The Succubus in the Shadows(2)
Pebbles and dust rained down from the pitch-black ceiling a hundred feet above.
Kaelen instantly dropped his center of gravity, his hand instinctively gripping the stock of the Reaper rifle.
The air pressure in the gorge plummeted.
A wave of sheer, suffocating bloodlust washed over the area.
It was so thick, so impossibly heavy, that Kaelen could literally taste the sharp tang of iron on his tongue.
The tiny puddle of mana in his chest shrank back in primal, instinctive terror.
[WARNING!]
[ANOMALY DETECTED!]
[Rank-A Abyssal Entity detected in Sector 4.]
[Rank-S Demonic Entity detected in Sector 4.]
[Recommendation: FLEE IMMEDIATELY. SURVIVAL RATE: 0.0001%]
"Rank-A?" Kaelen whispered, his eyes narrowing.
Rank-A monsters were walking natural disasters. They required entire battalions of elite Vanguards, fully armed and coordinated, just to take down.
And a Rank-S? That was a myth. A literal world-ender.
Kaelen should have turned around and sprinted toward the cargo elevator. He had the keycard from Silas's ring. He could escape right now.
But he looked at the viewer count.
[Current Viewers: 28,500]
If he ran, he was just a survivor.
If he hunted, he was a god.
"System," Kaelen muttered, keeping his voice barely above a whisper. "Use 5,000 Cosmic Credits. Purchase Ocular Enhancement: Thermal/Aura Sight."
[5,000 Credits deducted. Augmenting optic nerves...]
A sharp, searing pain stabbed directly behind Kaelen's eyes.
He grunted, blinking away the blood-red tears that formed as his nervous system violently rewired itself.
When he opened his eyes again, the pitch-black darkness of the Abyssal Rift was completely gone.
The world was painted in vivid, shifting colors of thermal heat and magical auras.
He could see the cold blue of the stone, the fading yellow heat of Silas's corpse, and the massive, radiating pulses of energy coming from a mile deeper into the cavern.
Kaelen activated the Shadow-Weave Cloak, his thermal signature vanishing instantly.
He moved.
He didn't sprint; he glided over the uneven bedrock with the terrifying, silent grace of an apex predator.
He navigated the twisting, jagged tunnels for ten minutes, the tremors growing more violent with every single step.
Finally, the tunnel opened up into a colossal, subterranean chasm.
It was a cavern so massive that an entire city block could have easily fit inside it.
An underground river of glowing blue magma cut through the center, casting a hellish, flickering light across the jagged, towering walls.
And in the center of the chasm, two titans were clashing.
Kaelen threw himself flat against a high ridge overlooking the battlefield, roughly a thousand meters away.
He peered over the edge, his augmented eyes zooming in on the absolute chaos below.
The first entity was a Rank-A Abyssal Behemoth.
It was a towering, sixty-foot-tall nightmare composed of hardened volcanic rock, molten magma, and thick, pulsating black muscle.
It had four massive, tree-trunk arms ending in crushing obsidian fists, and a singular, massive, glowing orange eye in the center of its chest.
Every time it took a step, the entire cavern violently shook.
But it wasn't the Behemoth that caught Kaelen's attention.
It was the thing fighting it.
Flitting through the air like a localized blur of sheer, concentrated violence was a figure that defied human comprehension.
It was a woman. Or at least, she looked like one.
She had skin as pale as moonlight, contrasting sharply against the hellish glow of the blue magma.
A pair of leathery, bat-like wings sprouted from her back, wrapping her in a shifting cloak of liquid shadows.
Curving, obsidian horns crowned her head, and her eyes burned with a terrifying, luminescent crimson light.
But her most lethal feature was her tail.
It was a long, segmented whip of black armor, ending in a wickedly sharp, glowing pink blade shaped vaguely like a shattered heart.
[Entity Identified: Vespera - The Void Succubus]
[Threat Level: Unquantifiable]
She was mesmerizing. Terrifying. Incredibly seductive.

And she was losing.
BOOM!
The Behemoth swung a massive obsidian fist, creating a concussive shockwave that instantly shattered the stalagmites around them.
Vespera vanished into a cloud of purple smoke, reappearing instantly behind the beast's massive neck.
Her tail lashed out faster than the speed of sound.
