Investing in My Yandare Villainess Fiancée:Each Reward Fuels My Growth

Chapter 124: Investment 124—What Ren Revealed

Ren’s interrogation began the following morning, once Edith had confirmed his condition stable enough to withstand questioning, conducted in a secure chamber within the academy’s administrative wing under the careful, watchful presence of the headmaster, Jin, and, at Elliot’s own insistence, himself and Seria both.

"I want to be clear," Ren said, seated across the plain wooden table, wrists bound in the same enchanted restraints that had once held Liam, "that my cooperation extends only so far as it doesn’t actively endanger my own life further than it already has."

"Understood," the headmaster said evenly. "We’re not asking you to sacrifice yourself for our benefit. Simply to share what you know."

Ren studied the assembled group for a long, considering moment before finally, with visible reluctance, beginning to speak.

"The Architect operates through a hierarchy considerably more complex than you’ve likely assumed," he said. "Lieutenants like myself, coordinating regional operations. Above us, a smaller circle of considerably more powerful operatives, directly overseeing the primary strategic objectives. Alex sits among that circle, though his position remains somewhat unusual compared to the rest of us."

"Unusual how?" Jin pressed.

"The others serve out of ambition, fear, or genuine ideological alignment with the Architect’s ultimate goals," Ren said. "Alex serves for none of those reasons, as far as I’ve ever been able to determine. He serves because the Architect holds something he desperately wants returned to him."

"His sister," Elliot said quietly.

Ren’s eyebrows rose slightly. "You’ve already learned that much, apparently."

"We suspected," Jin clarified. "Confirm it for us properly."

"Lyanna Aldric," Ren said. "Alex’s younger sister, taken as leverage nearly two years ago, shortly after Alex’s own disgrace and disappearance from public record. The Architect holds her in a location I don’t have direct knowledge of, using her continued safety as the primary lever ensuring Alex’s ongoing, considerably reluctant service."

"So Alex isn’t loyal to the Architect’s cause at all," Seria said slowly. "He’s trapped, the same way Corwin was."

"More thoroughly trapped, I’d wager," Ren said. "Corwin’s daughter was leverage over a period of months. Lyanna’s been held for nearly two years. Whatever loyalty or resignation Alex has developed toward his circumstances, I imagine it’s considerably more entrenched than Corwin’s ever was."

Elliot absorbed this, the pieces of Alex’s cryptic letters finally settling into clearer, more sympathetic focus. "If we could find her. Rescue her, the way we rescued Wren and the others—"

"You’d potentially break the single strongest lever the Architect holds over one of his own inner circle," the headmaster finished, something calculating entering his weathered expression. "That’s not merely a rescue operation, Elliot. That’s a potential strategic opportunity."

"Assuming Alex would actually turn against the Architect once she’s safe," Cassandra said, having joined partway through the interrogation, expression skeptical. "Two years of forced service doesn’t necessarily guarantee gratitude or loyalty in return. He might simply vanish with his sister and want nothing further to do with any side of this conflict."

"Possibly," Elliot admitted. "But it’s still the right thing to do, regardless of whether it produces a strategic advantage. She’s innocent in all of this, same as Corwin’s daughter was."

Ren studied Elliot for a long, genuinely curious moment. "You continue to surprise me, Reingard. Most people in your position would view this purely through the lens of tactical advantage."

"Most people haven’t spent the past year watching what happens when people are used as leverage against the ones who love them," Elliot said quietly, thinking of his own family’s siege, of Wren’s captivity, of Corwin’s desperate, coerced cooperation.

"Do you know where she’s being held?" the headmaster asked Ren directly.

"Not precisely," Ren admitted. "But I know enough about the Architect’s general holding patterns to narrow the possibilities considerably. There are perhaps three or four locations consistent with what little information I’ve gathered over my years of service."

"Then that’s our next lead," Jin said, already turning the possibilities over with sharp, focused calculation. "We investigate each location carefully, the same methodical approach that led us to the compound we already liberated."

The headmaster considered the plan carefully, weighing the operation’s potential strategic value against its inherent risks. "Agreed. Though I want this pursued with even greater caution than our previous reconnaissance, given how directly it might affect Alex’s own loyalties and the Architect’s broader strategic calculations."

As the interrogation concluded and Ren was escorted back to his secure holding quarters, Elliot lingered a moment longer, turning the revelation over with fresh, cautious hope.

"If we can free her," he said to Seria, "maybe we don’t have to keep fighting Alex as an enemy at all."

"Maybe," Seria said, though her tone carried careful, measured caution rather than full optimism. "But be careful how much hope you place in that possibility, Elliot. Alex has already proven himself capable of considerable manipulation and cruelty, regardless of whatever sympathetic circumstances might be driving his current choices."

"I know," Elliot said. "I’m not planning on trusting him blindly. But I think this is worth pursuing regardless, both for Lyanna’s sake and for whatever advantage it might eventually offer against the Architect himself."

Seria studied him for a long moment, something warm and quietly proud settling into her expression despite her earlier caution.

"That compassion is one of the things I love most about you," she said finally. "Even when it occasionally worries me."

Elliot managed a tired, grateful smile, drawing quiet strength from her steady, honest support as the new lead settled into place—one more thread in the increasingly complex tapestry of alliances, sacrifices, and hard-won hope that had come to define this entire, exhausting war.

That evening, the wider group gathered to discuss the day’s revelations, the mood carrying a cautious, complicated mixture of hope and lingering wariness.

"So Alex isn’t actually evil," Deria said slowly, working through the implications. "He’s just... trapped. Same as everyone else the Architect’s used against us."

"I wouldn’t go quite that far," Kael cautioned. "Whatever sympathetic circumstances are driving his choices, he still orchestrated Liam’s manipulation with considerable skill and cruelty. Trapped or not, he’s made choices along the way that caused genuine harm."

"That’s fair," Elliot admitted. "I’m not suggesting we simply forgive everything he’s done. But understanding why he’s done it might help us find a path forward that doesn’t end with more unnecessary bloodshed."

"A noble goal," Rose observed, stirring her tea with characteristic thoughtfulness. "Though I’d caution against assuming his sister’s rescue will automatically produce the outcome you’re hoping for. Two years is a long time to be shaped by fear and coercion."

"I know," Elliot said. "But it’s still worth trying. Even if it doesn’t work out the way I’m hoping."

Jin, who had remained largely quiet throughout the discussion, finally spoke up, his expression thoughtful. "I’ll begin narrowing down the possible holding locations Ren mentioned, starting tomorrow. If we’re going to pursue this, I’d rather move quickly, before the Architect has time to relocate her in response to today’s setback."

"Agreed," Cassandra said. "Though I want proper reconnaissance this time, not another mission that ends with half our team nearly caught in an ambush."

"We’ll be careful," Elliot promised. "This time, more than ever."

As the meeting drew to a close and the group began dispersing toward much-needed rest, Elliot found himself lingering a while longer, turning over everything he’d learned about Alex, about Lyanna, about the tangled, complicated web of coercion and manipulation the Architect had woven across so many lives.

Whatever came next, he suspected, this new thread would prove just as significant to the war’s ultimate outcome as any battle fought with sword or spell.
