Project Odin
The Tier-1 Mana-Shield was a masterpiece of cosmic engineering.
From the outside, the ruined Sakura Subway Station looked exactly as it had for the last ten years.
It was a collapsed, irradiated tomb choked with rusted metal and mutated moss.
But inside the invisible fifty-meter dome, the air was pristine.
The suffocating pressure of Sector 4's quarantine zone was completely negated, leaving behind a dead, eerie silence.
Kaelen Cross sat on the rusted chassis of an overturned subway car.
In the dark, he meticulously cleaned the mechanisms of his heavy eighty-pound crossbow.
His body was a map of fresh trauma.
Even with Seraphina's corrupted holy magic knitting his fractured shoulder back together, the phantom ache of the Orbital Strike still burned deep in his marrow.
He didn't care.
Pain was just an indicator that he was still breathing.
A few feet away, Seraphina knelt on the cracked tiles, her greatsword resting across her lap.
She was meditating with her eyes closed.
She was trying to forcefully untangle a decade of magical lobotomies and manufactured Vanguard propaganda from her true memories.
Vespera was nowhere to be seen, having melted into the pitch-black shadows of the ceiling, sulking after Kael had reprimanded her.
The chat box hovered in Kael's peripheral vision, scrolling at a steady, relentless pace.
The cosmic entities were currently losing their minds over his insane survival rate, screaming in all-caps about his brutal combat style.
Suddenly, the ambient hum of the Mana-Shield violently hitched.
CLANG.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the pitch-black tunnel leading up to the surface.
Seraphina's golden eyes snapped open.
In a fraction of a second, the Fallen Valkyrie was on her feet.
Her battered silver armor clanked as she dropped into a flawless, lethal combat stance.
FWOOSH!
Her corrupted, jagged golden aura flared to life.
It illuminated the dark subway station in a harsh, flickering light.
"Hostiles," Seraphina hissed, raising her greatsword with white knuckles.
"Stand down, Sera," Kael grunted, not even looking up from his crossbow.

[User 'Star_Dust_69': BRO THE AURA ALONE IS MELTING THE CONCRETE! HOLD ME!]
SCREEEEEEECH.
The massive, rusted steel security shutter blocking the tunnel entrance groaned in agony.
Its manual override was violently forced open.
Sparks showered down onto the concrete as the heavy gears were stripped by a localized hacking sequence.
The heavy metal door slowly slid upward, stopping a mere three feet off the ground.
A heavy, incredibly oversized duffel bag was shoved through the gap first.
It hit the tiles with a deafening, metallic crash.

Then, a figure crawled under the rusted door.
She stood up, wiping a thick smear of black axle grease across her forehead.
It was a nineteen-year-old girl.
She was drowning in an oversized, neon-yellow synthetic jacket that practically glowed in the dark.
Her baggy cargo pants were covered in oil stains and frayed wires.
A pair of high-tech, glowing green augmented-reality goggles rested on her forehead, pushing back a mop of messy, dark hair.
Nyx. The Tech Phantom.
She stood in the center of the subterranean station, panting heavily.
Her chest heaving as she caught her breath.
She had just bypassed three overlapping Vanguard perimeter patrols and hacked a Class-A quarantine gate just to get here.
She looked up.
She saw Seraphina, the legendary Fallen Valkyrie, standing ten feet away.
Radiating an aura of world-ending holy fire.
She saw the towering, scarred silhouette of the Phantom Vanguard sitting on the train car.
His cold silver eyes pierced right through her.
Nyx froze.
Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She was standing in the presence of literal myths.
Ghosts that had shaped the entire history of the world before she was even old enough to drive.
She was completely, utterly awestruck.
So, naturally, she defaulted to being a total brat.
[User 'Zark': LMAOOOO THE TERROR SWITCHED TO BRATTY DEFENSE MECHANISM IN ZERO POINT ONE SECONDS!]
[User 'Star_Dust_69': BRO SHE REALLY WALKED UP TO A LIVING WAR CRIME AND SAID 'YOU LOOK LIKE SHIT' I AM SCREAMING 💀💀]
[User 'Weapons_Nut_44': Zero survival instinct. Absolutely zero. You love to see it.]
[User 'Point_Gamble_God': 1000 credits says the gremlin pisses her neon pants in the next five seconds 📉📉]
Nyx cracked her neck, popped a massive pink synthetic bubblegum bubble, and rested her hands on her hips.
