Chapter 106: Investment 106: The Alarm
They nearly made it out clean.
The ascent back through the ventilation shaft proved considerably more difficult than the descent had been, muscles already strained from hours of careful, tension-filled movement, but they emerged one by one into the predawn darkness of the compound’s northeastern corner without incident, the earlier guard rotation pattern holding steady exactly as Cassandra had predicted.
It was the compound’s main structure, not the underground chamber, that finally betrayed them.
"Movement," Jin whispered urgently, freezing mid-step as a door within the main building swung open, spilling harsh torchlight across the courtyard. "Get down."
They dropped into the shadows along the perimeter wall, watching as a figure emerged from the compound’s central structure—not a guard, but someone considerably more familiar, cloaked in the same dark robes Elliot had come to associate with the Architect’s inner circle.
"Ren Solmere," Kael breathed, barely audible.
Ren paused at the courtyard’s center, head tilting slightly as though listening for something just beyond the range of ordinary hearing, and Elliot’s stomach dropped as he watched the lieutenant’s expression shift from idle patrol to sharp, sudden alertness.
"We’re here," Ren said aloud, voice carrying easily across the quiet courtyard. "Aren’t we."
Nobody answered, the entire group holding perfectly still, but Ren’s gaze swept methodically across the shadowed perimeter with unnerving, deliberate precision, as though he could sense their presence through means considerably more reliable than simple sight.
"Come now," Ren continued, a thin smile creeping across his features. "I know precision work when I see it. Sixteen guards, careful rotation timing, a clean infiltration route through the ventilation system—that’s not amateur reconnaissance. That’s trained, deliberate intrusion."
"He’s baiting us," Cassandra murmured, barely moving her lips. "Trying to provoke a reaction that reveals our position."
"It’s working," Jin admitted grimly.
Ren’s smile widened further as the silence stretched on, unbroken. "Very well. If you won’t reveal yourselves willingly, I suppose I’ll simply have to encourage the process."
He raised a hand, and dark energy began pulsing outward from his palm in a slow, expanding pulse—not an attack, Elliot realized with dawning horror, but a detection spell, designed to sweep the entire compound’s perimeter and expose anything attempting to remain hidden.
"Move, now!" Jin hissed, and the group broke from cover simultaneously, sprinting for the perimeter wall’s nearest breach point as alarm bells began ringing out across the compound, guards pouring from every visible structure in immediate, coordinated response.
"So there you are," Ren called out, voice carrying clear, delighted satisfaction across the chaos. "Elliot Reingard. Kael Vantressor. How exceptionally generous of you both to deliver yourselves directly to my doorstep."
"We need to reach the treeline," Cassandra shouted, already engaging the nearest cluster of guards with brutal, efficient precision, storm-mana crackling violently around her blade. "Cover our retreat!"
Seria’s ice erupted across the courtyard floor, sending a wave of pursuing guards sprawling as they lost their footing entirely, while Kael’s precise, economical strikes cleared a path directly toward the perimeter breach.
Elliot’s ward flared instinctively as a guard’s spell arced toward him, deflecting the strike even as he pressed forward alongside the others, adrenaline and dread tangling together in his chest.
Ren didn’t pursue directly, instead remaining at the courtyard’s center, watching the chaos unfold with unsettling, calm detachment.
"Run, if you must," he called out, voice carrying easily over the din of battle. "But know that the Architect now has confirmation of exactly how far you’re willing to go to interfere with his operations. That knowledge alone was worth the cost of this compound’s exposure."
They reached the perimeter wall’s breach point moments later, Jin’s illusion magic weaving a final, desperate veil of misdirection around the group as they scrambled through and sprinted for the treeline beyond, guards’ shouts and the distant, echoing sound of pursuit fading gradually behind them.
They didn’t stop running until the compound had disappeared entirely from view, finally collapsing into a exhausted, breathless huddle deep within the surrounding forest.
"Everyone accounted for?" Cassandra demanded, quickly scanning the group for injuries.
"Bruised, exhausted, but alive," Kael confirmed, checking his own wounds with a wince.
"We were compromised," Jin said grimly, once he’d caught his breath sufficiently to speak. "Ren clearly anticipated exactly this kind of reconnaissance attempt."
"Which means he’s known we were coming for some time," Seria said, dread evident in her voice. "Possibly since before we ever left the academy."
Elliot’s blood ran cold at the implication. "There’s another infiltrator. At Adonite."
The group fell into heavy, unsettled silence, the weight of that realization settling over all of them as the forest’s predawn quiet finally began giving way to the first grey light of morning.
"We need to get back," Cassandra said finally, voice tight with grim resolve. "Immediately. The headmaster needs this intelligence, and Adonite needs a considerably more thorough security sweep than the one we’ve already conducted."
They gathered their scattered supplies and pressed onward through the forest, the mission’s original mandate of careful, distant observation having transformed, in the span of a single harrowing night, into confirmation of an enemy considerably more deeply entrenched, and considerably more dangerous, than any of them had previously understood.
Elliot rode in tense, exhausted silence for much of the journey back, the image of that young woman’s hollow, defeated eyes refusing to leave his thoughts no matter how hard he tried to focus on the road ahead.
"You’re thinking about the prisoners," Seria said quietly, guiding her horse alongside his.
"I promised her we’d come back," he said. "I don’t even know her name, and I made her a promise I’m not certain I can actually keep."
"You will keep it," Seria said, with the same unshakeable certainty she carried into every fight. "We all will. Cassandra’s right that we couldn’t have safely freed them tonight, not with only five of us against an entire fortified compound. But we know where they are now. We know what’s happening. That’s considerably more than we had before tonight, and it’s more than enough to build a proper rescue around."
Elliot considered that, some of the guilt in his chest easing, though not fully. "I hope you’re right."
"I usually am," Seria said, a faint, tired smile finally breaking through her own exhaustion, and despite everything, Elliot found himself managing a small answering smile of his own.
They rode on through the gradually brightening morning, the academy’s distant towers finally coming into view on the horizon, carrying with them intelligence that would soon set in motion considerably more than any of them yet fully understood.
