The Final Draw- Black Arcana
The examiner cleared his throat. "Young Lord Lucien," he said, voice clipped now that the announcement had been made. "Please remain calm. The awakening is complete."
Remain calm.
Lucien almost laughed.
A sharp sound did escape him, half breath, half broken amusement. It came out wrong, too old for his face, too bitter for an eighteen-year-old standing beneath stained glass in ceremonial white. Several nobles frowned. Gareth's smirk widened. Cedric leaned closer to him and murmured something Lucien could not hear, though he knew the shape of it. He had heard variations of that whisper for years.
Fortune's Beggar.
Useless.
F-rank.
Lucien should have flinched. The younger him had. He remembered it vividly. He remembered the heat in his face, the shame crawling under his collar, the desperate need to say something witty before someone else could define him. He remembered smiling too wide, bowing too carelessly, making himself into the fool they expected because being laughed at by choice hurt less than being pitied by accident.
But the man inside him had already died once beneath stolen banners.
Humiliation felt small compared to rope.
Then the air before his eyes fractured.
Lucien froze.
A faint blue light appeared in front of him, thin at first, like a reflection on glass. It spread into a rectangular pane of luminous script hovering between him and the examiner's chest. The edges shimmered as though cut from cold flame. Letters formed one after another, clean, precise, and impossible.
[You have achieved the Final Draw.]
Lucien's breath caught.
The hall continued moving around him. Nobles whispered. Silk rustled. Someone coughed into a gloved hand. The examiner released Lucien's wrist, mistaking his stiffness for shock at the F-rank judgment. No one screamed. No one pointed. No one reacted to the blue window hanging in the middle of the dais.
Only Lucien saw it.
More words appeared.

[Your Tarot Draw has evolved.]

[Tarot Draw has become Black Arcana.]
Lucien stared so hard his eyes began to sting.
In his first life, he had spent years clawing at scraps of understanding. He had slept in old libraries until priests chased him out. He had paid fake mystics, threatened drunken fortune-tellers, bribed retired adventurers, robbed a dead hedge-witch of her journals, and bled through more mistakes than he cared to remember. The cards never explained themselves. They appeared when they wished, vanished when they wished, mocked him when he begged, saved him when he had already given up, and never once deigned to tell him what they were.
Now a blue thing hovered in front of his face and calmly explained the mystery of his life as if reading from a ledger.
His mouth went dry again.
[Each Card you Draw will now have three options.]
[Base Option: Omen.]
[New Option: Manifestation.]
[New Option: Vestment.]
[All options have two different activations when drawn.]
[Upside Draw.]
[Downside Draw.]
Lucien's thoughts stumbled over themselves. Omen he understood. Omen was what he had lived with. Vague pictures, mocking symbols, warnings wrapped in riddles. Manifestation, perhaps, explained what Band of Swords and The Knight had done in his first life, when the cards had briefly become more than pictures and fear. But Vestment? The word sat in his mind like a key placed into a lock he had not yet found. To wear the card? To become what the card represented? To drag the omen into his own flesh?
The idea should have frightened him.
Instead, something cold and hungry inside him leaned closer.
The blue light continued.
[You currently have 1 Black Arcana Card.]
[Prey Before the Trap has been transformed into its Black Arcana Version.]
[Card Obtained: Carrion Before the Snare.]
The pale card above his palm changed.
It did not flip. It did not burn. It rotted.
Color drained from the painted lamb first, white fleece turning gray, then bone-pale, then mottled with the deep bruising of something long dead but still standing. The grass beneath it withered into black reeds. The hidden metal jaws became something worse: not a hunter's trap, but a ribcage half-buried in grave soil, its bones bent open like teeth. The lamb's eyes, once simple and frightened, darkened into two hollow pits lit by faint violet sparks. Around its neck hung a little bell made from a finger bone.
The name below it rewrote itself in silver-black letters.
Carrion Before the Snare.
Lucien's fingers twitched.
The card felt heavier now. Not physically, perhaps, but in meaning. The old card had warned prey of danger. This new one felt as though it warned carrion that the hunter was already circling, that the trap was not merely ahead but beneath the skin of the world. It was still his first card, still the lamb before the hidden jaws, but death had crawled into its painted heart and made a throne there.
[You are limited to drawing 1 card per day.]
Lucien almost cursed aloud.
One card per day. Even now, after death, fate remained stingy.
Before he could decide whether to laugh or break something, the next pane of text appeared.
[You gained a new Card that can always be drawn whenever you wish.]
[Card Obtained: Inspector.]
A second card appeared beside the first, smaller and stranger. It was not black like Carrion Before the Snare, nor pale like the old Tarot cards. It looked blue-white, translucent, almost glasslike. On its face was an eye set inside a magnifying lens, but the hand holding the lens was skeletal, the bones thin and inked with tiny script. The pupil of the eye moved once, focusing on Lucien.
He did not like that.
Not because it looked dangerous, but because it looked aware.
