Chapter 58 58: The Unworthy Thor and the God of Mischief
A dark, windy night descended upon the New Mexico desert.
Lead-gray clouds choked out the moonlight. A few scattered stars peeked through the overcast sky, barely illuminating the gravel expanse of the badlands.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. forward operating base constructed around the crater looked like a dormant steel beast. A heavy barbed-wire perimeter enclosed a three-kilometer radius. Massive searchlights swept back and forth across the desert floor. Heavily armed agents patrolled the fence line in organized shifts, and armored tactical vehicles idled at the primary checkpoint. The perimeter was airtight. Not even a fly could breach it unnoticed.
However, on a ridge just outside the perimeter, Thor Odinson crouched low behind a patch of scrub brush. His eyes were locked onto the compound. They burned with absolute determination.
Jane Foster crouched beside him. She tugged at his arm, looking completely exasperated, and whispered frantically, "Thor, please think about this! That camp is swarming with armed guards and surveillance cameras. There is no way we can sneak in! If you try, they are going to turn you into a human sieve!"
"Do not worry, Jane. Mortal weapons cannot harm me," Thor patted his chest with supreme confidence. "A Prince of Asgard will not be deterred by such a trivial obstacle. Wait for me here. I will retrieve Mjolnir and return shortly."
Before Jane could argue, Thor took off. He stayed low to the ground and sprinted down the ridge. His movements were incredibly agile—nothing like the clumsy drunk who had just been beaten up by locals an hour ago.
Jane, Dr. Selvig, and Darcy remained crouched on the hill. They watched his retreating silhouette. The three of them exchanged looks of utter despair.
"I bet five bucks he gets caught in under ten minutes," Darcy grumbled, crossing her arms.
"I'll bet ten dollars on five minutes," Selvig sighed, rubbing his forehead. "He didn't even check the patrol routes or the camera blind spots."
Unbeknownst to the trio, on a higher elevation just behind them, Mira leaned against a boulder. She held a pair of tactical binoculars to her eyes, watching the entire infiltration unfold. Compiler stood obediently at her side, synchronizing the S.H.I.E.L.D. surveillance feeds directly into her consciousness in real-time.
[Mira, I have successfully breached the S.H.I.E.L.D. perimeter security mainframe. All surveillance feeds are synchronized, and patrol routes are mapped,] Compiler reported flatly. [The target individual, Thor, has breached the outer perimeter. He will enter the visual range of camera four in exactly thirty seconds.]
"There is no rush. Help him out. Black out the cameras," Mira lowered her binoculars. A wicked smile curled her lips. "This is a classic cinematic moment. We need to ensure he reaches the hammer without interruption. If he gets arrested before the climax, the show is ruined."
[Command verified. Security mainframe hijacked. Surveillance feeds are currently looping. Infrared motion sensors disabled. Short-range patrol communications are jammed.]
Mira let out a low whistle as Compiler effortlessly dismantled S.H.I.E.L.D.'s entire multi-million-dollar security apparatus in two seconds.
Just as she suspected. In the face of Siren cyber-warfare, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s legendary "highest-level security" was as effective as wet tissue paper. It was like watching a cartoon. It looked incredibly intimidating from the outside, but anyone could just waltz right through the front door.
Down inside the base, Thor crouched behind a shipping container. He watched two armed agents patrolling the corridor ahead. He was just trying to figure out how to incapacitate them when both agents' walkie-talkies simultaneously burst into a shriek of ear-piercing static.
The two agents cursed, abandoned their route, and walked in the opposite direction to check their radios, completely clearing the path.
Thor blinked in surprise. A triumphant smirk spread across his face. As expected, he thought. Odin still favors his son. Even the winds of fortune are on my side.
He had no idea that a silver-haired teenager sitting on a hill was currently treating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s security grid like her personal playground just to ensure he got there.
For the next ten minutes, Thor was practically invincible. The surveillance cameras mysteriously panned away whenever he moved. Patrol squads perfectly missed him at every intersection. The electronic locks on the inner chain-link fence failed simultaneously. The main gate to the crater was even left slightly ajar for him.
He traversed the entire heavily fortified base without triggering a single alarm or engaging a single agent. He arrived at the crater core effortlessly.
When he looked down and saw Mjolnir resting quietly in the center of the bedrock, Thor's breath hitched. Tears welled in his eyes.
He stumbled down the muddy slope of the crater. He walked step-by-step toward the massive rock, his hands trembling as he reached out to stroke the cold, familiar metal of the hammer. The ancient Celtic knotwork seemed to sense his touch, glowing faintly in response.
"Mjolnir... my old friend," Thor choked out, his voice thick with emotion.
He whispered a prayer in Old Norse. He took a deep, steadying breath and gripped the leather-wrapped handle tightly with both hands.
