Chapter 5: Born to Die, Chosen to Live
I left my private courtyard and headed to the Patriarch's Chamber which is in the center of the clan's large estate. As I moved from one area to another I couldn't stop gasping and looking around like a countryside bumpkin who moved into the city new, heh but don't forget about my acting skills, I remained poker-faced outwardly of course while within me I was shocked by the sheer magnitude of this estate and the overflowing wealth of it.
*Nah this won't be my focus for now after all I have a mystery box to solve out.* I thought within but my mind shifted briefly to the event that happened in the hall yesterday, how that girl wanted to break up with me.
*Hmm, sure that one is a classic fantasy trope.* I chuckled to myself.
I reached the inner circle of the clan's estate since it's divided into three parts, the first of course being the outer ring which contains the residences of the maids, guards and stewards of the clan and where low-tier demonic beasts are kept, the second the middle ring where my courtyard is located and other young prodigies and middle-position elders are found — oh, before I forget, the Spine which almost cost me my life was found there. And finally the inner ring, what's special about it is that's where all elder-position residents are found and where the courtyard of the Son of God of the clan is — which I later found out is the Clan's chosen heir apparent, next in line to the Clan Leader position, and this is also where the Main Hall is located and the Patriarch's chamber, and that's the hall I am currently heading to.
Oh my God!!!
*What the hell is this, oh mother of mercy!!!*
I know you will be wondering why I'm shouting, but you can't really blame me, right. Just imagine yourself standing in front of a towering wall or gate that pierces the sky and you can't see the end of it. You see why I'm gasping — and this wall is not a plain one made of mud or mortal stones, nah, far from it, this one is heaven on earth and it smells of both extravagance and antiquity, and across the wall you can see murals and carvings that depict dragons of various types and shapes, and guarding this gate are four humongous dragons that soar towards the nine heavens. But do you know when this gets creepy — if you are standing a mile from the wall you won't even see any of this, only when you get closer can you see it. I later found out that the inner ring exists in another dimension, like a folded space.
*So have you seen why you will enjoy this world, this is just the tip of an iceberg and you are already screaming, once you have power and strength you can have plenty of this and even more.* The System chuckled and said.
*Heh hold it there, have you ever heard me complaining about going back to my miserable life, I was just testing you to see how you work, can't someone joke around here.* I fired back.
*LIAR.* It bickered.
*That's your own business, but is there any silent feature or off switch, I don't think I have your time now.* I responded.
The System remained quiet, much to my pleasing.
When I got closer to the gate, those mythical beasts of my kind looked at me briefly, then one of them poked toward me with a claw — my body's size was like a grain of sand being touched by an invisible whale, right, only the heavens know how I remained standing then without freaking out.
Immediately it touched me, I disappeared and arrived in front of the Patriarch's Chamber hall. It looked like those beings had also read my thoughts, which made it even easier for me.
I approached the gate and knocked gently, the gate opened, and the next thing I knew, I was standing in front of my father, the Patriarch. *Is everything teleportation these days, huh,* I said within me.
I looked at the Patriarch, my dad, and saw him sitting on a chair carved from stone materials which I don't know the name of, but I'm pretty sure a single fragment of it could wage war among the forces of the mortal realm. I couldn't see his face since it was covered by a mountain of files and reports from the clan. I pitied the old man for a few seconds and coughed.
"Patriarch, I request an aud—" I couldn't finish my statement, cut off before I could.
"Zaitian," he called out, with an authoritative voice that carried a little tiredness in it.
"Yes, Patriarch." I responded, not knowing what was currently on his mind.
"I have told you many times that whenever we are alone you should not address me as Patriarch but rather as your father. Am I not your father, eh, Zaitian?" He questioned me.
I was a bit surprised and caught off guard by his question but was able to hide it without showing any expression or emotion that would give me away.
"Father, I have a question that needs your answer, and I'm sure you already know why I'm here." I said.
"I do. But why do you want to know so much about this?" He said.
He looked at me, trying to observe my reaction, which I didn't show any of, but I still responded with a cold voice. "Because I want to know my fate, and if I die, I will know the reason. I don't want to be clueless about my fate. Dad, I'm tired. Please tell me. I want to know."
"Zaitian, have you heard of the words 'Falling Star Omen'?" He said, while still reading the report he was holding all this while.
"No, Father." I responded, still wondering where this was heading, because I couldn't remember ever asking him about stars or something like that.
He looked at me for a while and said, "Have you been paying attention to your tutors? Because your knowledge is pitiful."
When he said that, I chuckled within myself, because the original Zaitian apparently didn't like anything related to history. I remained quiet because I didn't even know what to say to him again.
"Oh, that means you haven't been paying any attention," he said, still looking at me, then continued, "This is an anomaly that happens rarely. It doesn't have any specific time or period, but according to the sightings found and the events that happen after its appearance, its sighting shows that something ominous will happen at the place where it appears. But unfortunately, at the moment you were born, it showed up, which bothered the clan. But after the divination of an ancestor who is proficient at divination, it showed that you wouldn't live past a month, and even if you eventually survived it, your providence and fortune would be tinged with bad luck, and things ominous will always happen wherever you go. This is why you have been isolated from the world since you woke up from that coma, so that nothing bad would happen to you. Do you see now why you were isolated?" He said, still reading a report.
Hmm.
"Father," I began
