Chapter 289: Setting Out
Watching the Little Black Cats on the island gradually emerge, singing and dancing happily, Zhang Wenda felt it wasn't enough.
A red sun once again materialized in Zhang Wenda's palm and rose into the sky, causing the temperature of the entire island to climb.
But the moment this red sun rose, Zhang Wenda felt something was different. He didn't know what it was, but he could just feel it wasn't the same as before.
An impulse surged uncontrollably from within him, an impulse to do *something*.
Emerging, Zhang Wenda took off, chasing in the direction Hu Maomao had just gone.
He knew he had no reason to save Tan Yougen. He also knew he wouldn't be of much help if he went. But in such a dangerous place, why had he let Hu Maomao go ahead without a second thought, without a shred of worry?
'It's like I'm being controlled by the colors now, as if I'm not Zhang Wenda but the embodiment of blue. I can't let this out-of-control blue manipulate me! I am myself, and I absolutely will not be swayed by some external force!'
"Where are you going now?" Song Jianguo watched Zhang Wenda run off, exasperated. She cupped her hands around her mouth in displeasure. "Hey! I'm not going! I'm pregnant! I need to take maternity leave!"
Zhang Wenda couldn't be bothered with her and sped forward. He was fast, and it didn't take long for him to catch up to Hu Maomao outside the quartermaster's department. "I'm here to help!"
Hu Maomao gave him a surprised look, then seemed to understand his thoughts. She said nothing, simply tossing him a black arm guard that covered nearly his entire upper arm. On it were three large digits written in dark red, blue, and yellow: 507.
"Put it on. It's for identifying friend from foe during large-scale operations. We're joining temporarily, so this will keep our own people from accidentally hurting us."
After quickly putting the arm guard on his left shoulder, Zhang Wenda asked, "How do you know where Old Tan and the others are now?"
Hu Maomao reached up and took off the tinfoil pot on her head, shaking out her slightly messy hair. "Don't forget what I do. If I couldn't even find this out, I'd have been wasting my time all these years."
"So where are they now?" Zhang Wenda asked immediately.
"The Internet World." Zhang Wenda's heart sank when he heard that. The location of the fight alone implied a great deal.
Hu Maomao could see what was on Zhang Wenda's mind. "You don't have to go if you don't want to. You're right, this doesn't have anything to do with you."
"Just open the door. If you're going, how can I not? Even if I'm not worried about Old Tan, I'm worried about you."
Then, Zhang Wenda silently added a thought, 'This is also related to my yellow. That reason alone is enough.'
Her heart warmed at his words. 'The guy's gotten a lot better at talking than he used to be.'
She took out a flashlight and began to draw a door on the wall with the Spectral Technique, but after several attempts, she still failed.
"What's wrong?" Zhang Wenda asked.
Hu Maomao shook her head. "I don't know. It seems like they've locked down the thought-stream on the other side. I'll try another way."
As she continued drawing, Song Jianguo came after them again with her clowder of cats.
Zhang Wenda looked at her in surprise. "Weren't you pregnant and on maternity leave?"
Song Jianguo angrily kicked him. "You weren't going to wait for me, were you?"
"Hey, damned cat, this is going to be a bit dangerous. Are you sure you want to come?"
Song Jianguo didn't say a word. Her body instantly split into six Little Black Cats that merged with the others, then transformed into a suit of armor, armed to the teeth, that leaped onto Zhang Wenda.
"You'll get a raise when we get back!"
"Excellent!"
Zhang Wenda cracked his neck. As the red in his heart surged, his body shot up, and his fingers elongated rapidly, finally transforming him into a scythe-wielding monster over three meters tall.
The armor made of Song Jianguo and the Black Cats quickly adjusted to his new form, even perfectly mimicking the arm guard.
When Hu Maomao's door finally opened, the fully armored Zhang Wenda crossed his scythes. The red light in his eyes flared, and his voice was filled with excitement.
"Just as I thought, I like red way more than blue! Let's see what's really going on here! What kind of stunt is Old Tan trying to pull?!" With that, he charged through without a moment's hesitation.
The moment he burst through, Zhang Wenda's head snapped up. He saw the sky filled with black text floating in mid-air, and the ground below was a total mess. This was a battlefield of absolute chaos.
Modern weapons, thought-forms, and all sorts of Qi Gong abilities were all clashing together here in a complete free-for-all.
He had just landed when a burst of intense gunfire erupted, and several bullets flew over, striking the black armor on his body.
Zhang Wenda blurred, charging straight at the enemy.
Faced with Zhang Wenda's approach, the man with the head of a lion dancer tried to run, but it was too late. With a flash of red light, the hot gun barrel was sliced in two, and his body immediately met the same fate.
Seeing that Hu Maomao had also come through, Zhang Wenda quickly ran back to provide cover for her. "Maomao! It's too chaotic in here! Use your ability to figure out where we are and what the current situation is!"
"Okay!" Hu Maomao immediately began to quickly search the memories in the minds of nearby enemies.
Meanwhile, Zhang Wenda prevented anyone from getting near the concentrating Hu Maomao. Wherever he went, he took all the red from within his enemies' bodies, and along with the red, he also took their heads.
Fortunately, thanks to the arm guard, Zhang Wenda could tell friend from foe, so there was no risk of him attacking his own side.
However, Zhang Wenda now noticed a detail. Among the people wearing arm guards, besides a few from 507, the majority were from 702. It was obvious that Bureau 702 was also participating in this operation.
"Wenda!"
Hearing her voice, Zhang Wenda quickly returned to Hu Maomao's side, grabbing her by her clothes and slinging her onto his back. "Which way?"
"Nine o'clock!"
Zhang Wenda took off without hesitation. At first, everything was fine, but just as he was about to leave the battle zone, one of the characters filling the sky suddenly came crashing down. It was the character for "eat," several stories high.
As Zhang Wenda used his speed to dodge the impact, he saw the "mouth" radical of the "eat" character rapidly expand and try to devour him.
After Zhang Wenda quickly dodged, more characters rained down from the sky: the character for "blade," the character for "death," and the character for "kill."
As Zhang Wenda moved rapidly, dodging these unknown things, a trembling sound came from the ground.
That giant mobile fortress from before was steadily approaching.
