Chapter 89: Midnight Ambush
The night deepened. Neon lights from the New York skyline filtered through the curtain gaps, casting fragmented shadows across the apartment floor.
The shower finally stopped running. Mira stepped out wrapped in a white bath towel. Her damp, silver-white hair rested over her shoulders, water droplets catching the warm yellow light.
She grabbed a smaller towel to dry her hair. Yawning, she padded lightly toward the bedroom.
The apartment was dead quiet. The only sounds were the faint clatter of Compiler typing in the living room and the crunch of Purifier chewing potato chips.
Mira had just whipped up a late dinner of garlic cucumber salad and tomato scrambled eggs. Both Sirens had devoured it. Purifier had nearly swallowed her own tongue and was now sprawled across the sofa, humming an off-key tune as she digested.
Mira pushed open her bedroom door. She clicked it shut, blocking out the noise.
Her room was simple. It held a large double bed, a wardrobe, and a computer desk. A familiar figure lay quietly on the far side of the soft gray sheets, facing away from the door as if already asleep.
It was Compiler.
Mira smiled and walked softly to the bedside.
Ever since Compiler arrived in this universe, she had done this almost every night. She lay quietly beside Mira, acting as a temperature-controlled body pillow.
A Siren's core body temperature naturally ran lower than a human's. It made cuddling them incredibly comfortable during the summer. Over time, Mira had developed a habit of sleeping with her arms wrapped around Compiler.
She lifted the quilt and slipped underneath. Out of habit, she stretched her arms forward, wrapping them around the figure from behind and burying her face in their neck.
The faint, familiar energy signature of a Wisdom Cube lingered in the air.
Suddenly, Mira's movements froze. Something was wrong. The physical sensation was completely off.
Compiler had a lean frame with sharp shoulder lines and a flat back. Holding her felt firm, carrying the distinct, cold texture of a machine.
The person in her arms possessed rounded shoulders, soft curves, and a slender waist. Through the thin pajamas, Mira felt the undeniable warmth of skin and the faint scent of a girl's shampoo.
Furthermore, Compiler kept her hair trimmed neatly at the shoulders. The locks brushing against Mira's cheek right now were long and smooth.
Mira's heart skipped a beat. She slowly released her grip and carefully rolled the person over.
Their eyes met.
A pair of bright, starlight-filled golden eyes stared back at her without blinking. Mischief danced in their depths. She looked entirely wide awake.
It was not Compiler. It was Purifier.
Mira froze, her mind blanking. Staring at the face inches from her own, she couldn't process the situation.
Purifier clearly had no intention of keeping up the act. Seeing Mira's stunned expression, she burst into laughter.
Before Mira could react, Purifier shot her hand out. She clamped down on the wrist still resting on her shoulder and yanked hard.
The room spun.
Mira felt an overwhelming force flip her onto her back. She hit the soft mattress with a heavy thud.
Before she could struggle, Purifier swung her leg over to straddle Mira's waist. She pinned both of Mira's wrists to the sheets above her head.
The takedown was fluid and impossibly sharp. It showcased the terrifying reaction speed of a Siren in active combat, leaving Mira zero chance to resist.
"Purifier?" Mira finally snapped out of her daze. She glared up at the girl, caught somewhere between anger and amusement. "What are you doing? Why are you in my bed? Where is Compiler?"
"Compiler is in the living room processing data. She said she needs to finish the Host Tower optimization tonight and won't be sleeping."
Purifier blinked with an innocent smile, but her iron grip on Mira's wrists didn't loosen an inch.
"I watch you sleep while holding her every day, Boss. I got jealous. I snuck in, hoping you would hold me too."
Her silver hair was gathered in a loose high ponytail. Thanks to her sudden pounce, a few stray strands slipped free, brushing against Mira's neck and causing a faint itch.
The warm bedroom light spilled over Purifier, highlighting her delicate profile. Her long eyelashes cast soft shadows over her cheeks. Her golden eyes reflected Mira's stunned expression, shining with stunning clarity.
Mira felt her cheeks heat up under the intense stare. She turned her head away and huffed.
"Stop messing around and let me go. If you want to sleep, use the guest room."
"No." Purifier shook her head. Her tone carried a playful whine, mixed with undeniable seriousness. "I don't want the guest room. I want to sleep with the Boss."
She leaned down. Her face drifted closer until her nose almost bumped Mira's.
The gap between them closed until they could feel each other's breath. The scent of strawberry shampoo mixed with the ambient energy of a Wisdom Cube. The combination flooded Mira's senses, making her heart skip a beat.
"Besides," Purifier murmured, a mysterious smile curving her lips. "Zero told me everything, Boss."
Mira went rigid. She snapped her gaze back to Purifier, realization flashing in her eyes. "Zero? What did she tell you?"
"She told me that a very interesting soul hides inside your body." Purifier met her gaze, her voice dropping into a deadly serious register. "The soul of a Commander. One who stood by us, guided all the shipgirls, and fought across countless battlefields in another world."
As expected, Mira sighed inwardly.
She always knew Observer Zero's analytical capabilities would eventually see through her origins. She just didn't expect Zero to share that intel with Purifier.
"Zero also told me not to hold back. She said I should just follow my heart."
A gentle smile graced Purifier's lips. She looked nothing like the reckless, battle-crazed maniac who only ever shouted about blowing things up.
