Chapter 85 - 40: Bride Price and Dowry (Part 2)

"Xiao Jiang, you’re..." He was about to ask what she did for a living to be so rich.

But before Shen Yugang could finish, Jiang Manshu grabbed his arm and shot him a look, silently warning him, "Don’t ask what you shouldn’t."

Receiving Jiang Manshu’s signal, Shen Yugang abruptly changed the subject. "When are your parents arriving?"

Jiang Li shook her head. "I’m not sure yet. They hadn’t left home when I called earlier."

Jiang Manshu didn’t press, just nodding and suggesting, "They’ll probably be a while then. Why don’t we play a little game while we wait?"

Zhou Jiawen suddenly piped up, "Sister-in-law, do you have an automatic mahjong table at home?"

"We do."

Not just one, but two. They were set up specifically for when both families came over so they could play mahjong to pass the time.

Zhou Jiawen immediately linked her arm with Jiang Li’s. "Then what are we waiting for? Let’s play mahjong!"

Jiang Li rubbed the tip of her nose. "Why don’t you guys play? I need to go pick up my parents later."

Shen Yuchu explained with a wry smile, "Dad won’t play with us younger folks. If you don’t join, Sister-in-law, we won’t have enough people for a full table."

Shen Yugang sighed and rested his forehead in his hand. "That’s because you play too slowly."

Shen Yuchu played even slower than a grandma.

In the time it took them to barely finish one round, other people could have played several.

Shen Yuchu pouted and grumbled, "That’s only because I don’t play often. Not like you guys, who play every day."

Zhou Jiawen shook Jiang Li’s arm. "Come on, Sister-in-law! When Uncle and Auntie get here, we can have Big Brother go pick them up. It’s a perfect chance for him to score some points with his in-laws."

Jiang Manshu shot Zhou Jiawen a look. "Xiao Wen."

If it were any other matter, she might have chimed in with some persuasion.

But since this involved Jiang Li’s parents, the decision had to be Jiang Li’s alone.

Jiang Li bit her lip, hesitating for a moment before letting out a silent sigh. "Alright, let’s go. I’ll play with you."

’Just as Zhou Jiawen said,’ she thought, ’I can have Shen Yanzhi pick up Mom and Dad later. It’ll be a good way for him to make his presence known. Not that they aren’t already quite satisfied with him as a son-in-law, of course.’

The group went upstairs together. Two automatic mahjong tables were set up in a dedicated game room, each with its own massage chair. It was the ultimate luxury—being able to play and get a massage at the same time.

Zhou Jiawen sat down to try one out and gave Jiang Li a thumbs-up. "Sister-in-law, you really know how to live."

Jiang Li grinned. "If you guys like them, I can get them for you, too."

’After all, massage chairs don’t cost that much.’

Zhou Jiawen was pleasantly surprised. "I was just saying."

’But if Jiang Li is really offering to buy me one, I’ll absolutely take it. For someone who can buy a villa worth hundreds of millions on a whim, what’s a massage chair that costs a few thousand, or even ten thousand?’

Shen Yuchu stared at Zhou Jiawen in a daze. "Wait, you’re just going to sit down like that, all bright-eyed and ready to go?"

Zhou Jiawen raised an eyebrow. "It’s fine. You can watch me play. It’ll be just like you’re playing yourself."

Shen Yugang very consciously gave his seat to Jiang Manshu, opting to sit on the sidelines as a spectator.

Besides the individual massage chairs, the adjacent rest area had a sofa bed, a snack cabinet, and a heated cabinet for drinks.

Jiang Li asked, "Would you guys like drinks or tea?"

Zhou Jiawen and Shen Yuchu said in unison, "Drinks, please."

Jiang Manshu looked at Shen Yugang. "Then let’s have drinks, too." Shen Yugang nodded in agreement. "Sounds good."

Jiang Li got up and took out six bottled drinks from the cabinets. "See if you like these. If not, I can have the housekeeper bring up something else."

Shen Yugang chuckled. "We’re not that picky."

After handing out the drinks to everyone, she found a moment to send a message to Xie Wan, asking her to tell Shen Yanzhi to go out and pick up her parents later.

’The main reason is that Shen Yanzhi is busy cooking in the kitchen, so he definitely won’t see a message. Besides, with Jiang Manshu and the others right here, it would be awkward to call him.’

About an hour later, there was suddenly a noise at the door.

Jiang Li turned her head and saw Xie Wan leading Jing Shiyun and Jiang Bowen inside.

Jiang Li stood up. "Dad, Mom."

Jiang Manshu and Shen Yugang said in unison, "Welcome!"

Zhou Jiawen and Shen Yuchu said together, "Uncle, Auntie."

Jiang Bowen cupped his fists. "Apologies, apologies. We’re late."

Shen Yugang pulled a cigarette pack from his pocket and offered one over. "Not at all, not at all. You’re right on time."

Jiang Bowen waved his hand. "I’m a bit under the weather, so I’ll pass."

Jiang Li frowned instinctively. "How did you catch a cold out of the blue?"

She then reached out to feel Jiang Bowen’s forehead. "Have you taken any medicine?"

Jiang Bowen smiled and replied, "I probably just caught a chill. I took some medicine before coming over."

’No wonder they say a daughter is a parent’s little warm coat,’ he thought. ’Would a son be this thoughtful?’
