Chapter 52: Touch Me, But Not in That Way

"Hey, Yuki," Nyquella said, walking over to him and flashing her most innocent, sweet smile.

"I’ve been feeling quite stiff lately. The toxins from your clone and all that intense fighting have really taken a toll on my body. Since you’re such an expert... do you mind giving me a ’full’ body massage?"

"Really? How bad are we talking?" Yuki asked, pausing his work and setting his tailoring tools aside.

"Really bad," Nyquella purred. She slowly turned her back to him, deliberately lowering her collar to expose her upper back. With a slow, calculated motion, she swept her vibrant red-orange hair over her shoulder to the side, completely baring her neck.

Yuki walked up behind her. He placed his hands on her shoulders and began to slowly knead the tight muscles. The sudden, intense relief caused an involuntary sound to slip from her lips.

"Ahh..."

Nyquella’s voice completely betrayed her. She quickly clamped a hand over her mouth, desperately trying to suppress any further lewd sounds from leaking out. That plan, however, failed entirely.

"Oh gods, his hands are so incredibly warm and soft... Mmm, I want more."

Before Nyquella even realized what was happening, her knees went weak. She found herself pressed up against the heavy wooden workbench, her fingers tightly gripping the edge of the table as her entire body shivered from the delicious sensation.

Yuki continued his massage with practiced ease, his touch moving from her tense neck, down her shoulders, and slowly tracing down her spine.

But the moment his fingers reached her lower back, his hands suddenly halted. The soft, smooth texture of her skin abruptly vanished, replaced by a strange, hard, scaly feeling under the fabric. Confused, he moved his hands back up her back, his fingers tracing wide, sweeping paths across her skin. It was everywhere. Her entire lower back was covered in that rough, scaly texture.

"Huh? What is this?" Yuki asked, his voice dropping its lighthearted tone.

Nyquella’s entire body went rigid.

"Shit!" she screamed internally, a wave of cold dread washing over her as she remembered the Black Rot.

She scrambled to quickly pull her clothes back up to cover herself, but Yuki was far too fast. He easily pinned her arms, keeping her locked in place. He pressed his fingers gently against the side of her neck. With his other hand, he used his tail to sweep up a small, raw essence crystal from the floor and pressed it directly against her skin.

The moment the crystal made contact with her mana, the suppression failed. Her entire back instantly flared, revealing a sickly, pitch-black patch covered in thick, dark scales.

"...You’re infected," Yuki said, his emerald eyes narrowing as he looked at her. "Were you seriously trying to hide this from me?"

"N-No! I wasn’t!" Nyquella stammered, her heart racing. "I just... I forgot!"

Yuki released his grip on her. Muttering aggressively to himself, he began pulling a flurry of rare ingredients from his shelves, frantically flipping through the pages of the medicine book he had found.

Panicked, paranoid, and utterly terrified of what he might do to her, Nyquella quickly adjusted her dress. She bolted out of the basement workshop and sprinted straight toward the mansion’s front door.

"Crap, this is not good! Is he going to kill me?! Is he going to turn me into a sick lab experiment?! she panicked. Wait, no, he wouldn’t do that... Who am I kidding? If I were him, I’d definitely experiment on me!"

"This damn Black Rot... it’s eating away at all my essence. I can’t even channel enough mana to create my weapons!"

Desperate to escape, she reached out and grabbed the handles of the heavy front door. But the exact moment her skin made contact with the handle, a sharp, digging sensation struck her skin like a physical blow.

"Agh!"

She pulled her hand back instantly, tears bursting from her eyes. A blinding wave of agonizing pain rapidly spread from her arm, radiating through her entire body. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor, clutching her chest in agony.

"Why does this keep happening to me?!"

She lay there on the cold floor for what felt like an eternity, though in reality, only a few seconds had passed. Soon enough, her vision began to blur, the darkness closed in, and she completely blacked out.

"Aww! Ow, ow, ow! Stop, stop! That really hurts!" Nyquella squeaked, thrashing weakly as Yuki continued the operation.

"Well, it’s going to keep hurting if you keep moving so much. Now, sit still," Yuki scolded, firmly pressing her back down across his lap to keep her from wriggling away.

He coated his fingertips in a thick, dark Black Rot ointment. Using his sharp claws, he slowly and precisely dug into the edges of the infected flesh, lifting up the stubborn black scales and plucking them off one by one. The instant a scale was removed, he rubbed the soothing ointment directly into the raw wound.

Nyquella’s grip tightened desperately around Yuki’s tail, squeezing it like a stress toy.

"Yuki!" she cried out, her eyes teary. "Can’t I just drink the medicine instead? I promise I won’t spit it out this time!"

"No!"

"Whyyy?!"

"You know why. If you hadn’t tried to chemically suppress the infection instead of actually removing it, it wouldn’t have gotten this bad. We’ve already finished your entire back, so just relax. We’re almost done."

"Nmm..." she pouted heavily, shivering. "It’s cold. Can I at least cover my privates?"

