Chapter 88: Inquisitor’s Mission and an Unwanted Surprise
After spending months inside his pocket dimension training to wield a sword under Iron’s brutal instruction, Yuki was finally ready. It wasn’t nearly long enough to make him a master swordsman, but it was enough for him to grasp the fundamentals and hold his ground in a life-or-death fight.
The weapon Iron had bestowed upon him was a lean, slightly curved blade forged from the dense, shock-absorbent carapace of high-tier essence beasts, fused with system-reinforced spatial metals. The blade was a sleek matte-black, etched with thin, vein-like grooves running down the fuller.
It was a tool perfectly tailored for Yuki’s combat style.
Why face an opponent on equal terms? This wasn’t a noble duel—it was pure survival. It was kill or be killed. As Yuki had learned from a novel he read back on Earth, the ultimate fundamental of a warrior was knowing how to eliminate your enemy before they ever had the chance to eliminate you.
After saying his goodbyes to Vee and Kasumi, Yuki left the pocket dimension and followed the coordinates Iron had provided, trudging through the knee-deep snow toward his target.
Halfway to his destination, a sharp chime echoed in his head as the System issued a new directive directly from the Queen in his capacity as an Inquisitor.
[Inquisitor Mission Triggered]
Objective: Locate and eliminate the rogue entity known as The White Blade.
Failure Penalty: -3 Merit Points.
Completion Reward: +5 Merit Points.
...Five points instead of three? Yuki thought to himself, narrowing his eyes at the interface. Why the sudden jump in reward? Is this target actually dangerous? Ah, whatever, I’ll be fine... hopefully. Also, what is it with every single high-tier target being named ’The White This’ or ’The Black That’? Come on, show some creativity... At least they gave Lily a cool name.
He closed the menu with a weary sigh. Let’s just get this mission over with.
CLANG!
The sharp, deafening ring of clashing steel echoed violently through the desolate clearing.
Yuki slid backward across the frost, his arms quivering from the sheer force of the impact. He dropped to one knee, panting heavily as he fought to catch his breath.
"Typical," his opponent sneered, raising her weapon into a pristine defensive guard. "You Inquisitors are so utterly pathetic. It’s embarrassing that your Queen keeps sending more of you to die. Look at you—already down on your knees when we’ve barely exchanged a handful of blows!"
"Well, yeah!" Yuki snapped back, glaring up at her. "Of course I’m on the ground! I need to catch my breath! What, am I supposed to stab my brand-new blade into the dirt just to look cool? That’d be stupid. And for someone talking so much trash, you haven’t even landed a single hit on me yet! It’s pretty sad that you think you’re the better fighter."
"Excuse me?!" she barked, her eyes flaring with rage. "I am The White Blade! The strongest—"
"Yeah, I really don’t care," Yuki interrupted, waving a dismissive hand.
She gritted her teeth, her knuckles turning white on the hilt as she surged forward. "I’ll show you my strength!"
They always get so worked up. It’s almost beautiful, Yuki snickered internally.
Their blades met in a violent head-on clash, sparks showering over the snow.
She immediately unleashed a relentless flurry of heavy, sweeping strikes, driving Yuki back and attempting to overwhelm his guard before he could mount an offense.
They were fighting in a small, ancient stone amphitheater buried in the forest, providing a flat surface where neither had to worry about slipping on hidden ice. Yuki had deliberately baited her into this terrain. Forcing her to rely purely on footwork and aggressive lunges made it far easier for her to overcommit—and trying to out-skill a seasoned duelist in a fair fight was a terrible idea anyway.
Strike after heavy strike hammered against Yuki’s matte-black katana, but not a single edge touched his skin.
Deciding he had gathered enough data on her timing, Yuki abruptly abandoned his purely defensive stance and thrust forward into a sudden counter-attack. The unexpected shift threw her rhythm off. Her sword grazed past his side, slicing cleanly through his outer coat, but Yuki’s follow-up was already airborne—a lethal downward slash threatening to split her down the center.
She dashed backward in panic, only for her foot to catch on something solid. She stumbled, looking down in shock to find Yuki’s armored tail tightly wrapped around her ankle.
Relying on raw instinct, she ignored the trap and threw her blade upward to parry—a split-second decision that saved her life.
CLANG!
Yuki’s katana slammed against her guard inches from her face. Maintaining heavy pressure on her weapon with his right hand, Yuki uncoiled his tail from her ankle and whipped it forward as a secondary blade, aiming straight for her throat.
She reacted instantly, catching the razor-sharp tip of his tail with her armored gauntlet just inches from her skin. She was wearing light, robed leather armor; if that tail pierced through, it would punch right through her collarbone.
With a desperate burst of strength, she angled her sword to the side, deflecting Yuki’s weight and shoving him off.
The moment her feet touched the stone, she relaxed her posture and lunged forward, gripping her sword with both hands to deliver a wide, heavy horizontal arc that missed Yuki’s nose by a fraction of an inch.
