Chapter 148: Sane Man
Damien approached with his Therizon beside him. It was the size of an overgrown chicken, a far cry from the enormous creature that had nearly torn the frozen wasteland apart, but despite its humiliating appearance, it was still his most powerful undead. At least, his most powerful undead that actually obeyed him.
Damien pushed the thought of the undead Lich to the back of his head. There was no point thinking about that lazy bastard right now. He had more important things to deal with, such as figuring out why everyone was staring at him like he had just returned from the dead.
Although, technically, he had.
He stopped in front of the group and looked at the familiar faces. Their expressions were strange, almost as if they were expecting something from him.
"Since when does your little circle of wannabes want me around?"
Ryan almost chuckled.
He quickly closed his mouth, forcing himself to suppress the laugh..
Elias, however, felt helpless from Damien’s comment. He didn’t quite think they were wannabes. He took his role as protector and leader of the camp very seriously, and hearing Damien reduce their little group to a circle of wannabes was almost insulting.
Still, he didn’t bother responding.
Vincent was far more careless with his reaction. He simply waved his hand dismissively, a sly smirk resting on his face as though Damien’s insult hadn’t bothered him in the slightest.
Damien’s eyes briefly moved between them before settling on Andrea. She shook her head and spoke plainly.
"It has been confirmed that Naomi is dead. It is my greatest regret that I was not there to fight alongside her till the very end, but nonetheless. She died a hero."
Damien’s expression changed, he didn’t immediately interrupt her. Andrea’s words were simple, but there was something about the way she delivered them. It was like she genuinely regretted not being there.
"That bitch definitely didn’t die a hero, look at poor Vincent, all fried up... Huh?".
His attention shifted to Vincent.
Damien stared at him for several seconds before finally noticing the pristine suit he was wearing. It was completely immaculate, without a single wrinkle on it.
Naomi’s Dormant ability had evaporated Vincent’s previous suit. Yet somehow, he had gotten himself an entirely new one.
And it looked almost exactly like the old one, Damien’s eyes narrowed slightly as he continued staring.
Vincent seemed to notice his gaze. He slowly turned towards Damien and flashed him a smile.
It was a perfectly ordinary smile on the surface, but Damien would quite literally describe it as a psychotic attempt to seem friendly.
Andrea, seemingly unconcerned by the strange exchange between them, continued with her short speech.
"The best we can do now is carry on her legacy, and who better to do so than Damien, the undead."
Damien had his hand over his mouth in shock, his eyes widened as though Andrea had just bestowed upon him the greatest honour imaginable. However, everybody except Ryan could tell that the reaction was completely faked. Damien wasn’t even particularly convincing.
"I’m so flattered that you all unanimously chose me to sit at the Round Table. Hmm, we’re getting a new Round Table, right? It really adds to the oppressive mystique of the Round Table members."
Damien looked around as though he was already imagining the table in question, apparently taking the entire thing far less seriously than he should have.
Elias shook his head.
"We didn’t really vote on a new Round Table member. The selection was made based on strength. It was between you, Jackson and Claire. All the others weren’t nearly as close to the level of power you’ve all displayed."
Damien froze up for a moment.
Elias was expecting him to ask about his role next, perhaps appreciate the other Round Table members or at least acknowledge that he had just been given an important position within the camp.
Instead, Damien quickly shattered those expectations.
"Who’s Jackson, and how strong is he exactly?"
Elias was taken aback. Was Damien scouting out the competition after it had already ended?
It was almost as if the moment Damien heard there were other powerful people around, his first instinct wasn’t to celebrate his new position but to figure out exactly where everyone else stood.
Ryan pulled at the laces of his hoodie and answered.
"Jackson is one of the most powerful Awakened in camp. He’s mostly low-key and doesn’t mingle with everyone else. Well, except for Vincent. He’s like one of his followers."
Vincent folded his arms, seemingly uninterested in the conversation.
"I don’t keep weaklings around unless they’re capable of entertaining me, and whatever Jackson is, I assure you, I’m not into it."
Damien blinked. "You mean a man?"
Vincent continued with a cold snort. "Although I must admit, he was starting to grow on me. I was planning to kill him, but as you can all see, he’s alive and doing particularly well."
Everyone went oddly quiet.
Fortunately, the group was a short distance away from the rest of the survivors, so nobody else heard Vincent’s disturbing admission of intended murder. It wasn’t even the fact that he had said it out loud for all to hear. It was the fact that he seemed genuinely convinced killing Jackson would have been well within his rights, as though it were nothing more than a reasonable decision he had simply chosen not to follow through with.
Ryan’s expression became slightly awkward, while Elias looked like he was struggling to decide whether he should even acknowledge what Vincent had just said.
Damien, however, was the only one who wasn’t particularly affected by Vincent’s declaration. He wasn’t too hinged himself.
"So he’s not strong enough to be here, but still powerful enough to be considered?"
Damien asked casually, completely ignoring the disturbing part of the conversation.
Vincent smiled knowingly.
"Jackson is a powerful high-level Awakened, but still a level below us. You don’t need to set up contingency plans against him."
Damien nodded slightly, seemingly satisfied with the answer.
Elias, on the other hand, was clearly about to lose his mind.
"Am I the only sane person here?".
