Chapter 103: Illusion Gu
Jiang Li arrived at Wu Jianzhang’s hospital room. The officers on guard all recognized her and didn’t think much of her visit.
"Hasn’t Wu Jianzhang woken up yet?" Jiang Li asked with a smile.
"He woke up for a bit, but then he passed out again. Miss Jiang, do you want to go in?" the officer at the door asked, looking at Jiang Li.
Jiang Li nodded, and a nearby officer pushed the door open for her.
Jiang Li stood before Wu Jianzhang’s bed. The Gu Worm inside his body seemed to sense something and began to squirm, but thankfully, it vanished again the next second.
Her gaze fell upon Wu Jianzhang’s face as she savored his expression.
"No, no..."
The moment Wu Jianzhang opened his eyes, he found himself strapped to an electric chair. A paralyzing numbness washed over him, followed by a stabbing, bone-deep pain that made his entire body tremble.
"Wu Jianzhang, does it hurt?"
Wu Jianzhang’s face contorted as he forced his eyes open. Before him stood a man who looked exactly like him, and he began to struggle in terror.
"Who... who are you?"
"I am you, Wu Jianzhang. How can you not even recognize yourself?"
"Wu Jianzhang, you’re so pathetic. Why not just cede control of your body to me?"
Wu Jianzhang’s eyes widened in terror, his heart leaping into his throat. He watched as one, two, three... twelve versions of himself appeared before him.
Soon, the small room was crammed full of versions of himself, each with a distinct personality.
"Didn’t you want to do research? What are you gaping at? Get to it..."
The next second, the scene shifted. Several doctors in white coats pinned him to a hospital bed and began relentlessly stimulating the nerves in his brain. His struggles were utterly futile.
They even forced the familiar pills into his mouth.
Wu Jianzhang tried to vomit, but in the next second, a sharp pain shot through his hand as someone forcibly snapped one of his fingers. His limbs were bound to the bed, leaving him helpless as a piglet on a chopping block.
A wave of fear washed over him. His heart hammered faster and faster. The oppressive atmosphere seemed to close in, and the feeling of suffocation made him feel like he was being driven mad.
"What are you doing? Let me go! Let me go!"
Wu Jianzhang cried out for help in terror, but the doctors and nurses in white coats beside him were like mannequins, deaf to his pleas and blind to his struggles.
He didn’t know how long he had endured such days, but he could feel his body giving out. His brain, however, screamed at him: ’Survive! Survive!’
Torn between life and death, he felt that he, too, was going insane.
Jiang Li watched the agonizing expression on Wu Jianzhang’s face. Beside her, Jiang Li, holding a rabbit, watched the scene with a smile.
"Sister, he deserves it."
Jiang Li didn’t reply, her smile only deepening.
Zhou Tiancheng had already collected the physical evidence. As for witness testimonies, they would have to wait until the patients were in better condition.
Lu Xingye glanced at a message on his phone, then looked into the hospital room. Jiang Li was just standing there; she had been for over ten minutes.
Lu Xingye went to find a doctor. They couldn’t just let Wu Jianzhang lie there unconscious indefinitely.
Hearing the door open behind her, Jiang Li watched as Lu Xingye and several doctors entered. She stepped aside, watching as the doctors wheeled Wu Jianzhang away.
Lu Xingye flashed her a smile. "Don’t worry. This time, no one can save him."
Wu Jianzhang’s sanatorium catered to the families of the rich and powerful. Now that this incident had come to light, many of them were already putting pressure on the police.
Furthermore, the families of the innocent psychiatric patients were already posting furious denunciations online, and the topic was gaining significant traction.
Wu Jianzhang had drugged the patients under the pretext of offering free treatment. The drugs contained hallucinogens that made the patients experience the terror of death. He would then claim that only his sanatorium could cure them, and after gaining their trust, he subjected them to a series of brutal procedures.
By the time these patients realized what was happening, it was too late to escape. The widespread attention the case was now receiving was undoubtedly a huge advantage.
"Yes. Thank you for all your hard work." Jiang Li smiled at Lu Xingye and sat on a chair in the corridor. She took out her phone to look at the online post he had mentioned.
It was now a top trending topic. People had already found Wu Jianzhang’s home and were pelting it with rotten eggs and garbage. A crowd had also gathered outside the hospital, determined to demand justice.
As Jiang Li scrolled through the posts, she noticed that Qiao Mei had issued a statement in her capacity as Zhou Fuhai’s ex-wife.
