**Chapter 56: The Staging Facility**
The facility outside Tier-2 had been a guild training compound before the Trial repurposed it — practice yards converted into briefing rooms, a sparring arena still marked with faded guild insignia nobody had bothered painting over.
The guards outside the facility keeping watch like usual spotting nothing amiss until one noticed something unusual and turned to his partner " hey wasn't it day like five minutes ago" his partner turned and observed the surroundings noticing the shadows around them move weirdly and everywhere becoming dark before it actually turned pitch black it looked like night and day were drawn in a single line before something stepped through
With their nerves pushed to the max they aimed their gun towards the humanoid creature stepping through it felt like the lord of death had come to take their lives
This was Kai's combination of [shadow king] and usage of [shadow network] to travel it could cover very long distances but it also brought out phenomena as if the shadows were announcing their kings arrival
Though he did not release his existential pressure it was still enough to push these guards to their knees.
Kai walked up to them his black combat uniform peeking through his dark coat it looked like it was made from the deepest of shadows it twisted and turned and flowed all together making it look both cool and eerie at the same time.
He brought out the ID card that was given to him by the investigatior, one of the guards shakily took it from him and swiped it across the lock confirming his identity and ushering him inside.
Once he had gone out of sight both of them collapsed again looking like they had escaped death.
Kai arrived the way Vask had arranged, through a side entrance and a name that wasn't his own on the visitor log,
He heard them before he saw them. Voices carrying from the main hall, a dozen people who'd apparently already met each other enough times to have settled into something like familiarity.
---
They felt him before he even took a single step inside the lights dimmed shadows stretched longer towards the entrance and the he took a step inside.
The room went quiet in stages, the way a room did when people noticed something wrong one at a time instead of all together.
Mira Crest saw him first. He recognized her immediately — the same composure from the auction floor, the same steady eyes that had watched her father bid eighty million crystals on her behalf. She was sitting with a posture that suggested she'd been the group's de facto leader by default, the way people with noble house training tended to fill leadership vacuums without needing to be asked.
She stood.
"You're—" She stopped herself, recalibrating the sentence mid-word. " You're the new addition, welcome."
She stretched her hands for a handshake and he accepted it "my name is Mira"
"Kai" he said.
The rest of the room finished processing in the half-second after that. He watched it land differently across each face — recognition in some, confusion in others who apparently hadn't been told anything beyond *a new member is joining today.*
A young man near the back — barely older than Kai looked, dark hair, the particular restlessness of someone whose body hadn't finished growing into whatever power it had recently acquired — stood up too fast.
"Wait." He looked between Mira and Kai. "*Him?* This is who they've been talking about?"
"Cael," Mira said, a warning in the single syllable.
"No, I want to hear it," Cael said. "Because either this is the person who cleared Vasthold alone, in which case I have about forty questions, or someone's playing an elaborate joke on people who've been risking their lives for two months, and I'd like to know which before I keep sitting in this room."
Kai studied him through Soul Umbral Sense — not hostile, exactly. Defensive. The particular prickliness of someone who'd earned everything he currently had through genuine effort and resented anything that looked like it might have arrived easier for someone else.
Kai truly looked at him *did he not notice his aura or was he blinded by jealousy to think seems like he's the kind to be ruled by emotions this was the *The third son,* Kai placed him. *Celestial Vessel physique. Rejected by his own family until it he got the physique.*
"It's not a joke," Kai said. "And I do not need to prove anything to you or anyone I came here to see if you all are worth my time and effort"
Cael's mouth opened, then closed.
Then his face turned a shade of red " well because you fought a few trash at the border you think you're better than us?, better than me!"
Light began to pour out of his body in waves his aura rising
Mira stepped back she could have stopped this but even she was curious about this new addition she wanted to know what made him special
So she left the hot tempered cael to run around if it got too serious she would step in
By now cael had formed a glowing hammer made from both fire and light he had a fire talent couple it with his celestial physique it made his output eve more devastating.
He raised his hammer high up " Take this!"
But before he could take a single step his instincts roared at him that if he should take one more step here he would absolutely die and it was spot on because Kai had only raised one hand and called forth his shadow king authority he had grabbed caels shadow by the throat and was about to rip it out if he had followed through with the attack killing him on the spot.