He thought of the golden halls of Asgard. He thought of his father, Odin. He thought of his birthright as the God of Thunder, and the centuries he spent bringing glorious battle to the Nine Realms.
He planted his feet, threw his weight backward, and roared as he pulled with everything he had.
"Raaaggghhh!"
Every muscle in his massive frame bulged. Thick veins popped along his forehead and neck. His face turned a deep crimson. The sheer force he exerted crushed the gravel beneath his boots.
But Mjolnir did not move.
Embedded in the rock, the hammer remained entirely static. It was as if the weapon had fused with the tectonic plates of the Earth itself. It did not even wobble.
Thor's pulling motion froze.
He stared down at the hammer in absolute disbelief. He looked at his shaking hands, slowly shaking his head. "Impossible... this is impossible. Mjolnir is my weapon. It only answers to me..."
He shifted his stance. He gripped the handle again and pulled. He pulled again. And again. His desperate, agonizing roars echoed off the plastic walls of the crater perimeter. But no matter how much force he applied, the hammer remained frozen in the stone.
Once. Twice. Three times...
His eyes bloodshot and wide with panic, Thor lunged forward and grabbed the handle. He pulled upward like a madman, screaming Odin's name and reciting the ancient oaths of Asgard. He tried pulling from a standing position. He tried pulling from a crouch. Finally, he lifted his feet off the ground entirely, hanging his entire body weight from the handle and swinging back and forth like a pendulum.
The hammer remained utterly motionless.
Up on the ridge, Mira slapped a hand over her mouth. She was fighting a losing battle against hysterical laughter.
"Oh my god. The classic 'I cannot lift my own hammer' scene," Mira mentally wailed to Compiler. "I thought it was funny in the movie, but watching a grown man swing from the handle in real life is absolute comedy gold. The mighty God of Thunder, locked out by his own weapon. It has to feel as humiliating as coming home and realizing your house key doesn't work."
[Energy telemetry confirms the conceptual binding applied by Odin is still fully active,] Compiler reported flatly. [The target individual Thor's psychological state remains incompatible with the hammer's permissions.]
Down in the crater, Thor finally ran out of strength.
He let go of the handle and slumped against the bedrock. He stared blankly at Mjolnir. The burning light in his eyes faded away, replaced by an abyss of confusion and absolute despair.
He finally realized the horrific truth. His father had truly stripped him of his power. He had been completely, irreversibly reduced to a mortal.
Suddenly, a deafening klaxon alarm shrieked across the entire base.
"Alert! Alert! Unauthorized breach detected in the crater sector!"
"All tactical units converge on the target location immediately! I repeat, all units converge on the crater!"
Blinding searchlights snapped toward the center of the pit. Agent Coulson charged down the slope, flanked by over a dozen heavily armed agents. They surrounded Thor in seconds.
"Do not move! Step away from the object! Get on the ground!" the agents shouted, their assault rifles leveled at the broken man.
Thor slowly raised his head. He looked at the mortals closing in on him. A final, desperate spark of anger flared in his eyes. He suddenly stood up and charged the line, swinging his massive fists.
Even without his divine strength, his centuries of Asgardian combat experience remained. He dropped the two lead agents in seconds with brutal, efficient strikes.
But two fists could not fight a dozen men, especially when he possessed the physical durability of a slightly-above-average human.
The remaining agents swarmed him. They drew their stun batons, the tips crackling with high-voltage electricity, and jammed them brutally into Thor's ribs.
Blue electricity surged through his nervous system. Thor went completely rigid, let out a pained groan, and crashed face-first into the mud. The agents immediately piled on top of him, pinning him to the dirt and zip-tying his wrists behind his back.
"I am the Son of Odin! I am Thor, the God of Thunder! You cannot do this to me!" Thor roared, thrashing wildly against his captors.
His only reward was another brutal shock from a stun baton.
Coulson walked up to the edge of the rock. He looked down at the massive blond man pinned in the mud. He rubbed his temples.
An alien? An escaped psychiatric patient? Or a heavily armed extremist?
Coulson had a massive migraine. First the magic hammer. Then the white-haired girl with the mecha. Now a lunatic screaming that he was the God of Thunder.
"Take him away. Lock him in the temporary interrogation cell. I want two guards on the door at all times," Coulson ordered with an exhausted sigh.
Two agents dragged the limp, groaning Thor up the muddy slope toward the prefabricated containment units. The mighty God of Thunder had officially been tossed into the drunk tank by mortals.
Mira leaned against her boulder on the ridge, her shoulders shaking violently as she laughed. "Oh my god. Three days on Earth. Two stints in jail. Tased twice. Thor's mortal trial-run is locked on 'Hell Difficulty'."
