The Unwanted Shadow(2)
But as he took his first step toward the tunnel exit, the world went dead silent.
The ambient temperature on the ridge didn't just drop, it plummeted to absolute zero in a single breath.
The faint, flickering orange glow from the distant magma river below was violently snuffed out, as if a thick blanket of liquid, consuming darkness had been thrown over reality itself.
Kael stopped dead in his tracks.
The E-Tier Shadow-Weave cloak around his shoulders, a piece of gear that had hidden him from a hundred high-level threats, suddenly felt completely useless.
Wearing it right now was like holding up a flimsy umbrella in the middle of a planetary hurricane.
Then, the scent hit his nose.
It wasn't the stench of rotting flesh, copper, or sulfur.
It was the overwhelming, intoxicating fragrance of crushed dark orchids, laced with a faint, terrifying undertone of raw, unmitigated ozone.
The atmospheric pressure grew so heavy so fast that Kael felt like he had been dropped directly onto the floor of a deep-sea trench.
His bones groaned under the sheer weight of the presence bleeding into the cavern.
Thump. Thump.
His heart hammered violently against his ribs, every single primal survival instinct screaming at him to run, to fight, to do anything to survive.
But his body refused to obey.
The shadows behind him didn't just shift. They physically tore open like wet paper.
"You're in a terrible hurry, little sniper," a voice whispered.
The voice didn't come from the air.
It bypassed his ears entirely, vibrating directly against his brain stem.
It was a voice made of dark velvet, honey, and razor blades.
Undeniably seductive, yet dripping with a lethal, cosmic arrogance that made Kael's blood run cold.
A pair of pale, flawless arms slid smoothly over Kael's shoulders from behind.
Fingers with sharp, obsidian nails gently traced the line of his collarbone, brushing right over his newly fractured injury.
The freezing touch sent a violent, agonizing jolt of pain through his shoulder.
But Kael didn't flinch. He didn't move a single muscle.
He could feel the soft, intoxicating warmth of her body pressing flush against his back.
He could feel the leathery texture of her massive wings wrapping around them both, creating a private cocoon of absolute darkness.
And, more concerningly, he could feel the razor-sharp, glowing pink heart-blade of her tail slowly coiling around his right thigh.
The tip of the demonic blade came to rest perfectly against his femoral artery.
One twitch, and he would bleed out in ten seconds.
Vespera floated inches from the ground behind him, gently resting her chin on his left shoulder.
He could feel her breath against his neck. It was freezing cold, yet it sent a strange, electric shiver down his spine.
"You stole my kill, human," Vespera purred, her crimson eyes glowing faintly in the pitch-black cocoon.
The cosmic chat feed in Kael's vision went completely, instantly dead.
Sixty-four thousand aliens stopped typing simultaneously.
They were holding their breath.
An S-Rank Void Succubus had just bypassed a thousand meters of physical space via localized shadow-teleportation and had a knife to the streamer's throat.
This was the end. This was where the arrogant, badass human finally broke down and begged for his life.
It was basic biology. Mortals froze when confronted by apex predators.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Vespera waited for the reaction.
She waited for the rapid breathing. She waited for the stench of human terror.
She waited for him to fall to his knees and plead for mercy.
She waited for the dopamine hit she always got when breaking a mortal's mind.
Instead, Kaelen Cross sighed.
It wasn't a sigh of fear.
It was a heavy, deeply exhausted sigh of a man who was already completely sick of dealing with bullshit.
Kael reached up with his left hand.
He grabbed Vespera's pale, flawless wrist.
And with sheer, physical force, he casually shoved her arm off his neck.
"Send me an invoice," Kael grunted, stepping out of her embrace without even looking back at her.
He didn't draw his weapon. He didn't drop into a combat stance.
He simply adjusted the heavy strap of his crossbow, rubbed his sore, aching neck, and started walking toward the tunnel leading out of the cavern.
The silence that followed was so profound it felt like the universe had completely crashed.
Vespera floated there, her arm still suspended in the empty air where Kael had casually shoved it aside.
Her luminescent crimson eyes were wide open, her mouth parted in absolute, stunned disbelief.
He had shoved her.