The room went very still.
Cael quickly released the power he was charging it dispersed very quickly and he felt the hand of death receed from him he looked at the still outstretched hand of Kai sweat filling his forehead
He sat back down slowly, his body trembling all over
something in his face working through several things at once before settling on something that looked unmistakably like fear.
"Okay," he said. "Okay. Sorry. I just—" He said not looking Kai in the eyes his former bravado gone.
Kai put his hand back down and gave a sharp nod
A woman near the window had been watching the entire exchange with the sharp, assessing patience of someone deciding whether the newcomer was worth her attention before committing to an opinion.
---
Mira finally stepped it and made the introductions properly once the room settled, moving around the circle with the efficiency of someone who'd clearly done this before for other new arrivals.
"Dess connor," she said, gesturing to the woman by the window. "Restoration Artifact recipient. Runs search-and-rescue into active breaks — she's pulled more civilians out of collapsing gates than anyone else in this cell combined."
Dess inclined her head, saying nothing, still assessing.
"Cael Thorne, who you've met. Divine Root and Celestial Vessel, dual application — his family's sect finally took him back last month, for what that's worth."
"Not much," Cael muttered, and Mira let it pass without comment.
"Sohan." A quiet man near the back, older than the rest by a decade at least, nodded once without standing. "Talent Seed recipient. Fourth one, from the auction."
Kai looked at him properly. This was the one — the young person from the entrance, holding a grain of dark seed in both hands. Except not young at all, he realized, recalibrating. He'd misjudged the age entirely that night, reading desperation as youth.
"You had eighteen million," Kai said. "Everything your family had."
Sohan's expression flickered, surprised that Kai remembered.
"I did," he said. "I still don't know what my Talent actually is. It's still—" he searched for the word "—forming. The Bureau's classification division has three working theories and none of them agree with each other."
"It'll settle," Kai said. "It's built from what you already are. Give it time to finish becoming that."
Sohan looked at him for a long moment, something unreadable passing behind his eyes, and simply nodded.
Mira continued around the room — eight more names, eight more brief histories, each one carrying the same underlying shape: someone the world had written off, handed something impossible, and watched rebuild themselves around it faster than anyone expected. A former guild subordinate whose restored Talent had made her the fastest search coordinator in three tiers. A minor cultivator whose bloodline had drawn the attention of a sect that used to laugh at her family's name. Two siblings, both recipients of different physiques, who'd apparently spent the last month arguing about whose was better in a way that suggested genuine affection underneath the rivalry.
By the end of it, Kai had a working map of twelve people, each carrying a piece of something he'd made in a back room months ago, all of it converging in this one repurposed guild hall because none of them had been willing to simply sit safely while their world burned.
---
"So," Mira said, once the introductions finished, "why are you actually here?"
Direct. He appreciated that.
"To find out if this is worth my time," he said honestly. "Twelve people with newly acquired power isn't automatically twelve people worth fighting alongside. I've seen what desperation does to people. I've seen what entitlement does too. I wanted to know which one I was looking at before I committed to anything."
The room absorbed that without much reaction — most of them, he suspected, had expected something colder from a man who'd killed nine A-ranks alone and never once claimed credit for it publicly.
"And?" Dess asked, finally speaking, her voice carrying the same sharp patience her face had.
Kai looked around the room once more. At Cael's defensive pride slowly giving way to something like relief. At Sohan's quiet, hard-won steadiness. At Mira, who'd clearly been holding this group together through sheer competence long before anyone official showed up to coordinate it.
"Ask me again in a month," he said. "I don't decide people are worth something on a first impression. I decide it by watching what they do when it's expensive."
Mira's mouth curved, faint and genuine — an expression he recognized, distantly, as something Sera did when she'd decided a piece of information was worth filing carefully.
"Fair," she said. "We fight in three days. Sector Nine's gate is showing pre-break signatures. You're welcome to come watch before you decide anything."
"I'll come," Kai said. "Not to watch."
Cael looked up sharply.
"You're fighting with us? Already?"
"I told you," Kai said. "I decide by watching what people do when it's expensive." He looked around the room once more. "That includes me."