Her voice was soft, brushing against Mira's heart like a feather. It instantly quelled the rising panic in Mira's chest.
Seeing the earnest, fiery light in Purifier's eyes, Mira fell silent. She finally offered a helpless smile, relaxing her muscles and abandoning her struggle.
"So, you snuck into my room and pinned me to the bed just to tell me that?"
"Of course not." Purifier blinked, her mischievous grin returning. She leaned even closer, their lips a hair's breadth apart. "Since it's come to this, it would be a shame not to get a proper taste of our cute Commander."
Before Mira could reply, Purifier closed the distance.
Those soft lips pressed against Mira's with delicate caution. The touch was incredibly light, like a breeze skipping across a calm lake. It carried a soft, intoxicating sweetness.
A faint strawberry aroma lingered between them, a delightful leftover from the strawberry-flavored potato chips Purifier had just devoured.
Mira's eyes went wide. Her body locked up completely, and she almost forgot how to breathe.
Purifier's technique was clearly clumsy, but it overflowed with endless tenderness. She didn't rush to deepen the kiss. She simply kept her lips pressed against Mira's, acting as careful as someone guarding the world's most precious treasure.
Then, she tentatively slipped her tongue forward, gently tracing Mira's lower lip.
An unbearable, tingling sensation sparked like an electric current through Mira's nervous system. A deep crimson blush rushed across her pale cheeks.
In that moment, Mira felt Purifier's eyelashes fluttering nervously against her skin. The fingers pinning her wrists were twitching with adrenaline.
She could even hear Purifier's heart hammering at the exact same frantic rhythm as her own.
It turned out this chaotic menace, who feared nothing and happily bombed the Sorcerer Supreme's sanctum, could still get nervous.
Mira's heart melted.
She stopped resisting and fluttered her eyes closed. Letting her body sink into the mattress, she tilted her head slightly, returning the inexperienced yet incredibly gentle kiss.
Sensing the acceptance, Purifier let out a quiet breath. Her tense posture softened. The hands trapping Mira's wrists finally released their grip, trailing slowly up to cradle Mira's face.
Emboldened, Purifier deepened the kiss. Her tongue explored further, trying to coax Mira into opening up.
Her movements remained a bit stiff and unpracticed. Yet the raw innocence and passion burned like a small flame, slowly igniting the complicated emotions buried deep inside Mira's chest.
The high ponytail swayed with Purifier's shifting weight. Stray silver locks brushed against Mira's cheeks and neck, sending fresh waves of electricity across her skin.
Their breaths tangled together in the quiet room. The warm orange light cast a provocative, intimate glow over the tangled sheets.
Mira lost track of time. Eventually, struggling for air, Purifier reluctantly pulled back. She rested her forehead against Mira's, panting softly.
Her cheeks were flushed red. Her golden eyes gleamed with a watery shine, fixing Mira with a bright, satisfied stare. She looked like a kitten that had just stolen a bowl of cream. A thin silver thread caught the ambient light before breaking.
"Boss..." she whispered. Her voice sounded hoarse and soft, completely stripping away her usual loud persona.
Mira gasped for breath, caught between annoyance and amusement. She reached up and pinched Purifier's cheek.
"You're getting too bold. Ambushes in my own bed now?"
"It's your fault for being so cute." Purifier nuzzled against Mira's palm.
She collapsed onto her side, wrapping her arms tight around Mira's waist and burying her face in Mira's neck like an overgrown puppy. "I'm sleeping with the Boss every night from now on. Compiler can't hog you anymore."
"Keep dreaming." Mira patted her back.
She didn't push the Siren away. Instead, she reached down and pulled the quilt up to cover them both. "Alright, enough messing around. Go to sleep. I have to clock in at Stark Industries tomorrow, and Tony will nag my ear off if I'm late."
"Got it." Purifier answered obediently. She squeezed Mira tighter, nuzzling contentedly against her shoulder before closing her eyes. A sweet smile lingered on her lips.
The bedroom settled into a comfortable quiet, filled only by the rhythmic sound of their breathing.
Mira looked down at the sleeping girl tucked in her arms. A gentle smile touched her eyes. She reached up, brushed a stray lock of hair from Purifier's forehead, and let out a quiet mental sigh.
Oh well. An ambush was an ambush.
She certainly didn't hate it.
Out in the living room, Compiler sat rigidly at her desk. Her fingers danced across the keyboard in a blur, sending cascades of data across her monitors.
Her advanced audio receptors twitched, capturing every single sound leaking from the bedroom. Her pale gold eyes remained entirely devoid of emotion.
A moment later, her typing ceased. She opened a new system log and began transcribing in a flat, clinical format.
Timestamp 23:17. Purifier executed a nocturnal ambush on Mira Vale. Kiss duration: one minute and twenty-seven seconds. Both subjects' emotional metrics are stable. Zero adverse reactions detected. Operation success rate: one hundred percent.
Subsequent physical intimacy between Purifier and Mira Vale will be continuously monitored. This data will serve as a foundational reference for optimizing the Siren Emotional Module.
Compiler saved the log file. Without changing her expression, she immediately resumed processing the Host Tower's architectural optimization algorithms, acting as if nothing had happened.
Outside the window, neon lights flickered against the New York skyline. The night remained gentle, and their story was only just beginning.
