One Piece : Kenpachi Template

Chapter 278

The thought struck Zaraki's mind like a stone dropped into perfectly still water, yet what spread through him was not chaos. It was an almost glacial calm.

The world did not literally disappear, but everything irrelevant fell away from his attention.

Sound, color, temperature, and the distant roar of the spectators became background noise.

Mihawk's unreadable face ceased to matter as a face and became a collection of useful details: the line of his shoulders, the angle of Yoru, the position of the cross-shaped dagger, the pressure beneath his feet, and the openings created whenever one weapon committed before the other could recover.

Fear was useless here.

Hesitation was worse.

Nozarashi slammed into Yoru again.

BOOM—!!

Armament Haki reinforced Mihawk's grip while dark-gold Reiatsu crawled along Zaraki's released blade. The ground beneath them groaned and cracked outward from the collision, but Zaraki did not give back even half a step.

He drove through the pressure.

His next movement looked faster than what he had shown at the start of the duel, though his physical strength had not suddenly increased.

The difference came from efficiency.

His feet traveled less distance, his shoulders no longer telegraphed the same openings, and every recovery fed directly into the next attack instead of resetting from nothing.

Mihawk's pupils tightened.

'He's changing.'

Yoru became a seamless black curtain in his hands, intercepting cut after cut with terrifying precision.

The cross-shaped dagger appeared only in the tightest range, slipping through the smallest gaps whenever Zaraki crowded the larger blade.

Mihawk saw one such opening and sent the dagger toward Zaraki's throat.

Zaraki did not retreat.

He brought Nozarashi down toward Mihawk's skull.

For the briefest fraction of a second, both men understood the trade being offered.

Zaraki was willing to give his throat if Mihawk accepted Nozarashi through the head in return.

'This lunatic!'

Mihawk abandoned the perfect killing line. The dagger changed direction into a horizontal cut as he retreated, while Yoru rose to catch the descending cleaver.

CLANG—!!

The force transmitted through Yoru numbed Mihawk's hands and drove him several steps backward across the broken ground.

Zaraki was already following.

A broad dark-gold slash erupted from Nozarashi and climbed toward Mihawk like a wall being thrown upright beneath him. Mihawk let out a restrained growl, closed both hands around Yoru, and cut upward.

BOOOOM—!!

The flying slash shattered. Dark-gold fragments and stone dust filled the space between them, briefly flooding Mihawk's vision.

He pushed his Observation Haki as far as he could and found the opening hidden inside the chaos.

'Now.'

His left wrist flicked.

The cross-shaped dagger left his hand and flew at an angle difficult for the naked eye to follow, aimed directly at Zaraki's unprotected abdomen.

It carried none of Yoru's tremendous mass, only the timing, precision, and ruthless economy of the world's greatest swordsman exploiting the smallest possible gap.

Mihawk expected Zaraki to evade or at least recoil.

Zaraki stepped forward instead.

Schk!

The dagger buried itself deep in his abdomen. Hot blood immediately soaked through his clothes.

Mihawk's heart sank.

'Wrong.'

The knife had already left his hand, so there was nothing to pull back.

What chilled Mihawk was the realization that Zaraki had accepted the wound deliberately.

Stepping into the dagger placed him inside the timing Mihawk had expected him to respect, buying a fraction of a second at the price of steel in his stomach.

Zaraki raised his golden eyes.

There was no panic in them.

Only the terrible certainty that he had obtained the opening he wanted.

He lowered Nozarashi toward his waist and settled into an iai stance.

His right foot dug into the broken ground while every usable part of his body compressed toward the first movement.

Thunder Breathing tightened that initial acceleration into a violent burst.

Dark-gold arcs crawled along Nozarashi's chipped edge as Zaraki gathered his Reiatsu into the blade instead of wasting it around his entire body.

For one instant, man and sword seemed perfectly aligned.

"Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash."

There was no shout after the technique's name, only movement.

Zaraki exploded forward along the ground.

The draw slash itself was almost brutally simple.

He compressed everything he could still control into one line: the acceleration of the first step, the weight and appetite of released Nozarashi, the placement Mihawk had hammered into him on Kuraigana, and the timing Musashi's swordsmanship legacy had finally begun turning into instinct.

BOOOOOOM—!!

Yoru came up in time.

