Chapter 64: Persistent System
Ye Lingyue was caught off guard.
She didn’t even dare to turn around.
[It’s all your fault!] She immediately blamed the System.
Meanwhile, the System put on an innocent look on its face. It felt wronged again.
Why does it have to take blame for something that it never did? Its host was truly fierce...
"Yue’er?" Ye Lingrui called out again, concern apparent in his voice.
Ye Lingyue bit her lip and turned around. "Third Brother..."
Her voice shook slightly because she had been quite emotional. She stared at Ye Lingrui’s tall figure and sighed.
"It’s cold, why are you going out at such a late night?" He asked.
They had their freedom now and didn’t need to sneak around anymore. If she wanted to hunt, she could do it in the daylight instead of night.
She sniffled. The night’s temperature was terribly cold but when it came to the day, the sun was hotter than ever.
Sighing, she pinched her nose. "Let’s go back."
[Host, you are going to do the quests, right?] The System braved itself again, chattering in her head.
It knew that with Ye Lingrui’s presence, its host wouldn’t suddenly become angry again.
[Don’t worry, most of them are super easy, and they can help you survive in these harsh living conditions. You can even get amazing rewards...]
The System was right. She was trying to rein in her temper.
Ye Lingyue’s temples throbbed and she furrowed her brows.
[Noisy!]
She didn’t respond to the System anymore no matter how relentless it was. The pair of siblings went back to the village.
Along the way, Ye Lingrui didn’t ask anything anymore. Silence settled between them, making her feel rather uncomfortable.
"Did my voice wake you up, Third Brother?" She asked carefully.
His sudden appearance often caught her off guard. Obviously, he was as trained in martial arts as Ye Lanxi, but when it came to sneaking up on someone, he was really good at it.
"I am a light sleeper."
She nodded and mumbled under her breath. "Sleeping powder can change that."
"Did you say something, Yue’er?" Ye Lingrui interrupted her thoughts.
She coughed and looked away. Oops, she accidentally said it out loud.
"Nothing... I didn’t say anything. Must have been the wind, Third Brother," she muttered innocently.
When she looked up, she met his pair of smiling eyes. She pursed her lips and fell silent. Actually, she didn’t know whether Ye Lingrui could detect an entity like the System.
However, he actually couldn’t, right? She tried to convince herself, racking any reasonable explanation.
Then, she found one.
He was an ancient person, so something like the System must have been an entity beyond his imagination.
[Host, let’s do the quests. I can give you some examples...]
She frowned and ignored the System again. Too lazy to bother with it.
"Yue’er, Father and Second Brother will go find some wood to fix the holes in our houses tomorrow," Ye Lingrui began.
Ye Lingyue immediately started discussing with him about it, effectively helping her distract herself from the System’s non-stop chattering that almost drove her crazy.
In the next few days, she busied herself with helping the Ye family to rebuild the houses.
From the argument between the first branch and Steward Du last time, unsurprisingly, the former won the battle and now occupied a house not far from them.
Currently, Ye Lingyue was also still trying to accept the fact that she was stuck in the ancient times.
[Host, you can go back. You are not stuck...]
She pretended it didn’t exist.
The System also had been trying to get her to finish all sorts of quests. However, her experience with the previous system gave her trust issues and she wasn’t interested in playing along anymore.
As a result, the System was like an ant on a hot pan, extremely anxious.
No matter how it tried to persuade Ye Lingyue—to the point of bringing up some snacks from the modern times as rewards—she still clung to her stubbornness and didn’t give up at all.
"Oh, you are bringing back some wood." Zheng Huizhen suddenly came to their house with Ye Mingyuan in tow.
"Coincidentally, we need some wood to close the holes in our house." She muttered and pointed to the wood that Ye Chengde and Ye Lanxi had brought back.
"Ming’er, let’s bring them back," she told her son.
With that, the pair of mother and son picked the woods from the ground without even asking the owner.
Ye Lanxi was annoyed, but when he was about to stop them, Ye Chengde grabbed him and shook his head.
"Mother will live with them. The night wind is cold, so let them take the woods," he said to his son.
Even so, Ye Lingyue wouldn’t just sit by without giving them trouble. These people can also go to the forest to find woods themselves, why didn’t they do that?
They obviously only wanted to rob from their second branch and didn’t want to suffer from the effort.
She grabbed some pebbles and threw them to Ye Mingyuan’s feet.
"Ouch, hiss, it hurts!" He exclaimed and let go of his hold on the heavy wood, causing his mother to nearly stumble.
Since it was her favorite son, she restrained her temper and didn’t scold him.
[Teaching scumbags a lesson: 10 system points.]
Suddenly, she heard the system notifications and her mouth twitched. She didn’t deliberately do it, but...
The System was screaming like a groundhog in her mind.
[Host! I know I can rely on you. From the moment I saw you, you are the most talented host I have ever met!]
She rolled her eyes.
[I am your first host.]
The System coughed and stopped its flattery; Ye Lingyue’s words were right.
The silence didn’t last long.
[You have done a great job, Host! Continue with your hard work~]
There was a picture of a huge, smiley face on the System’s interface.
Ye Lingyue glanced at her twin brother thoughtfully.
[System, do you think my brother can detect your presence?]
