Beast Sovereign : Taming the Endless Realms

Chapter 53 - The Memory Trial

The shadow of the Archivist stood motionless.

Its cloak of darkness rippled without wind.

The temple seemed to hold its breath.

No one dared to speak.

Then, the Archivist raised a single finger.

"I shall ask you one question, Beast Sovereign."

"If your answer is false..."

"Your memories will become mine."

Kai stepped forward.

"I don't bargain with people who steal lives."

The shadow chuckled.

"You misunderstand."

"I do not steal lives."

"I preserve history."

"I simply decide..."

"...what history deserves to remember."

---

The Book of Infinite Beasts suddenly burst open.

Its pages glowed with blinding golden light.

A new notification appeared.

---

Before Kai could react, the world around him dissolved.

The Temple of Eternal Ash vanished.

Selene...

Ignis...

The Crimson Flame Fox...

Everyone disappeared.

Kai found himself standing in the Awakening Academy.

Students laughed around him.

The great crystal stood exactly as it had on the day he first awakened.

A familiar voice echoed through the courtyard.

"Weakest beast in history!"

The crowd erupted with laughter.

Kai turned.

There stood his younger self.

Alone.

Humiliated.

Holding the tiny Crimson Flame Fox.

The fox looked frightened.

Exactly as it had on that day.

---

Another voice echoed behind Kai.

"Do you regret it?"

The Archivist appeared beside him.

Still faceless.

"If you wished..."

"I could erase that day."

"No humiliation."

"No suffering."

Kai looked quietly at his younger self.

"I don't regret it."

The Archivist tilted its head.

"Why?"

"Because that day gave me my first companion."

The frightened fox looked up at the young Kai.

Their eyes met.

The contract formed once again.

Golden light spread across the academy.

The illusion cracked.

---

The scene changed.

Kai now stood inside the Frostfang Valley.

He watched himself freeing the Frostfang Sabretooth.

The Archivist whispered,

"You spared your enemies."

"They may betray you."

Kai smiled.

"Maybe."

"But trust always begins with someone taking the first step."

Another illusion shattered.

---

One after another...

The Archivist forced Kai to relive every important choice.

Saving Ignis.

Trusting Selene.

Accepting Rowan.

Helping Kael.

Believing Caelum.

Every time, the same question followed.

"Would you choose differently?"

Every answer remained the same.

"No."

---

Outside the illusion...

The Book glowed brighter with every memory Kai protected.

The pages stopped trembling.

Ancient golden runes appeared along its cover.

Inside the illusion, the Archivist remained silent for a long time.

Finally, it spoke.

"You are... unusual."

Kai folded his arms.

"I'm just stubborn."

"No."

The shadow slowly shook its head.

"The others doubted themselves."

"You do not."

Kai frowned.

"The others?"

"The previous Beast Sovereigns."

A heavy silence followed.

"For thousands of years..."

"I tested each one."

"Some failed."

"Some surrendered."

"Some believed my lies."

"But you..."

The glowing white eyes narrowed.

"...continue walking forward."

---

The illusion dissolved.

Kai returned to the Temple of Eternal Ash.

Only a single second had passed.

Selene rushed to him.

"Kai!"

"You disappeared!"

"I'm alright."

He looked towards Noctis.

The corruption had weakened further.

80%... 72%... 65%...

The Heart Flame burned brighter than ever.

Noctis let out a hopeful cry.

---

But the victory was short-lived.

The entire volcano shook.

A deafening roar echoed from deep beneath the mountain.

Cracks spread through the temple floor.

Black crystal erupted from every direction.

Even the Archivist's projection turned towards the darkness.

For the first time...

Its calm voice carried surprise.

"...Impossible."

A second voice answered from below.

Older.

Far more powerful.

"You have manipulated history long enough."

The black crystals exploded.

A pillar of radiant white fire pierced the heart of the volcano.

The chains binding Noctis shattered one by one.

Within the brilliant flames...

The silhouette of another Divine Beast slowly appeared.

It was neither phoenix...

Nor dragon...

Nor wolf.

The Book of Infinite Beasts displayed only a single line.

Unknown Guardian

Record Missing

Reason: Never Recorded

Even the Book had no knowledge of the being rising from beneath the volcano.

And for the first time since the journey began...

The Archivist took a single step backwards.