"You look like absolute shit for a dead guy," Nyx stated, her voice dripping with forced, brash arrogance.
Kael's lips twitched upward into a faint, razor-thin smirk.
He didn't hate the disrespect.
In fact, it was the most refreshing thing he had heard all day.
"Good to see you too, kid," Kael rasped, sliding a titanium-tipped bolt into his quiver.
Before Nyx could respond, the temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero.
The shadows directly beneath Nyx's combat boots violently contorted.
Blink.
Vespera didn't fly. She simply teleported through the localized void.
The S-Rank Succubus materialized directly behind the hacker.
Her leathery obsidian wings wrapped completely around the teenager.
[User 'Succubus_Envy_99': YES! GET HER, QUEEN! NOBODY DISRESPECTS THE BOSS IN FRONT OF US 🥵🔪]
Nyx gasped, her breath catching in her throat.
The overwhelming scent of dark orchids and raw ozone flooded her lungs.
A glowing, razor-sharp pink heart-blade pressed exactly one millimeter against Nyx's carotid artery.
"And who is this filthy, neon trash bag?" Vespera purred into Nyx's ear.
Her demonic voice vibrated directly against the girl's skull.
Nyx's eyes went wide with pure, primal terror.
Her tough-girl facade shattered into absolute nothingness in a single heartbeat.
She tried to scream, but the crushing weight of Vespera's abyssal aura choked the words right in her throat.
"Vespera," Kael said, his voice completely flat.
He raised his right hand and casually snapped his fingers.
SNAP.
"Heel."
Vespera's crimson eyes flashed with sharp annoyance.
She dragged the flat side of her glowing blade down Nyx's cheek like a mock caress.
It left a burning trail of bitter frost across the girl's skin.
"You never let me play," Vespera pouted.
Her voice dripped with childish, petulant disappointment.
The demon dissolved into a thick cloud of purple mist, slipping straight back into Kael's shadow.
[User 'Succubus_Envy_99': NOOOO LET HER COOK! THE BRAT NEEDED A LITTLE BIT OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ðŸ˜ðŸ’”]
[User 'DragonBoredom': Absolute control. A beast trained to return to its master's side at a single sound.]
Nyx collapsed hard onto her knees, violently gasping for oxygen.
Her hands clawed desperately at her own throat.
"What... what the fuck was that?!" Nyx wheezed, her eyes darting like trapped birds around the dark station.
"Security," Kael replied, not even blinking.
Seraphina lowered her heavy greatsword.
Her corrupted golden aura flickered down as she stared at the shivering teenager.
"You brought a child to a warzone, Kael?" Seraphina asked, her brow furrowing with genuine, heavy concern.
Nyx's head snapped straight up.
"I'm nineteen, you glowing boomer," Nyx spat back.
She scrambled back to her feet, aggressively pulling down her neon jacket with shaking hands.
[User 'Zark': SHE CALLED THE FALLEN VALKYRIE A GLOWING BOOMER! I AM OFFICIALLY DEAD 💀🔥]
[User 'Star_Dust_69': THE AUDACITY ON THIS GIRL IS OVER NINE THOUSAND!]
She kicked the massive, terribly heavy duffel bag across the concrete toward Kael.
The canvas scraped loudly against the ruined floor.
"And I didn't come empty-handed," Nyx grinned through her fear.
"I brought the war."
Kael stood up slowly.
His heavy boots crunched hard on the dusty tiles.
He walked over to the bag, his cold silver eyes narrowing in the dim light.
"What is it?"
"I stripped the Vanguard R&D servers before I wiped my apartment and went dark," Nyx grinned.
A manic, sleep-deprived light danced wildly in her eyes.
She dropped straight to one knee and violently yanked the heavy zipper open.
The inside of the bag was packed tight with high-density shock foam.
Nyx reached deep inside.
She pulled out a weapon broken down into three separate, dismantled pieces.
With shaking, reverent hands, she laid them out on the cracked tiles.
It looked like a Vanguard heavy rifle, but nothing like the standard MK-IV Kael used to carry.
It was forged from a pitch-black, unknown hyper-alloy that absorbed the surrounding light.
It didn't even have a traditional barrel.
Instead, it featured two extended, parallel magnetic rails lined with complex, glowing magical circuitry that hummed with volatile energy.
[User 'Weapons_Nut_44': WAIT. WAIT A MINUTE. IS THAT... NO. NO WAY THEY ACTUALLY BUILT IT!]
"Project 'Odin'," Nyx whispered.