She claimed that Zhou Fuhai and Wu Jianzhang were colluding. She explained that when they divorced, Zhou Fuhai had refused to relinquish custody of their daughter, Zhou Xin, and had forbidden any contact between mother and child. Only now, she said, had she learned that Zhou Fuhai sent their daughter to that man-eating sanatorium.
To that end, she was donating two million to cover the patients’ treatment costs.
Shortly after, a renowned psychiatric hospital also issued a statement, announcing they were willing to take in these patients, provide them with appropriate treatment, and remain open to supervision from the public.
In the comments section, many people also offered their help.
Jiang Li sighed to herself. ’There are still good people in the world, after all.’
When Ma Shufang found Jiang Li, she rushed forward and embraced her, overcome with emotion.
"Jiang Li, thank you, thank you so much!"
She never imagined a man like Wu Jianzhang could actually be brought to justice. What’s more, Liu Meiling and Wu Jianzhang used to strut around town so arrogantly, and now crowds of people were cornering them, demanding answers.
Who would have thought that a legally invalid marriage certificate would end up saving her.
"It’s alright. If it weren’t for you, it wouldn’t have been this easy. It was you who saved yourself," Jiang Li said, looking at Ma Shufang.
If Ma Shufang hadn’t provoked Wu Jianzhang, she never would have had the chance to "dream" of him, let alone act against him.
Otherwise, she didn’t know how much longer she would have had to wait for an opening.
Ma Shufang’s eyes were red as she looked at her. "Oh, right, there’s one more thing. That son Wu Jianzhang doted on so much? He’s not even his.
Netizens dug it up. The boy is Liu Meiling’s with her ex-boyfriend."
A wave of vindication washed over Ma Shufang as she said this. Wu Jianzhang had despised her for being unable to bear children, but in the end, he was the one left without an heir. Serves him right!
"Ms. Ma, you should compile your financial records, hire a lawyer, and try to recover as much of your losses as possible."
Lu Xingye looked at Ma Shufang.
"Oh, oh, right. Okay, I’ll... I’ll go get on that then." Ma Shufang gave them both a grateful look before hurrying off.
"Jiang Li, you should go home and get some proper rest. I’ll let you know the second we have any news."
Lu Xingye thought of Jiang Li from the previous night and really wanted her to go home and rest. He was worried she’d exhaust herself to the point of making herself sick.
This business with Wu Jianzhang wouldn’t be resolved overnight; it would likely take some time.
"Okay." Jiang Li headed for the exit.
On her way back, Jiang Li bought a small cake and carried it home.
...
In a luxurious office atop a high-rise, Shi Xingchao stared at the report his subordinate had just handed him.
"Are you telling me the police are onto Wu Jianzhang now, too?"
"Boss, it’s most likely Jiang Li again. She was in Wu Jianzhang’s sanatorium three years ago. Now she’s got some power, she’s coming back for revenge.
Besides, the public outcry online is massive. We... we can’t suppress it." The subordinate finished speaking and lowered his head, not daring to look at Shi Xingchao.
"Jiang Li, Jiang Li... it’s always Jiang Li! Why won’t she just drop dead! Are you all completely useless?
This is the third time! Jiang Li has foiled my plans three times in a row! Do you all have a death wish?" Shi Xingchao glared at the man, then snatched a nearby ashtray and hurled it at him, his face a mask of fury.
’Is this Jiang Li my personal kryptonite or something? This is the third time! I managed to smooth over the first two incidents, but now that moron Wu Jianzhang has gone and messed up.’
’The park is still waiting on him, but look at him now. Not only did he fail, he’s still unconscious. By the time he wakes up, the world will have moved on without him.’
"Boss, we all thought Jiang Li was dead, so we pulled our men off her. I... we never expected..."
The subordinate trembled in fear. They never imagined that this woman, Jiang Li, could be so cunning as to fake her own death.
"Useless trash! If you don’t have a solution, then think of one! If you can’t, it just so happens the park is short-staffed. How about I send you over there to ’clear your head’?"
Shi Xingchao stubbed out his cigarette, a vicious glint in his eye. "If all else fails, just send more men. Grab her and send her over.
She might be a psycho, but her blood is warm and all her organs are intact. We’ll not only eliminate a threat, we’ll make a huge profit."
’He refused to believe that a lone orphan girl could really move heaven and earth.’
"Send someone to get Wu Jianzhang out. If you can’t... do it like we did with Cheng Jiasuo. Leave no witnesses."
"Understood."
