God Crafter

**Chapter 50: What Half a Threshold Buys**

Voss didn't attack like anything Kai had fought tonight. He attacked like something that had already decided it was dead and had nothing left to spend carefully.

The first blow came before Kai finished raising his second blade — not fast in the clean, readable way the earlier creatures had been fast, but fast in a broken, overclocked way, Voss's body moving in bursts that outran his own control, half a threshold's worth of power routed through a frame that hadn't finished learning how to carry it. He closed thirty meters in a fraction of a second and then overshot, stumbling through the space where Kai had been standing because his own new speed had betrayed him.

Kai used the stumble.

He drove Void Blood into Voss's exposed flank, purple fire riding the strike, and felt it connect — felt it *cut*, same as every other kill tonight — and understood immediately that this one wasn't going to end that easily. The wound opened. Voss didn't slow down. Whatever pain signal should have accompanied a blade through his side simply didn't register through the noise of a body actively tearing itself apart from the inside.

*He can't feel it anymore,* Kai realized. *There's nothing left in him that has room to feel it.*

Voss turned, too fast, and backhanded him with a strike that should have been blocked or dodged and instead simply arrived, Phase Existence rolling the wrong way for once, his body fully present at exactly the coordinates the blow found. The impact lifted him off the water's surface entirely.

He hit the water twenty meters out hard enough to black out for a fraction of a second, and came back to awareness already moving, already screaming at his own body to work through ribs that were no longer just cracked but audibly grinding with every breath.

---

He didn't have a plan.

That was the truth of it, underneath everything — no clever combination waiting in reserve, no untested ability he'd been saving specifically for this. He'd used the trick with the clones. He'd used the pocket dimension. He'd used every tool the Inheritance had given him at least once tonight, against enemies with structure, with will, with technique.

Voss had none of that left. Voss was just force now, unanchored and enormous and actively killing itself with every second it remained in motion, and force without structure didn't respond to the kind of precision Kai had built his entire fighting style around.

*Then don't fight it precisely,* he thought, dragging himself upright through water gone red at the edges. *Fight it the way it's fighting. Ugly. All at once.*

He called the Domain's full authority — not a targeted ability, not the Flame alone, everything, the way he had against the collapsing trench, except this time pointed outward instead of used for escape.

He spoke the Edict.

"Stay."

It wasn't precise. It wasn't clever. It was the crudest possible use of everything he'd built, thrown at a target that had already proven, twice now, that its will could resist the suppression's grip when it committed hard enough. But Voss wasn't fighting with will right now. Voss was fighting with momentum, blind and directionless, and momentum had nothing to resist a command with.

Voss's body locked mid-lunge.

Not fully. Not for long — Kai felt the half-power suppression straining against a signature that had, for one catastrophic moment, genuinely brushed the edge of S-rank magnitude even without an anchor to hold it there. But it held for a fraction of a second, one single fraction, and a fraction was all Kai had left to spend anyway.

He closed the distance himself this time, ribs screaming, both blades already gathering everything he had left in his reservoir — Flame compressed past anything he'd risked tonight, Void Blood layered under it, the native shadow steel of the second blade humming with a resonance that felt, for the first time all night, like it might actually be too much for his own body to safely channel.

He didn't care.

He drove both blades through Voss's chest at the same instant the lock broke. Cutting through his torso through it's organs, but voss was like a machine on steroids he simply was too far gone to care. His only objective now was to kill the human Infront of it, it drew deep from its reserves again and cast the technique one more time

[S rank skill: jaws of jormugandr]

At point blank range a massive serpent maw formed in front of Kai it's massive maws opening and closing so fast that it took half his torso with it black blood and gore everywhere for a second all movement in the domain stopped, then the construct dissolved into a pile shadows, in that split second where he almost died he had already prepared a shadow clone incase of emergency seeing his imminent death he used shadow exchange and eternal fade making both the serpent and voss believe he was finally dead.

Before Kai appeared behind him his katana pulsing with the entirety of his mana and activating his void blood to the max this was all or nothing if voss noticed him and blocked it would spell catastrophe for him, but energy of that scale was not something that was easy to hide but due to voss's lax in guard for a second gave him to opportunity to get in close.

And for a moment voss regretted ever laying its eyes on this monster of a human he should have killed him when it had the chance and now it was paying for this error with its head.

The katana sliced through scales, muscle and blood it met no resistance his void blood ignoring its half step S rank defense entirely voss's head rolled through the water before the purple flames took special joy in devouring this one as it was the one who permanently extinguished a part of it self

The energy feedback was massive giving him a startling jolt as the flood of energy from voss was astronomical

He staggered, caught himself on nothing but sheer will, and pushed the surge straight into the World System before it could do anything to a body already running on fumes and adrenaline. The number barely registered. He didn't have the capacity left to care about it properly.

Nine down.

The water around him was empty for the first time in eight hours.

No beasts no creatures just the almost endless expanse of his hellish like domain.

---

He stood very still in the aftermath, letting the Domain hold its shape a moment longer while his body remembered, slowly, painfully, that the fight was actually over.

His ribs were still broken. Blood had dried across half his face and both arms, some of it his, most of it not. The Flame under his skin pulsed low and spent, whatever portion of it Voss's resistance had permanently cost him leaving a gap he could feel the way a person felt a missing tooth with their tongue.

He was alive.

He let the Domain go.

The throne dissolved first, then the purple light folding back through shadow into ordinary darkness, the hellish structure of the entire night simply ceasing to exist the way it always did — without ceremony, the moment he stopped willing it into being.

The sudden absence of the Domain's ambient pressure hit the seawall like a physical thing. He heard, distantly, through senses that had narrowed down to the barest functional minimum, someone shouting his direction — the commander, probably, or one of her soldiers, the words not quite reaching him clearly enough to parse.

He turned toward the shore.

Walking felt like a decision his body had to make fresh with every single step.

He made it anyway.

---

The commander met him at the water's edge, sword sheathed, her face doing something complicated that hadn't fully settled into any single expression yet.

"You're—" she started, and stopped, looking at the blood, the ribs visibly wrong under his shirt, the particular gray exhaustion of someone who had spent everything they had and then found more to spend anyway.

"Alive," Kai said, which felt like the only honest word left in him. "Barely."

"The water," she said. "It's—"

"Empty," he confirmed. "For now."

*For now* landed harder than he'd meant it to. He thought, distantly, through the fog of exhaustion, about the stationary signature still sitting somewhere far beneath everything, still watching, still deciding.

He thought about Voss's voice, right before the end. *Not once in five hundred years has a human killed seven of the King's chosen in a single night.*

*Eight,* he corrected silently. *Eight, if you count yourself.*

He didn't know what that number meant to whatever was still down there.

He suspected he was about to find out.

But that was a problem for after he'd slept, after his ribs had finished knitting themselves back together, after he'd had a single hour where nothing in the world required him to still be standing.

He looked at the commander.

"I need somewhere to sit down," he said, "before I fall down."

She caught him before he finished the sentence.
