I Possessed The Worst Character In The Hellish Game

Chapter 31: The Other Protagonist [1]

Mikael had been thinking about something for a while now.

A quiet suspicion that had been growing in the back of his mind ever since he’d accepted the reality of his situation.

He was inside the world of Eclipsed Realms, the game he used to play in his college years.

But what did that actually mean?

In Eclipsed Realm, there were five playable protagonists.

Six, if one counted Mikael Morwell, the bonus protagonist who had been added later in the DLC.

Each protagonist had their own unique storyline, branching paths, and a cast of supporting characters and romantic interests.

The genius of the game’s design was that these stories weren’t parallel tracks running side by side.

They intersected, overlapped, and sometimes completely bypassed one another without ever touching.

If you chose to play as Aldric Vane, the other protagonists might appear as NPCs in your story.

Or they might not appear at all.

It depended on the route, the choices you made, and which quests you pursued or the quests you ignored.

If you played as Princess Elara Von Valerion, the storyline was completely different from Aldric’s.

There would be different antagonists, different stakes, different endings.

And Aldric might not even exist in that version of the world.

The game’s lore explained this as a quirk of fate.

Different timelines and different possibilities unfolding based on whose perspective the story follows.

But Mikael wasn’t thinking about lore anymore. He was thinking about practical implications.

He had woken up in the body of Mikael Morwell.

That suggested he was living Mikael’s route.

His storyline.

His route.

But what if he was wrong?

What if Mikael’s story wasn’t the main one being told in this timeline?

What if he were just an NPC in someone else’s playthrough?

The thought was unsettling.

It meant he didn’t have control over the narrative the way he’d assumed.

But.

It also offered a strange kind of hope.

If he weren’t the protagonist, then the other playable characters would be out there somewhere.

And if they were out there, maybe... they were also like him.

People from the Earth.

Transmigrators.

People who had played the game..... who might understand what he was going through.

Or they could be exactly what they appeared to be.

Native inhabitants of this world who had no idea they were characters in a game that had been played by millions of people on another plane of existence.

He needed to find out.

And that was exactly what he was doing right now.

Across the ballroom, a handsome young man with short red hair was holding court near the refreshment table.

He wore a confident smile as his vivid purple eyes seemed to sparkle with some private amusement.

He was surrounded by a small flock of young noblewomen, all of whom were laughing at something he’d just said.

His posture was relaxed and open, one hand resting casually in his pocket while the other gestured animatedly.

He was Silas Islington.

One of the six playable protagonists of Eclipsed Realms.

Mikael had recognized him immediately.

The red hair with purple eyes and the way he carried himself -- it was exactly what the game had rendered him.

Silas’s character was built around a specific archetype of a charming playboy.

The flirt with a heart of gold buried somewhere deep beneath layers of wit and innuendo.

In the game, his storyline had focused on his growth from a carefree womanizer to someone capable of genuine emotional connection.

From what Mikael could observe, the Silas in front of him was playing his part perfectly.

He leaned in close to whisper something to a young lady in a pink gown, who promptly turned the color of her dress and hid her face behind her fan.

Another woman tapped his arm with mock indignation as she demanded equal attention from him.

Silas laughed and spread his hands in a gesture of helpless surrender, promising her that she would always have first place in his heart.

It was smooth and exactly what Mikael would have expected from his character.

But was it a performance by a native Silas of this world, or a performance by someone from Earth pretending to be Silas?

Only one way to find out.

Mikael adjusted the cuffs of his gloves and began walking toward the group.

He moved with the same calm, unhurried stride.

A few heads turned as he passed.

The whispers hadn’t entirely died down from his entrance, and he could still feel occasional glances brushing against him like moths drawn to a flame.

As he approached the cluster around Silas.

One of the young ladies noticed him first, her eyes widening slightly as her fan stopped mid-flutter.

"Lord Mikael."

She said as other women turned in unison.

Mikael offered them a small, polite smile, the best he could muster to acknowledge someone’s existence without promising anything more.

"Ladies, I hope I’m not interrupting."

"Not at all."

The one in the pink gown quickly recovered her composure before saying--

"We were just enjoying Lord Islington’s company. He was telling us about his travels."

"Fascinating, I’m sure." Mikael’s gaze shifted to Silas. "I was hoping I might borrow him for a moment. There’s something I’d like to discuss. Hope you ladies don’t mind much."

The women exchanged glances.

Mikael could see some calculations happening behind their eyes--

But whatever conclusions they reached, they seemed to decide that a Morwell’s request wasn’t something to be refused.

"Of course." The woman in the pink said. "We wouldn’t dream of keeping you."

"We’ll find you later, Silas."

Another woman said, touching Silas’s arm briefly before retreating with the others into the crowd.

Silas watched them go with an exaggerated expression of mourning on his face.

"And just like that, my audience abandons me. You must teach me that trick sometime."

He turned to Mikael as his purple eyes glittered with genuine curiosity.

"Mikael Morwell, isn’t it? I’ve heard the name, but I don’t believe we’ve ever met. I’m Silas Islington. Son of a minor baron, professional disappointment to my family, and occasional charmer of beautiful women. Though apparently not as charming as you, given how quickly they scattered."

He said it with a self-deprecating grin that put people at ease.

It was the kind of disarming honesty that made it hard to dislike him, even when he was being glib.

"Mikael Morwell." Mikael confirmed. "I haven’t been to many of these events. I thought it was time to change that."

"Bold choice, starting with a royal banquet. Most people ease into society. A small dinner party here, a garden gathering there." Silas picked up a glass of wine from a passing tray and took a sip. "But I respect the ambition. And I have to say, you’ve certainly made an impression. Half the room is still talking about your entrance."

"And half the room was talking about you."

Mikael said jokingly.

"Half the room talks about me everywhere I go. It’s like my second curse." Silas’s grin widened. "A very flattering curse that I have absolutely no intention of breaking."

Mikael found himself almost smiling.

Silas had a way of making conversation feel like a game, and it was hard not to play along.

But he hadn’t approached Silas just to trade quips.
