Chapter 235 | Fuck. Off
The butler continued to hold the letter like Dexter’s opinion didn’t matter.
"If you will accept the invitation and read it, you will know every detail regarding the event. Take it."
Dexter looked at the letter then he glared at the butler.
"Like I said, I have nothing to do with the Ashford family," he said coldly.
"I and the Ashford family are done. You said so yourself."
He held the butler’s gaze.
"It’s useless. I have nothing else to do with the family. Now, if there is nothing more, take your leave."
The butler’s face changed slightly as he stared at Dexter coldly.
"You should do well to know your place. If it wasn’t absolutely important for you to attend, do you think the family would extend an invitation to a bastard they alredy cast aside? This is your opportunity and you should be groveling on the ground for this opportunity graced to you by the Ashford family."
Killing intent exploded from Dexter’s gaze and the smell of blood spread through the entire neighborhood as his Asura body activated.
Dexter’s lips slowly curled upwards as he stared at the old man before him. "Fuck, Off."
The butler’s blood ran cold as the killing intent spread through his entire body like ice pricking his entire body.
Before he could say anything, the gate instablt slammed shut!
"Bang!!!"
It closed directly in the butler’s face!
The butler stood on the other side of the gate as his heart pounded slightly with fear.
He looked at the closed gate, gritted his teeth as he halted at the gate.
Inside his compound, Dexter inhaled deeply and then breathed out as he calmed his killing intent. It eas becoming even more explosive than before.
After a while, he then walked to the house and closed the door.
When he came to the door, he saw Mira turned to look at him, then she suddenly spoke.
"The Ashford family butler," With her strength, she obviously can hear from far distances.
Dexter looked at her then nodded slowly. "Yeah."
Mira’s brows furrowed slightly in worry.
"What do they want?"
Dexter shrugged as he flexed his fingers.
"They came to drop an invitation letter. I have no idea what it’s about, and I don’t wish to know. I have nothing to do with the Ashford family. So I really don’t care."
Mira blinked as she stared ad his face closely.
Then she asked something unexpected.
"Are you okay?"
The same three words that Selene had asked the night before, when she had sensed his killing intent. But the tone was different. Selene’s version had been cautious.
Mira’s version was something else. Without pretence or sarcasm.
Dexter was taken aback.
Dexter looked at her as saw hee gaze was soft, then he smiled.
"Yeah," he said. "I’m okay."
Mira stared at his face for a long, silent moment and when she found what she was looking for, She nodded.
Then she closed her eyes as mana swirled around her body as she resumed her cultivation.
Dexter watched her for a moment and something warm settled in his chest.
He then turned toward the hallway.
Had had only taken one step, when,
"Bam. Bam. Bam!!!"
The knock hit the gate like a hammer and was even heavier than before.
Dexter stopped. His face changed and his gaze hardened.
’If they don’t leave me alone, I will teach them a lesson.’
He stormed to the front door. Yanked it open. Walked to the gate.
He grabbed the gate handle. Pulled it open.
"Did I not tell you to leave?" he growled.
The words were loud. Hard. Directed outward through the opening gate with the full force of a man who had reached the limit of his tolerance and was prepared to enforce it with whatever means were necessary.
But the words died in his throat.
Because the butler was not there.
The limousine was gone. The five suited figures were gone. The silver tray, the white gloves, the monocle, the cream-colored letter with the gold phoenix seal. All gone. The street was empty of everything except the fading smell of expensive perfume and the residual impression of a vehicle that had been parked at the curb.
The butler had left.
What stood at Dexter’s gate instead was something else entirely.
Something he had forgotten about.
Something he had, if he was being honest, completely forgotten existed.
Kreg.
The name registered before the face did.
Kreg.
The thug. The gang leader. The man who had walked into his house three weeks ago with four cronies and had demanded protection money.
"We’ll be back next month."
That had been the promise. Next month. The monthly protection fee. The Red Fang Crew’s business model. Pay us, or we find other ways to collect.
Dexter had forgotten.
He had been so consumed by the system, that he had completely and utterly forgotten about the street thug who had robbed him in his own living room.
Kreg stood at the gate.
He was tall. Muscular. Built like a door, which was the description Dexter had applied to him the first time they had met. His white beard was the same. His leather jacket was the same. His gold tooth caught the morning light and threw a small, sharp glint across the gate bars.
He was not alone.
Behind him, arranged in the loose, informal formation of men who followed a leader because the leader was bigger than them, stood four figures. Dexter recognized them. The same four from weeks ago. The same four who had fanned out across his living room, hands in pockets, grinning with the confidence of men who believed they owned whatever street they were standing on.
Kreg looked down at Dexter and smiled arrogantly.
"Oh," Kreg said, his voice deep and rough, carrying the particular, amused cadence of a man who had just been shouted at and had found it funny. "You actually dared to shout at me?"
Dexter stared at him. Kreg still had the gold tooth, the leather jacket and there were four minions behind him.