A mortal with a broken core had just physically swatted away the hand of a Void Succubus and told her to send an invoice.
It took exactly three seconds for the System chat to catch up to reality.
And when it did, it exploded with the absolute force of a supernova.

The golden numbers rained down across Kael's vision, but he completely ignored them.
He just kept walking, his heavy boots crunching rhythmically against the gravel.
Behind him, Vespera slowly lowered her arm.
The shock faded from her flawless face, instantly replaced by a deep, terrifying, and all-consuming obsession.
She had lived for millennia. She had conquered worlds, seduced emperors, and tortured legendary heroes until they broke.
Everyone feared her. Everyone wanted her. Everyone eventually crawled to submit to her.
But this mortal?
This scarred, broken, mud-covered sniper didn't give a single flying fuck about her existence.
He looked at an S-Rank demon and saw nothing but a mild inconvenience in his path.
"Fascinating," Vespera whispered, a dark flush rising to her pale cheeks.
She didn't get angry. She didn't attack him.
Instead, her leathery wings folded neatly into her back, vanishing into the shadows.
She didn't walk. She simply glided over the ground, closing the distance between them effortlessly and falling into step right beside him.
Kael didn't look at her. He kept his eyes locked straight ahead on the dark, damp tunnel.
"You're very rude," Vespera noted, her tail flicking playfully behind her, the pink blade cutting through solid stone stalagmites as if they were made of butter.
"I'm busy," Kael replied, his voice flat, dry, and dead.
"Busy doing what?" she asked, leaning in close, the suffocating scent of orchids wrapping around him again.
"Dying in the mud? You have a shattered core. Your soul is bleeding out. By all cosmic laws, you should have expired a decade ago."
"I'm stubborn," Kael muttered, stepping over a small fissure in the ground.
"You're anomalous," Vespera corrected, her crimson eyes scanning him up and down like a rare, priceless piece of art.
"You possess no magic, yet your aura reeks of slaughter. You look at a Behemoth, and you do not see a predator. You see a target."
"It was a big target," Kael said coldly. "Hard to miss."
"Do you know who I am, little sniper?" she asked, her voice dropping an octave, radiating a sudden, oppressive wave of dominance.
Kael finally stopped.
He turned his head slowly, his cold, silver eyes locking directly onto her glowing crimson ones.
He didn't shrink under her crushing aura. He didn't waver for even a fraction of a second.
"You're a high-tier abyssal entity," Kael stated, his voice completely devoid of emotion.
"You're suffering from severe planetary suppression. You're operating at maybe five percent of your total capacity, which is why a dumb rock lizard was tossing you around like a ragdoll."
Vespera's eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint flashing in her irises.
"And," Kael continued, leaning in slightly, his scarred face inches from her flawless, ethereal features.
"You're currently blocking my path to the elevator. So, unless you're planning on killing me right now, get the fuck out of my way."
The chat went completely silent again.
[User Zark: He's pushing it. He's definitely pushing it. She's going to rip his spine out.]
Vespera stared deep into Kael's silver eyes.
She looked for the bluff. She looked for the hidden terror, the trembling pupil, the accelerated heartbeat.
There was absolutely nothing.
He wasn't pretending. This mortal was completely, genuinely ready to throw hands with a god.
Suddenly, Vespera threw her head back and laughed.
It was a melodic, terrifying sound that echoed through the tunnel, causing the surrounding shadows to dance and warp violently.
"Oh, I like you," Vespera purred, her eyes shining with absolute delight. "I like you very, very much, Kaelen Cross."
Kael frowned. "How do you know my name?"
Vespera tapped a long, sharp fingernail against the empty air in front of her.
"The same way they do," she smiled, gesturing toward the invisible streaming camera.
"I am a creature of the Void. The Interstellar Network runs directly through my domain. I saw your little broadcast spike the algorithm."
She glided forward, circling him like a beautiful, lethal shark.
"I was going to kill you for stealing my prey," she admitted casually.
"But a quick death is so boring. And you... you are the most entertaining thing on this miserable rock."
She stopped right in front of him, floating inches off the ground to look him dead in the eye.
"I have decided,"
Vespera announced, her voice suddenly echoing with absolute cosmic authority.
"I am going to sponsor you."
