Investing in My Yandare Villainess Fiancée:Each Reward Fuels My Growth

Chapter 101: Investment 101: The Groundskeeper’s Secret

Jin found them the following evening, expression carefully neutral in the particular way Elliot had learned meant he was suppressing something significant.

"I’ve confirmed it," he said quietly, drawing Elliot, Seria, and Kael aside from the crowded dining hall into a quieter side corridor. "The groundskeeper. Real name unknown, employment records entirely fabricated. I’ve been watching him for the better part of two days."

"And?" Elliot pressed.

"He’s meeting someone tonight," Jin said. "Beyond the academy’s eastern boundary, just past the wardline. I intend to observe the meeting directly, but I’d rather not go in entirely alone, given what we’re potentially dealing with."

"We’re coming," Seria said immediately.

"I assumed as much," Jin said, something almost fond beneath his usual dry delivery. "Kael, you as well?"

"Obviously," Kael said.

They gathered as dusk settled over the academy grounds, moving with careful, practiced stealth toward the eastern boundary where Adonite’s protective wardwork gave way to open, unremarkable countryside. Jin led them to a concealed vantage point overlooking a small clearing just beyond the wardline, where, precisely as promised, the groundskeeper stood waiting.

He didn’t wait long. A second figure emerged from the tree line moments later—cloaked, unmistakably familiar in bearing, though not the same messenger from either the estate siege or the wilderness preserve encounter.

"Report," the cloaked figure said, voice carrying faintly across the clearing.

"They’ve locked down the academy," the groundskeeper said, voice tight with barely concealed nervousness. "Full wardwork activation. I can’t get near the primary targets without raising alarm now."

"Unacceptable," the cloaked figure said. "The Architect requires updated movement patterns for both hosts. Immediately."

"I’m telling you, it’s not possible anymore. The headmaster’s tightened everything since the preserve incident."

"Then perhaps," the figure said, voice dropping into something considerably colder, "you’ve outlived your usefulness entirely."

The groundskeeper’s eyes widened with sudden, genuine fear, but before he could react, dark energy lashed out from the cloaked figure’s outstretched hand, and his body collapsed lifeless to the clearing floor.

Elliot’s breath caught, horror and cold fury tangling together in his chest.

"They just—" Seria’s whisper carried barely restrained rage.

"Quiet," Jin murmured, though his own expression had hardened considerably.

The cloaked figure studied the fallen groundskeeper’s body for a long, unbothered moment before turning, almost casually, toward the exact spot where the four of them crouched hidden in the underbrush.

"You may as well come out," the figure said. "I’ve known you were watching since before I even arrived."

Jin cursed under his breath, rising slowly, the others following his lead with weapons and mana ready.

"Impressive," Kael said carefully, studying the figure with wary calculation. "Most people don’t notice an Imperial’s presence unless he wants them to."

"I’m not most people," the figure said. "Ren Solmere, third of the Architect’s direct lieutenants. A pleasure, truly, to finally meet the two hosts causing my employer such considerable inconvenience."

"You just killed your own operative," Elliot said, fury bleeding into his voice. "Without hesitation."

"He’d become a liability," Ren said simply, as though the observation required no further justification. "The Architect has little patience for liabilities."

"Then he’ll have considerably less patience for what happens next," Seria said, frost already spreading rapidly across the clearing floor.

Ren’s expression carried no visible concern despite the mounting threat. "I’m not here to fight all four of you simultaneously. That would be, frankly, poor strategy on my part. I came merely to confirm what my organization already suspected—that Adonite’s increased security has genuinely disrupted our surveillance capabilities."

"Then you’ve learned exactly nothing you didn’t already know," Jin said, green mana beginning to gather ominously around his fingertips. "Which means you’re leaving here with nothing but confirmation that you’re considerably outmatched."

Ren studied Jin with renewed, careful assessment, clearly recalculating the odds of the current confrontation. "An Imperial," he said slowly. "Interesting. The Architect will find that detail considerably relevant."

Dark mist began gathering around his form, the same telltale sign of imminent retreat Elliot had already come to recognize all too well.

"Until we meet again," Ren said. "Which, given how rapidly circumstances are escalating, I suspect will be considerably sooner than any of you would prefer."

He vanished into shadow, leaving behind only the groundskeeper’s fallen body and the clearing’s unsettling, lingering silence.

"He’s gone," Kael said grimly, lowering his blade.

Jin crouched beside the fallen groundskeeper, checking for any lingering sign of life, though his expression made clear he already expected none.

"Dead," he confirmed quietly. "Silenced before he could reveal anything useful."

"They killed their own person," Seria said, voice tight with barely contained fury, "just to keep us from learning anything."

"Which tells us something important in itself," Jin said, rising slowly. "The Architect’s organization treats its own operatives as entirely expendable. That’s useful information, even if it came at considerable cost."

As they made their way back toward the academy’s wardline, the weight of what they’d just witnessed settled heavily over all of them—a stark, brutal reminder of exactly what kind of enemy they were truly facing.

"We need to tell the headmaster immediately," Elliot said finally. "Everything."

"Agreed," Jin said. "And Elliot—Ren mentioned recalculating strategy after learning I was here. I don’t think that’s a good sign. Whatever the Architect’s planning next, I suspect he’s about to escalate considerably faster than any of us were prepared for."

Seria’s hand found Elliot’s as they crossed back through the shimmering boundary of the academy’s wardline, her grip tighter than usual, the earlier fury in her expression settling into something colder, more resolute.

"Then we escalate our own preparations to match," she said. "Whatever timeline the Architect thinks he’s forcing on us, I refuse to let it catch us unprepared the way the siege nearly did."

"Agreed," Kael said, falling into step beside them, his own expression carrying the same hardened resolve. "Ren called us hosts, not students, not people. That tells me everything I need to know about how little regard this organization actually holds for anyone standing in their way, expendable operatives included."

Jin remained quiet for the rest of the walk back toward the main academy buildings, clearly turning the encounter over with the same careful, calculating focus Elliot had come to associate with his rare moments of genuine seriousness.

"I’ll wake the headmaster," he said finally, as they reached the courtyard. "This can’t wait until morning."
