In the original story, Kakashi had graduated early from the ninja academy at age five and quickly started running missions with his squad, leaving him with a shaky foundation.
The current Kakashi, however, had been carefully trained by the White Fang since childhood, giving him a rock-solid foundation.
After the White Fang died, Namikaze Minato took over Kakashi's training.