Schwing!
The pink heart-blade sliced cleanly through the Behemoth's thick rocky hide, drawing a geyser of glowing, super-heated magma blood.
The Behemoth roared, a sound that threatened to rupture Kaelen's eardrums even from a thousand meters away.
It didn't care about the wound.
It violently spun its massive torso, backhanding the air where Vespera hovered.
The impact didn't hit her directly, but the sheer atmospheric pressure of the swing caught her wings.
CRACK!
Vespera was swatted out of the air like a fly.
She slammed into the jagged cliff face a hundred yards away, the impact cratering the solid bedrock.
A sickening crunch echoed through the cavern.
She fell to the ground, her wings drooping, coughing up a mouthful of pitch-black blood.
The Behemoth let out a victorious, deafening bellow.
It raised its four massive fists into the air, charging up a catastrophic, cavern-collapsing strike to flatten the demon completely.
[User Zark: Oh my god. The Behemoth is going to crush her!]
[User Star_Dust_69: That's a Void Succubus! They are incredibly rare! What is she doing down here?!]
[User Succubus_Simp_Zero: STEP ON ME DEMON MOMMY! Wait no, don't die! Someone save her!]
[User Horn-Goddess-Fan: Damn, those curves even while bleeding out... If she survives, she's definitely main waifu material.]
[User Gloop: RIP demon mommy. It was good while it lasted.]
Kaelen watched the scene unfold from a mile away.
He looked at Vespera, broken, bleeding, yet breathtaking against the cold rocks.
He looked at the towering, indestructible Behemoth preparing to end her life.
And then, he looked at his viewer count.
[Current Viewers: 32,100]
A slow, dark, utterly insane smile spread across Kaelen's bloodstained face.
"Chat," Kaelen whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, unfiltered dopamine.
"Let's steal a goddamn kill."
[User Blood-Fiend_99: WAIT, WHAT?!]
[User Horny_Gamer_X: Bro is going to risk his life for the plot?! Let's fucking go!]
[User Weapons_Nut_44: ARE YOU INSANE?! THAT'S A RANK-A GOLIATH! YOU ARE A THOUSAND METERS AWAY WITH JUNK AMMO!]
Kaelen didn't listen to the floating text.
He threw himself completely prone on the jagged rock ledge.
He reached forward, flipping the heavy metal bipod of the Vanguard MK-IV rifle down with an icy composure.
Clack.
He nestled the heavy stock tightly into the groove of his shoulder, ignoring the dull ache of old scars.
He pressed his right eye against the smart-linked tactical scope.
The digital reticle flared to life, bleeding bright crimson data directly into his newly enhanced optic nerves.
The Behemoth was exactly 1,042 meters away.
There was a heavy, sulfurous subterranean crosswind blowing left to right at twelve knots.
The blistering ambient heat rising from the magma river would cause severe thermal drift on the bullet's trajectory, warping the air itself.
And the target was armored in volcanic rock thicker than a tank chassis.
A normal sniper would calculate the variables, realize the shot was impossible, and abandon the field.
Kaelen Cross wasn't a normal sniper. He was a god of geometry born from the deepest trenches of hell.
He reached into his chest, grabbing onto the tiny, flickering puddle of blue mana he had just regained.
He didn't use it to reinforce his broken body. He didn't use it to shield himself.
He violently forced every single drop of magic he possessed directly through his hands, down the star-metal barrel of the rifle, and straight into the crude, unstable monster-core slug sitting in the chamber.
The dark metal of the Vanguard rifle began to glow with a terrifying, blinding blue light.
The weapon hummed, vibrating violently against his chest, threatening to tear itself apart from the volatile energy.
[Warning: Chamber pressure exceeding 400%. Catastrophic failure imminent.]
Kaelen ignored the system warning flashing in his retina.
He shifted the crosshairs with micrometric precision.
He didn't aim for the beast's massive rock limbs. He didn't aim for its thick skull.
He aimed precisely at the glowing, orange, unarmored eye located directly in the center of its chest.
Distance: 1,042 meters.
Windage: Adjust left three mil-dots.
Elevation: Adjust up one-point-five mil-dots for gravity drop.
Target status: Stationary, charging attack.