The black blade caught most of the slash.

Not all of it.

Mihawk was hurled backward as the remainder tore through the rocky ridge behind him.

The old assessment ground erupted in shattered stone, and part of the abandoned fortress wall collapsed under the concentrated shockwave.

Dust rolled hundreds of meters across Kalles while the surrounding ships pitched hard enough that crews grabbed rigging and shouted for more distance.

The attack was devastating, but it remained focused on the battlefield.

It did not swallow the surrounding sea, erase Kalles, or force Shanks and his crew to invent some collective Haki wall just to survive the aftermath.

When the dust finally began to thin, a black figure could be seen embedded in the broken face of the ridge.

Dracule Mihawk.

Blood covered one side of his body, and the arm that had taken the worst of the impact hung low, badly strained and cut.

His clothing had been torn and scorched by stone and pressure, but Yoru remained in his grip.

"He... survived it."

One of the swordsmen on the Red Force tightened his hand around his weapon until the knuckles paled.

Shanks did not answer immediately.

His expression had become more serious than at any earlier point in the duel, and his gaze stayed fixed on Mihawk rather than the destruction around him.

"Look at his eyes," Shanks said quietly.

Something had changed there.

Mihawk was hurt, but the world's greatest swordsman had not been broken.

If anything, the impact had stripped away the last trace of detachment he had carried into the fight.

Loose stones shifted in the shattered ridge.

Mihawk planted Yoru against the ground and forced himself free.

Blood ran from his mouth when he coughed, and his breathing was rougher than before, yet those hawk-like eyes never left Zaraki.

"You..."

His voice sounded like metal scraping against metal.

"What exactly are you?"

Zaraki did not answer immediately.

He was already walking forward, one step at a time, Nozarashi dragging low beside him.

The dagger remained buried in his abdomen, blood ran down his side, and the shoulder Linlin had wounded before this duel had begun was burning beneath the bandages.

Released Nozarashi continued drinking from Reiatsu reserves that had never fully recovered from Totto Land.

The pain seemed distant as long as Mihawk remained standing.

One step.

Then another.

Each left a dark mark of blood on the stone.

Mihawk watched him approach with an expression that had moved beyond simple surprise.

Zaraki looked less like an inexhaustible machine than a man who had simply decided that collapsing was something he could do after the duel.

The cross-shaped dagger shifted with Zaraki's next step.

Clink.

It worked itself loose and dropped onto the scorched stone near his feet.

The tiny sound was enough to break the narrow tunnel of concentration inside Zaraki's head.

The rest of the battlefield returned all at once—the sea wind, the salt, the smell of shattered rock, the distant waves, and then the pain.

Every injury he had been ignoring seemed to arrive together.

"Ngh..."

His body went rigid for half a heartbeat. Zaraki lowered his eyes and saw blood pouring more freely from the hole in his abdomen.

'Oh.'

**[Ding!]**

A cold mechanical notification sounded privately inside his mind.

**[Detected: qualitative improvement in swordsmanship during extreme combat.]**

**[Swordsmanship Legacy: Miyamoto Musashi — integration stabilized.]**

**[Technical combat experience successfully assimilated into the host's personal swordsmanship.]**

The notification ended there.

His Zaraki Kenpachi template remained at one hundred percent synchronization; what had changed was the swordsmanship he had learned and assimilated through the duel, not the amount of template power available to him.

Zaraki barely paid attention to the system.

His gaze had already returned to Mihawk.

The world's greatest swordsman was looking back at him differently now.

The earlier shock had settled into scrutiny, curiosity, and finally recognition.

Mihawk was no longer looking at an uncontrollable monster who happened to carry a sword.

He was looking at a swordsman.

Zaraki could feel the savage noise inside himself receding like a tide.

What remained was cleaner and sharper: the weight of Nozarashi in his hand, the distance separating them, the condition of Mihawk's guard, and the simple knowledge that the man ahead was still capable of cutting him.

His fingers tightened around the hilt.

That last attack had still relied on tremendous speed and power, but now Zaraki understood more clearly where technique had shaped the strike and where brute force had merely covered his mistakes.

Mihawk straightened Yoru.

Zaraki raised Nozarashi.

Neither man looked finished.

Perhaps the real duel of swordsmanship was only beginning now.
