carrying me closer. My spells struck with ever greater precision, hammering into the creature’s defenses.
Then a massive tentacle exploded through the smoke. Before I could dodge, it coiled tightly around my body. Instead of fighting it, I smiled. The beast had unwittingly hurled me exactly where I wanted to go.
I rode the momentum straight toward the shrinking rift.
“Explosion!”
The spell detonated in a roaring blast.
“Explosion!”
Another eruption tore through the surrounding flesh.
“Explosion!”
Again. And again. And again.
The chain of explosions propelled us both through the collapsing boundary. I barely registered the moment it happened, but I had crossed the threshold.
Beyond the rift… I saw.