Yuki stopped, looking down at her with a completely unamused expression. "No. You brought this on yourself, so we are finishing this tonight. Trust me, I hate doing this just as much as you do. I wanted to do things my way."

Nyquella perked up slightly, a hopeful, teasing smile playing on her lips. "We can always do it your way..."

"My way involves killing you and burning your body to ash to stop the spread," Yuki said flatly, returning to his work. "But Malakai said to keep you alive."

"What?!" Nyquella gasped, horrified. "Why on earth would you want to do that to me?!"

"You’re a researcher. You know how quarantine works. What do you think?"

"Fine, continue, you absolute asshole," Nyquella spat, glaring at him over her shoulder.

To help calm her nerves and distract her from the pain, Yuki began asking her about her past and what exactly she had been trying to accomplish down here. As she reluctantly explained her grand theories to him, Yuki’s expression grew more and more skeptical until he flat out sighed.

"That is a really, really stupid plan," Yuki declared. "If I were Asterion, I would have just changed my passive to manifest tentacles that completely bypass mana. It’s vastly superior for offense, defense, and most importantly, survival. I mean, what is a mage going to do when they get tightly wrapped up by tentacles and crushed? It’s way better than a single slash attack. It keeps the enemy in melee range, and because of the barrier, they literally can’t do anything to stop it."

Nyquella blinked, momentarily forgetting the pain. "...Now that you mention it, he absolutely would do something like that. Hmph. You and Asterion are so much more alike than I’d ever care to admit. He’s just... the crazy version of you."

"Yeah, no way. That is definitely not true," Yuki scoffed, shaking his head.

"It is! Both of you are utterly obsessed with survivability. You achieve your goals by making yourself completely unkillable and making life as easy as possible. He does the exact same thing—he just has way more resources."

"I really don’t appreciate you comparing me to a genocidal maniac," Yuki grumbled.

"Oh, really? You literally said that if a group of people came to kill you, you’d try to resolve it peacefully, but if that failed, you’d have no choice but to completely eliminate all of them because keeping them alive would be a danger to your survival."

Yuki stared down at her, completely silent. He couldn’t really argue with that logic. Instead of replying, he tilted his head back, his eyes tracking the deep shadows cast against the stone wall.

"Malakai, how long have you been standing there?"

"I arrived right around the time you started the physical removal of the Black Rot," Malakai’s smooth voice echoed from the darkness as he stepped into the light, looking thoroughly amused.

"Oh... is Vee here yet?" Yuki asked, completely unbothered by the fact that the shadow demon had watched the entire embarrassing exchange.

"Yes. She should be arriving in a few seconds."

"Great. Nyquella, we’ll finish the rest of this tomorrow, or whenever I remember," Yuki said, instantly switching back to his blissful, sunny smile.

"What?! No! Finish it now!" she shrieked.

"Oh, so now you want me to do it?" Yuki asked, thoroughly annoyed. "Malakai, hold her down and cover her mouth. I’m finishing this right now."

"Understood."

"Wait, wha—"

Before Nyquella could protest, Malakai seamlessly shaped tendrils of dark shadows, binding her limbs and covering her eyes, allowing Yuki to operate at triple the speed without her thrashing.

Upstairs, the heavy front doors creaked open. Vee and Camilla stepped into the massive estate, scanning the lavish entrance. Camilla looked around in sheer disbelief, but Vee just shook her head—she was entirely used to Yuki’s habit of going completely overboard when it came to personal comfort.

"Yuki!" Vee called out.

The very next instant, a blur of white and green zipped up the stairs. Yuki slammed directly into her, wrapping her up in a warm, fiercely tight hug.

"Did you really miss me that much?" Vee chuckled softly. She wrapped her arms around his neck, leaning in to press her forehead affectionately against his.

"You know I did," Yuki mumbled happily.

"Really?" Vee murmured, her voice dropping into a low, sultry tone. "How about you prove it to me?"

"Gladly!"

Yuki scooped her up by her waist, lifting her entirely off her feet, before joyfully hopping away down the hall and into their master bedroom.

"... Those two are seriously something else," Camilla sighed, rubbing her temples and letting out a massive, exhausted groan.

Shaking her head, she made her way down into the basement to meet the old companion Malakai had mentioned. She was driven by a mix of genuine curiosity to see who this "Nyquella the forgotten memory" was, and, perhaps more secretly, to see if this woman posed any actual competition for Malakai’s attention.

She walked past Yuki’s workshop—which he had recently converted into a massive, luxurious walk-in closet because he desperately needed more space for his hoard of handmade clothes—and entered the main lab.

In the far corner of the room, Malakai and Nyquella were conversing.

Malakai was sitting comfortably in a plush, fluffy blue armchair, wearing a smug, lazy grin. Meanwhile, Nyquella, her vibrant red-orange hair a bit disheveled, was snuggled up on the sofa, screaming at him with eyes brimming with frustrated tears.

Camilla paused, taking in the scene.

"...Wow. She is incredibly small, Camilla thought to herself, a wave of relief washing over her. Looks like I worried for absolutely nothing."