[Mira. I am detecting anomalous energy fluctuations outside the western perimeter wall,] Compiler suddenly reported. A sharp, alert glint flared in her golden eyes. [It is an Asgardian energy signature. It shares the identical origin frequency as target individual Thor, but the composition relies heavily on illusionary and spatial algorithms. Based on my analysis, it is the individual 'Loki Laufeyson' you previously described.]
Mira's eyes widened. Her laughter stopped instantly.
Oh man. The real deal is here! Loki, the God of Mischief. The secondary protagonist of this entire theatrical arc!
She immediately looked toward the western perimeter. Standing in the deep shadows outside the fence was a man clad in sleek black leather, with shoulder-length black hair.
Loki was watching Thor being dragged away to the interrogation room. A malicious, deeply satisfied smirk curled his lips. His eyes danced with the sadistic pleasure of watching a tragedy unfold.
He had clearly watched the entire spectacle. He watched his arrogant older brother fail to lift the hammer, get beaten down by mortals, and get dragged away in zip-ties. He was currently preparing to infiltrate the camp, deliver a devastating psychological blow regarding Odin's 'death,' and humiliate his brother even further.
"Builder. Prepare a Mirror Sea deployment," Mira whispered. A wicked, predatory smile spread across her face. She rubbed her hands together. "It was not easy getting out here to the desert. I am absolutely not letting the God of Mischief walk away without saying hello. We are sticking to the plan. Let us show the Asgardian Second Princess—excuse me, Second Prince—what the pure, unfiltered numerical dominance of the Sirens looks like."
[Command verified. Mirror Sea initialization sequence active. Spatial anchor locked onto target Loki Laufeyson. Forced dimensional extraction underway.]
Down by the western perimeter, Loki took a step forward, preparing to cast his cloaking illusion and slip into the camp.
Suddenly, the dusty desert gravel beneath his boots transformed. The ground turned into a flawless, obsidian mirror radiating an eerie, ghostly blue light.
Loki's pupils contracted to pinpricks. His godly instincts screamed that something was catastrophically wrong. He immediately began weaving a spatial teleportation spell to evacuate.
He was too late.
An endless expanse of mirrors erupted from all directions. The physical space around him violently distorted. A terrifying, crushing spatial gravity—a force he was entirely incapable of resisting—seized his body. Before he could even shout the incantation, he was violently dragged through the mirror.
The world spun sickeningly.
The next second, the arid New Mexico desert vanished.
Loki stood upon an endless, perfectly still sea of black water.
His reflection stared back at him from the mirror-like surface of the ocean. Surrounding him, stretching into the horizon, were the ghostly phantoms of countless, gargantuan steel warships. The frigid water swelled slowly beneath his boots, radiating the suffocating, crushing hydrostatic pressure of the abyssal deep—a pressure heavy enough to swallow worlds.
This was a pocket dimension completely severed from the physical reality of Earth. There was no sky. There was no ground. There was only the black sea and the endless mirrors reflecting each other into infinity.
"Who dares?! Show yourself!" Loki commanded, his voice cold and sharp.
He was the God of Mischief. A master of magic, illusions, and spatial manipulation. Yet, standing in this dimension, he felt his magic being actively suppressed. The surrounding space was fundamentally locked down by a superior entity. He was a bird trapped in an inescapable, meticulously crafted cage.
Suddenly, the layered mirrors rippled. Two figures slowly emerged from the glass, stepping lightly onto the surface of the black water in front of him.
Two silver-haired girls.
Mira and Compiler.
Mira crossed her arms. She looked at the highly defensive Loki with a playful, dangerous smile.
"Do not be so tense, God of Mischief," Mira drawled slowly. "I have no hostile intentions. I simply noticed you were about to go psychologically torture your older brother. I thought that was a bit boring. So, I decided to invite you in for a chat."
Loki's eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. He stared fixedly at Mira, and then his gaze drifted to Compiler standing beside her.
He watched the colossal, mechanical phantom of the Siren rigging slowly unfold behind the small girl. The crushing wariness in Loki's chest deepened into genuine dread.
He had traveled the Nine Realms. He had never encountered this kind of power. He had never seen this kind of existence.
"Who are you?!" Loki demanded. His voice carried a lethal chill, and he aimed his golden scepter directly at Mira's chest. "What is this realm? Why have you abducted me?"
Mira looked at his hostile, bristling posture. She couldn't help but smile. Her bare feet glided forward two steps across the black water. Her tone was flat, yet it carried the undeniable, crushing pressure of a god.
"Who am I?"
"I am the Sovereign of the Midgardian Abyss. The master of the deep. The Banshee of steel and fire, guided by the hive-mind..."
"You may address me as the Second Observer of the Sirens... Ishar-mla Agnes."