Yuki countered with another rapid downward strike, seamlessly transitioning into a fluid, curved slash aimed at her neck. The tip caught her off guard, shearing off a chunk of her leather shoulder guard.
The two traded blows back and forth in a blur of motion. Yuki knew he was at an inherent disadvantage in pure swordsmanship, but his mobility, his tail, and his constant mental taunts kept the scales perfectly balanced.
Yuki stepped in to deliver another strike—and then froze.
His danger senses suddenly flared violently, sending a wave of ice down his spine.
At the exact same time, The White Blade abruptly broke stance, spinning around with her back turned to Yuki as her eyes widened in terror.
"Salamanders..." she spat, her voice trembling.
Yuki didn’t care what was coming. Seizing the open vulnerability, he lunged forward and drove his blade straight into her back, landing a fatal strike through her spine.
"Wh—what are you doing, you idiot?!" she gasped, blood spilling from her lips as she collapsed. "Can’t you see something is coming for both of us?!"
"Doesn’t matter," Yuki muttered coldly. "Whatever it is, it’ll take a minute to get here. Best to finish our fight first."
"Tch... fine then, you little shrimp..." she growled, her breath fading as her body went limp.
Before Yuki could even retrieve his blade, his danger senses went from a subtle warning to a deafening, panicked scream.
The entire forest fell deathly silent—and then the trees began to shake.
The ground beneath the stone arena trembled violently, a low, rhythmic thud echoing through the earth.
What the hell is that?! Yuki thought, backing away from his fallen target as the distant tree line splintered into toothpicks.
As he prepared to turn and sprint, a suffocating aura of pure, unadulterated dread washed over his entire body.
Instinctively, Yuki threw his arms over his face.
The next second, a blinding wave of sheer heat engulfed the clearing. A colossal explosion of force slammed into Yuki, flinging him backward like a ragdoll through the air.
[Target Eliminated: The White Blade] [Contribution Rank: 2nd Place] [Reward Issued: +2,000 System Shop Points]
Yuki pushed himself up from the dirt, groaning in agony. His clothes were charred, and his skin was covered in severe burns and bleeding lacerations.
He had no idea what had just happened, but the pristine forest around him was completely erased. A massive, scorched crater seventy feet wide burned furiously right in front of him, the stone arena melted into slag.
Slowly raising his head, Yuki stared into the flames—and felt his heart drop into his stomach.
Standing amidst the inferno was an all-too-familiar nightmare.
Bahameth, the Primordial Sin.
The dozens of glowing eyes covering its hideous torso were locked onto something in the sky above, completely ignoring the burning wreckage around it. Its massive, razor-toothed maw twisted into a sickening grin, and it let out a bone-curling, metallic screech that rattled the very air.
Yuki didn’t hesitate. He scrambled to his feet and sprinted in the opposite direction, having zero desire to stick around and find out what kind of monster Bahameth was eager to fight.
He frantically contemplated opening his pocket dimension to hide, but immediately scrapped the idea. If Iron could walk through his spatial portal without permission, a Rank 5 Primordial Sin could undoubtedly tear its way inside too—and bringing that catastrophe into his house was the last thing he wanted.
"Where do you think you’re going, little one?" a crude, guttural voice rumbled directly behind him. The sound vibrated straight through Yuki’s skeleton.
No, no, no, no, NO!
"I need you alive," Bahameth’s voice echoed with terrifying malice. "You will serve as the bait for Black."
What?! Who the hell is ’Black’?! Why does it want me?! And what does it mean by BAIT?!
Before Yuki could even process the words or take another step, Bahameth materialized behind him, a massive, muscular fist raised high into the air.
Gods damn it! Yuki screamed internally, bracing to get squished into a fine paste.
BOOM!
The strike didn’t hit him directly—it slammed into the earth right behind his heels, shattering the bedrock and sending a shockwave that threw Yuki head-first into the dirt.
Gasping for air, Yuki clutched his bruised face and rolled over to face the monster. The moment he turned, a dark object blurred through the air—his own matte-black katana, thrown by Bahameth, slammed hilt-first straight into his ribs with a sickening crunch.
"AAGHH! You motherfucker!" Yuki wheezed out, clutching his chest in agony as he writhed on the frozen ground.
Bahameth lumbered over, towering over Yuki’s broken form like a mountain of shadow and eyes.
"Sit still," the beast rumbled coldly, "or I will remove your arms and legs."
What rank is this fucking thing?! Why is it even here?! And why does it want ME as bait?! Bait for WHAT?!
Yuki cursed the creature out in his head with every insult he knew, calling it an ugly, dried-up piece of shit and a burnt sack of garbage. Naturally, he kept every single word buried deep inside his mind, because he wasn’t stupid enough to actively provoke a Rank 5 monster that had wiped out an entire elite squad and could speed-blitz him before he could blink.
Fine, Yuki thought, grinding his teeth as he lay motionless in the snow. If I’m bait, I’ll just play dead and wait... The second whatever it’s waiting for shows up, I’m running for my fucking life.