The Behemoth's four massive fists were at their apex. It was a fraction of a second away from bringing them down to crush Vespera's skull.
Kaelen exhaled, emptying his lungs completely.
His heart stopped beating between beats.
The universe went absolutely, perfectly silent.
He squeezed the trigger.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The sound of the Vanguard MK-IV firing wasn't a mere gunshot. It was a localized tectonic event.
The massive recoil ripped backward, hitting Kaelen's shoulder with the force of a speeding truck.
The bone underneath his skin fractured instantly.
He grunted, his teeth grinding together as he kept his eye glued to the scope, watching the shot.
The unstable, blue-glowing slug tore out of the barrel, breaking the sound barrier instantaneously.
It left a massive, spiraling vapor trail of displaced air and magic in its wake.
It crossed the thousand-meter gap in less than a single second.
The Behemoth didn't even have time to blink.
The crude, jagged bullet, packed with volatile canine monster-cores and raw mana, struck the beast exactly in the direct center of its glowing orange eye.
It didn't ricochet. It didn't bounce off.
It punched through the gelatinous membrane, traveling deep into the fiery core of the beast's internal brain pan.
And then, the unstable bullet did exactly what it was designed to do.
It detonated.
FTHOOOOOOOM!
A massive, blinding sphere of chaotic blue mana exploded outward from the inside of the Behemoth's chest.
The shockwave was cataclysmic.
The sixty-foot titan of rock and magma instantly stiffened, all four of its massive arms freezing mid-strike.
Thick, glowing blue light speared out through the cracks in its volcanic armor.
Its chest expanded violently, and then, with a sickening, wet crunch, the beast's entire upper torso violently blew apart from the inside out.
Chunks of obsidian armor the size of cars rained down across the cavern.
Magma blood sprayed the ceiling in a spectacular, horrific geyser.
The Behemoth's lower half swayed for a single, agonizing second, before the entire colossal structure collapsed backward into the magma river, sending a tidal wave of lava crashing against the shores.
The Rank-A Abyssal Goliath was dead.
The entire cavern fell into a dead, ringing silence.
Up on the ridge, a thousand meters away, Kaelen lay completely still.
His right shoulder was dislocated and fractured, throbbing with blinding agony.
The barrel of the Vanguard rifle was glowing white-hot, partially melted from the sheer internal pressure of the shot.
He slowly let out his breath.
[SYSTEM ALERT: ANOMALY DESTROYED!]
[Rank-A Entity Terminated by User: Kaelen Cross.]
[Current Viewers: 55,200 (VIRAL TRENDING)]
The chat had entirely broken. The text wasn't even rendering anymore. It was just a blur of pure, unadulterated, cosmic hysteria.
[User Zark: NO SHOT! NO FUCKING SHOT!!!]
[User Weapons_Nut_44: A ONE-SHOT KILL ON A RANK-A WITH MANUALLY FORGED JUNK AMMO?! HE DESTROYED THE CORE FROM THE INSIDE!]
[User Succubus_Simp_Zero: HE SAVED DEMON MOMMY! TRULY A GOD MC!]
[User Star_Dust_69: 55K VIEWERS?! THE ALGORITHM IS GOING TO PUSH THIS TO THE ENTIRE COSMOS!]
[User DragonBoredom: Splendid. A magnificent display of timing, calculation, and sheer audacity. The show has truly begun.]
But Kaelen wasn't looking at the system.
He was looking down the scope.
Down in the chasm, the dust and smoke began to settle around the massive, shattered corpse of the Behemoth.
Vespera slowly pushed herself off the ground.
She wiped a smear of black blood from her pale lips.
She looked at the headless, ruined titan that had almost killed her.
Then, she slowly, deliberately turned her head.
A thousand meters away. Through a thick haze of sulfur, smoke, and darkness.
Her luminescent crimson eyes pierced the distance perfectly.
She didn't look at the ridge. She looked directly down the optic lens of Kaelen's sniper scope.
Through a mile of empty space, she locked eyes directly with the human who had just fired the shot.
Her pupils dilated.
Her lips parted, a dark, terrifying, incredibly obsessive smile spreading across her flawlessly demonic face.
Kaelen's blood ran cold.
He hadn't just stolen a kill.
He had caught the attention of something far, far worse than a Behemoth.
