Chapter 96: The Calm After the Storm
Yuki left the capital city and ventured into the forest to finish his quest of hunting down the local goblin hordes, completing all his missions for the foreseeable future.
The morning sun rose over the Capital, breaking through soft, golden clouds and casting a warm glow over the cobbled streets of the lower district. For the first time in months, there was no distant rumble of magical artillery, no howling arctic gale, and no stench of blood or charred flesh.
Inside the pocket dimension, Yuki stood near the front doorway, adjusting the collar of his simple, tailored dark linen shirt. He looked down at his hands. The pale, milky tint from the radiation burns was gone, replaced by healthy skin. His grip was steady. It was time to start the day and be positive.
"Ember, if you burn the bread while we’re out, I’m deducting it from your non-existent salary," Yuki called out over his shoulder toward the kitchen.
From the dining table, Primarch 01—or Ember, as Yuki had started calling her, since saying "Primarch 01" or just "01" felt weird—glared at him. She was wearing an oversized cotton tunic and holding a wooden broom like a broadsword.
"I know how to watch an oven, you arrogant baker!" she huffed, crossing her arms. "Just go! And bring back those sweet berry tarts from the plaza!"
Yuki chuckled softly, shaking his head as he stepped out onto the sunlit porch. "Just try not to break the broom. You’re holding it like it’s a sword, Miss Mage."
Waiting for him in the expansive open garden courtyard were Vee and Kasumi.
Vee had traded her blood-stained scout armor for a sleek, wine-red summer dress that hugged her frame, her white hair pinned back with a polished silver comb Yuki had bought her two days prior. Beside her, Kasumi wore a soft, pale-blue sundress with embroidered cherry blossoms along the hem. Her rose eyes were bright as she adjusted a straw sunhat.
When Yuki stepped off the porch, both girls stopped talking, their faces softening into warm, radiant smiles.
"Look at you," Vee said, stepping forward to smooth down his shoulders with a light touch. "No armor, no hidden daggers, no spatial bombs. You almost look like a normal guy."
"I am a normal guy... well, a somewhat normal guy," Yuki smirked, sliding his right hand into hers and lacing their fingers together. He turned to his left, extending his arm to Kasumi. "Shall we?"
Kasumi’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink as she wrapped her arm around his, leaning her head gently against his shoulder, her large fluffy fox tail swaying in excitement. "Lead the way."
They spent the entire afternoon wandering the bustling, vibrant thoroughfares of the Capital’s upper terrace. Away from the monster-infested frontiers and the political scheming of guild halls and civic duties, the city felt alive with pure, peaceful energy. Street performers played acoustic lutes near the central fountain, vendors roasted spiced nuts over open braziers, and young mages put on harmless displays of colorful fireworks for groups of laughing children. The cool breeze of the northern region flowed through the streets, reminding Yuki of home back on Earth.
Yuki bought them everything they pointed at—crisp candied apples, fresh honeyed pastries, and delicate silk ribbons. They sat together on a wide marble bench overlooking the river, watching the white-sailed trading ships glide quietly through the water alongside sea dragons swimming side-by-side with the vessels like dolphins.
"Yuki?" Kasumi murmured softly, her fingers tracing small, comforting circles on the back of his hand as she looked out over the water.
"Hmm?"
"Is this real?" she whispered, her voice laced with a sweet, vulnerable quietness. "Sometimes... I wake up in the middle of the night terrified that I’m still back in the snow, or that the Citadel is still falling. Or that I’m still stuck as a digital lifeform and not a physical person made out of flesh."
Yuki grew quiet, his gaze softening as he looked down at her. He leaned over, pressing a slow, tender kiss against her temple, breathing in the sweet scent of jasmine in her hair.
"It’s real, Kasumi," Yuki said softly. "The cold, unforgiving snow is gone. The war in the wasteland far north is over. We’re here."
Vee shifted closer, resting her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart as her rabbit ears twitched slightly. "We almost lost you, Yuki. Twice. When you kissed us goodbye in that pocket dimension... I felt like my whole world was tearing apart."
Yuki slid his arm around Vee’s waist, pulling her flush against his side while keeping Kasumi close against his shoulder.
"I’m sorry," Yuki said, his voice flat with absolute sincerity. "I let the hatred take over. I wanted revenge—to show that wolf I was not to be taken lightly. I thought sacrificing myself was the only way to clear the board. I thought I was fine, confident that I would win and the gods would keep their end of the deal. But sitting here with both of you... I realized how stupid I was. I don’t want to die for a cause anymore. I want to live for you two."
Vee lifted her head, her ruby eyes shining with unspoken emotion. She reached up, placing her palm against his cheek, and pulled his face down to meet hers.
The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a desperate, passionate warmth that washed away weeks of blood, snow, and violence. When she finally pulled back, her lips were flushed and her breath hitched slightly.
"Good," Vee whispered, "Because tonight... you belong entirely to us. No farm work, no physics lectures, and definitely no Primarchs."
Kasumi smiled softly, her face burning crimson as she kissed his jawline, her hand sliding down his chest. "We missed you, Yuki. All of you. No more fighting—you have suffered through enough."
Yuki looked at the two women in his arms, feeling the warmth of the sun on his face, listening to the sound of the river below, and knowing the undeniable promise of intimacy waiting for them back home.
